(Heath) Melugin Magical

09-Oct-08

Couldn’t pass up sending you over to this story in the Missouri State Standard, the student newspaper:

Missouri State coach Jon Leamy said he has finally figured out what Heath Melugin does best: score goals. Now, Leamy’s hoping the freshman forward can continue to boost the Bears like he has done in recent games.

Melugin scored two goals Tuesday night as the Bears beat Central Arkansas 2-1 at Plaster Field.

“He just has a knack for scoring goals,” Leamy said. “He’s a big, strong kid that is capable of making plays happen.”

Of course, most of us did know that right?

It’s also a great example of why I spend the time I do at College soccer games. Based upon the traffic patterns I get on this website, whether for individual stories or photos, its pretty easy to figure out the ‘money’ is in the High School game. Not the millions that the local rag spent to create a high school sport site that is slow, difficult to navigate and manage. And too narrowly focused, despite their own research that other sports bring in significant traffic.

Luis Arroyave, who writes the Red Card column for the Chicago Tribune, seems to have figured it out however. Great story about the University of Illinois-Chicago game this week when they hosted Ohio State. I would have dragged a few of my friends out to this one if I was still there and it was a great reminder of why I keep going out. You should join me more often folks.

Believe it or not, I no longer like being in a college atmosphere.

It makes me feel old, it makes me miss college and it makes me say things like, “Man, when I was a senior in high school, she was only a…” Well, you get the picture. I rarely even go back to Madison, the place where I spent the four greatest years of my life. It’s too depressing for me.

Great Lakes Valley Conference Adds UIS and Maryville

09-Oct-08

There will be two new schools playing soccer next year in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced on Wednesday that Maryville University and the University of Illinois at Springfield have been admitted to the Conference bringing the league’s membership to 15 institutions. The addition of the two members was unanimously approved by the GLVC Council of Presidents at their Oct. 7 meeting.

Maryville and University of Illinois-Springfield will officially become members of the GLVC upon receipt of initiation fees entitling both institutions to voting privileges at the GLVC Winter Meeting on Jan. 16, 2009. Maryville is located in St. Louis, and along with the University of Missouri-St. Louis, will be one of two GLVC institutions in the St. Louis area. UIS resides in Springfield, Ill., the capital of the state of Illinois, and will be centrally located in the GLVC.

According the the Evansville Courier & Press, while the move would add “Divisions” to the GLVC, soccer would not be included in that breakdown:

The league scheduling committee devised the three-division format to cut back on those trips. Teams would play an 18-game league schedule, including two against each in-division team and one each against everyone else, alternating home and away by season.

In the three-division format, there would be a North Division of Quincy, Springfield, Wisconsin-Parkside, Lewis, and St. Joseph’s. The West Division would be Drury, Rockhurst, Missouri Science & Technology, Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville. Illinois-Springfield does not play baseball yet, so USI would stay in the West in that sport. Soccer and softball do not have divisions.

There are also rumors of moves, the same article above noting Northern Kentucky has discussed a move to DI and the latest Drury rumor I’ve heard is that they would move to the MIAA. Hmmm…

NJCAA Regional Report: Justin Rogers Scores 4

08-Oct-08

My regular correspondent is dealing with a heavy class load this week at KU so I’m on my own.

From the Neosho Daily News report by Cody Thorn (along with a photo from a game earlier this season):

Springfield Glendale product Justin Rogers (2008) had a career day for the Crowder College soccer team Saturday. Rogers tallied four goals and led the Roughriders to a 4-3 win in overtime over visiting Cowley County Community College at Lions Field.

Rogers scored his first goal at the 15-minute mark. The Tigers (4-6) came back to take a 2-1 lead at halftime. Rogers tallied a pair of goals late in the second half that gave the Roughriders (3-7-3) the lead. He scored with 15 minutes left and then with seven minutes remaining in the game. His last goal was the first ever hat trick in Crowder’s history.

Cowley County tied the game at 3-3 with a goal with five minutes left in the contest. Rogers scored his fourth goal two minutes into overtime on a pass from Vinnie Machado. Other assists in the game came from Emilio Trujillo and Rafael Broges.

