The Springfield Demize host the defending PDL champion Thunder Bay Chill on Tuesday night with a start time of 7:30 pm. It will be the only game these two teams play against each other this season.
The Thunder Bay Chill suffered a 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Lions Sunday night in the first game of a four game road trip. Steven Beattie got the goal late in the game, a 25 yard rocket (the same guy who got the only goal in the last Demize home game).
The Demize have made some recent roster adjustments due to injuries. Andrew Bordellon (Drury University), Stuart Stapleton (Belmont University), and Ryan Trudgian (OCU) have seen their PDL season come to an early end. Roster additions include 3 members from the 2008 squad, including defender Daniel Knop (Memphis University), midfielder Patrick Gritz (W. Illinois) and defender/forward Eishun ’Ace’ Yoshida (ICC). Details are available on the Demize website.
The Demize have one home game remaining, on Friday July 17th when the Colorado Foxes make their first ever visit to Springfield. It will also be the final game of the season for the Demize. They visit the KC Brass July 9 and Des Moines Menace July 11th as well.

From the KC Star comes this announcement – The United States Youth Soccer Association is planning to hold its national youth soccer championships in Kansas City’s biggest suburb from July 20-25 2010. An official announcement about the tourney is expected next month.
The national championships are the culmination in a series of events known as the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Series in which more than 10,000 teams compete.
The national championship, which will draw 60 teams and 1,000 players from across the country, will be played at the new complex nearing completion at the corner of 135th Street and Switzer Road in south Overland Park. The city has scheduled a celebration to open the facility Aug. 29.
“The vision of the city in building this complex was to host the top events in the country,” Alan Blinzler, president of the Kansas State Youth Soccer Association, said in a prepared statement.
“The awarding of the 2010 U.S .Youth Soccer National Championships — the first ever such event in Kansas — speaks to that vision and the quality of the new complex,” Blinzler said
Overland Park has planned the 12-field soccer park since 2007. The city decided to build the complex in the aftermath of Johnson County’s failed attempt in 2006 to get voters to raise property taxes for 24 youth fields next to a stadium for the Kansas City Wizards.
Ultimately, plans for soccer fields and the Wizards stadium died in the Kansas suburbs and are now planned for redevelopment of the old Bannister Mall site across the state line.
Overland Park’s soccer complex is being paid for from an increase in its hotel tax — raised two years ago to 9 percent from 6 percent — and from user fees.
Pre-game is at 1:00 pm and the boys will kick off at 1:25 pm today on ESPN. While the U.S. Men are in their first-ever FIFA tournament final, five-time FIFA World Cup champions Brazil are making their fourth appearance in the Confederations Cup final and looking for their record-setting third title. Check the US Soccer website for background on the game.
If you really want to dive into the details, how about considering The Question: How is Brazil’s 4-2-3-1 different from a European 4-2-3-1? Hat tip to one of my new favorites, Inside Minnesota Soccer, for the link.
Stefan Fatsis offers some thoughts on the game and it’s impact in Sports Illustrated with his article In soccer, U.S. still battling uphill (hat tip to Hillcrest Road)
It’s been a tough week for Europeans who hate America’s growing influence in world soccer. First, ESPN acquired the rights to show some English Premier League games — in England. Then, the U.S. men’s national team outthought and outmuscled the world’s top-ranked team, Spain, 2-0 in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup in South Africa.
Finally, since you’ve made it this far, you need some background on the constant roar you hear in the background at the games. The Pitch Invasion offers the best story that I’ve seen with Satan’s Instrument? The Vuvuzela and Noisemaking in World Football as he places the vuvuzela in context both with other noisemakers through the years as well as soccer on the African continent. Enjoy!
PS – did I mention Grant Wahl thinks the US can win?

Congratulations to the crew from Springfield who were chosen to represent and earned their way to Sioux Falls, SD this past week. This team was part of the the fun, and success, of playing and working at the highest levels.
Back Row – Patrick Burns and Ryan Cooksey
Front Row – Alysan Burgbacher, Mark Lassman-Eul, Andy Wilkinson and Jessica McCutcheon
Update – Patrick, Ryan, and Andy all worked semi finals on Tuesdays. Only one missouri referee got a final due to so many teams from missouri being in the finals.
It was the first trip to Regionals for Alysan, a high school senior-to-be at New Covenant where she will play on the boys team this season, along with Jessica, who will be a sophomore at Rogers State (OK). The group was also joined by Jeff Kohlmeyer and Kelly Ross who worked as an assigner and a mentor, respectively.
Nice article in the Waynesville Daily Guide pointing to the large turnout at the first ever tryouts for the new Pulaski United FC program in Waynesville.
More than 90 soccer players ranging in age from eight to 17 from all over Pulaski County participated in the tryouts. “We are very pleased with the number of players that came out and demonstrated their skills during the club’s tryouts,” said David Lowe, Vice-President of the Pulaski United FC.
Lowe added that, “Many of the club’s younger players will one day form the nucleus of the high school soccer teams throughout the county and some will go on to play soccer in college.”
Pulaski United FC will conduct a second week of competitive soccer tryouts for ages eight to 17 from Aug. 3-7. Contact David Lowe at 573-774-2862 or dlowe@embarqmail.com for questions.

Missouri Elite FC is a “Girls-Only” soccer club that has been providing training for six years in Southwest Missouri. You have known us as JB Marine Springfield but it’s time to spread our wings, much like the graduates of our training programs have. With alumni college players like Jessie Yach (Nixa career scoring leader), Regina Bodine (Willard) and Maggie Schrier (Glendale captain and Homecoming Queen), it’s easy to recognize our emphasis on training, sportsmanship and education.
In addition to the new name, the girls will be trading in their old green uniforms for new Argentina blue Adidas uniforms. However, the club name and colors are the only things that are changing. The club’s coaching philosophies and goals will remain the same. The club is committed to developing female athletes and will utilize female coaches who grew up playing in the area to assist with player development. The younger teams will continue to focus on skill development and fostering a true passion for the sport.
The older girls will continue to advance their knowledge and ability to take their game to the collegiate level. The club’s U18 team will travel to several college showcase tournaments where they will get exposure to college coaches from all over the region. The end goal is college scholarships for the girls who want to play college soccer.

Wow, the hyperbole overflows…
In one of the greatest matches in U.S. Soccer history, the U.S. Men’s National Team got goals by Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey to stun No. 1-ranked Spain 2-0 and advance to the finals of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa. The U.S. will face Brazil/ South Africa in their first ever men’s final in a major international competition on any level on Sunday, June 28 in Johannesburg.
Game time Sunday is 1:00 pm, live on ESPN. I’ll probably watch it in St Louis before heading back to Springfield from St Louis later that afternoon. Where will you watch it?
I very much enjoyed the game on Wednesday but all I can think is what team is it that showed up for the first two games? And if the planets hadn’t aligned in the final group game when the US scored 3 and Brazil shut out Italy 3-0, where would we be now? So I’m not going to get to excited at this stage, although I am more excited than I was down after watching the previous 4 games the US has played (including Honduras and Costa Rica). And if we don’t get to see more of Charlie Davies, Conor Casey, Jay Demerit and even Jonathan Spector and Benny Feilhaber, then what goes down?