Spencer Hunter (Ozark 2007) is starting at Stopper for the East Central CC Falcons. The Falcon’s are having a good year, splitting their two games against #7 Meramac. They beat JeffCo 2-0 and Crowder 1-0. The Falcons are 11-4-1 and one game away from an MCCAC Conference title it appears. They also will host the Regional Quarterfinals on October 18th.

And from the NJCAA website:

The Barton Community College men’s soccer team trimmed the number of unbeaten teams in the Jayhawk Conference standings to just two this past weekend with a 1-0 blanking of Cloud County at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. The win by the Cougars handed the Thunderbirds their 1st Jayhawk Conference loss of the season, falling to 6-1. That leaves Barton (5-0-1) and Johnson County (5-0).

Those two teams will hook up at 3 pm Saturday October 11th at Cougar Fields with the winner of that contest controlling its own destiny for the Conference championship as well as the No. 1 seed in upcoming Region VI post season action. Barton, ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA, is now 13-0-1 on the season. Cloud falls to 10-4 overall. Barton will be on the road Wednesday in non conference play when the Cougars travel to Oklahoma.

Southwest Missouri High School Soccer: Class 3 Coaches Poll

08-Oct-08

Class 3 Southwest Rankings

1-Kickapoo (35) 13-0
2-Glendale (28) 14-2
3-Joplin (15) 9-4
4-Parkview (13) 10-4
5-Rolla (8) 9-7-1

others receiving votes- Waynesville 7-5, Carthage 12-2, Willard 10-2-1

Just in time for the game between Waynesville and Rolla on Thursday, another reason (as if they needed more) to leave it all on the pitch. The primary change was Joplin’s move from 5th to 3rd while Parkview and Rolla both dropped one spot.

Missouri State Bears Beat Central Arkansas on Melugin’s Brace

08-Oct-08

Missouri State Bears - 2
Central Arkansas Bears - 1
Heath Melugin (Kickapoo 2008) scored in the 4th and 87th minute Tuesday night to help the Bear’s to the win at home. The first came from Johannes Demarzi’s throw-in and the second from Jordan Barne’s cross and both were necessary for the win as the UCA Bear’s scored 37 seconds after the second goal. The UCA goal was a result of indecision in the offensive end, allowing the visitors to steal the ball and initiate a successful counter-attack.

The MSU Bears website, which includes the annoying Homecoming entry ad that you cannot opt out of, only has cumulative statistics through October 3rd but it doesn’t take significant math skills to see that Melugin’s three goals in the past three games have leapfrogged him to the top of the scoring list for the Bears.

The Bears (3-6-3) will travel to Drake (8-2-0) on Saturday October 11th for a game at Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines, Iowa - home of the Regional’s in 2007 and somewhat recovered from the Spring floods apparently.

The game winner came in the 92nd minute, it was the third of Kyle “toad” Slagle’s goals on the evening. Slagle got the game winner on a 60 yard free kick. Toad took the kick from beyond midfield. The ball bounced once, Matt Magana, the keeper and a defender all went up for the ball. The keep got his fingertips on it, but the momentum carried the ball into the net for the golden goal!

Represent Springfield Soccer

07-Oct-08

Robbie Curtis (Ozark 2008) has played in 9 of the 10 games at Lincoln Memorial University (D2, South Atlantic Conference). He’s scored one goal, the game winner against Sheperd University, which is described below:

In the 87th minute, freshman Robbie Curtis (Ozark, MO) who had recently checked into the game for the first time used a pass from teammate James McLeish (Amprior, Ontario, Canada) and Willian Moura to find the back left corner which gave the Railsplitters a 2-1 lead. As fate would have it, the goal turned out to be the game-winner and the final blow in LMU’s victory over Shepherd University.

The Railsplitters are 7-2-1 overall, 2-0 in the SAC and are ranked 8th nationally.

Maggie Schrier (Glendale 2008) has started 4 of the 8 games this season for the Hendrix College Warriors (D3, SCAC), while playing in all 8 games. She is playing both outside Midfield and Defense. The Warriors record is 4-4, 1-3 in the Conference.

Adam Legg (Kickapoo 2008) has started 7 of the 8 games for the Hendrix College Warriors (D3, SCAC), as the team has opened the season with a 3-5 record, 1-3 in the Conference.

Quincy Conduff (Kickapoo 2008) is also a member of the Warriors (D3, Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) and has played in 5 of the 8 games this season.

Jason Matthew Taylor (Ozark 2008) helped lead Rockford College (D3, Northern Athletics Conference) to their first victory in four years on September 12th when the Regents defeated Marantha Baptist Bible College 2-1. Jason has started all six games and already has 51 saves as the team is 1-0 at home, 1-5 overall.

Michael Handley (Webb City 2008) is now the starting center back for the Ashford Saints (NAIA, Midwest Collegiate Conference ), starting 8 of 10 games including the past seven games. The team is 6-4 overall, 1-2 in the MCC. He cracks a lineup that lost only one starter last year.

Jacob Plocher (West Plains 2004) has played in 11 of the 13 games this season, starting 3, for the William Penn Statesmen (NAIA, Midwest Collegiate Conference) while scoring a pair of goals.

Matt Saner (West Plains 2006) joined Jacob at William Penn this year, transferring from Neosho CC. He has played in 5 games this season, starting 1. They’ll play at Ashford on October 15th.

Chris Shuler was named the MVC Defensive player of the week for his play in the non-conference games against Cal-Northridge and SLU.

Northridge managed just six shots in the 1-0 Bluejay shutout last Wednesday, while Schuler helped slow a talented Billiken attack Saturday at SLU. SLU striker and Hermann Trophy candidate Kyle Patterson managed only one shot in the match, with Schuler marking the gifted attacker. Schuler was given the second captain’s armband before the SLU match and responded with great leadership and terrific defensive plays.

This Week In Southwest Missouri Soccer

06-Oct-08

A somewhat quiet week ahead it seems, as teams recover from the tournament schedule that has got me worn out as well.

The Kickapoo Shootout returns this week, with games beginning on Friday and continuing through Saturday. Vianney is the biggest name and I’ll be offering up some background on all of the teams and the games as the week progresses. The Chief’s are working hard to make this a significant event, including advertising on my site and in other areas. It should be an excellent weekend of soccer.

Four weeks remain in the regular season and it’s time to start looking at Conference opportunities as well as District seeding. The one game I see that can have the biggest impact this week is Thursday’s game between the Rolla Bulldogs and Waynesville Tigers. The game features teams that sit at #3 and #4 in the Ozark Conference standings at the moment, and these two teams along with Camdenton are chasing the District 10 title.

On the College front, the Missouri State Bears hosts Central Arkansas Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. For the women’s game, the Southwest Baptist Bearcats have a pair of games this week, with Missouri Western visiting Thursday at 4:00 pm and Saturday will feature a rematch with Truman State. The Bearcat’s tied the #14 nationally-ranked Bulldogs on Saturday, 2-2, and spoiled their homecoming weekend by coming back from an 0-2 deficit. Saturday’s game could be a humdinger!

The US Men’s National Team could qualify for the final qualification round with a win on Saturday against Cuba. The game is being played at RFK Stadium in Washington DC and will be broadcast on ESPN Classic. It begins at 6:00 pm CST. Join us at Coester’s.

And a couple of shout outs - first to Sophomore Matt Magana , who broke the Bolivar Liberator soccer career assist record Saturday when he assisted Bradley Stillwagon on a goal. Matt now has 36 for his career.

The Glendale Falcon’s went 2-1 at the Gateway Classic in Collinsville, losing to St Thomas Aquinas (KS) 2-1 in the championship game of their bracket . They defeated Dunbar High from Lexington Ky in penalty kicks again after a 2-2 tie in regulation. Both goals were by Devon Newport on set pieces. Jordan Pitts comes up big for the second day in a row with a save in the pk shoot out . Ryan Partch nailed the final pk attempt to seal the win. The first win came against Morton (IL) and it went to sudden death penalty kicks after 1-1 tie in regulation. The Post-Dispatch offers some updates.
