Missouri Class 1 Final Four – Will Catholic Repeat?

Natalie Smid, Springfield Catholic (2011) vs SoBoCo, 2011 Quarterfinals

Natalie Smid, Springfield Catholic (2011) vs SoBoCo, 2011 Quarterfinals

The Class 1 Final 4 will open on Friday morning with an 11:00 am match between St Vincent and Orchard Farm. The Springfield Catholic girls will take the field to defend their State Title at 1:00 pm on Friday, opening with a semifinal against Kansas City-based Pembroke Hill. I’m picking St Vincent to advance to their second Final in three years where they will fall to Catholic for the second year in a row.

St Vincent Indians (21-4) –
Orchard Farm Eagles (17-7) –

St Vincent finished 3rd last year, beating Barstow 2-0 in the consolation game after falling to Catholic 1-0 on Natalie Smid’s 2nd half goal.

The team returns four All-State players from last season, led by juniors Kayla Seabaugh, a defender and a pair of forwards in Abby Lappe and Storm French, all 1st Team. Senior midfielder Emily Cissell was honorable mention and rounds out the group. Add freshman goalkeeper Katie Mattingly, who’s seen the difference between winning and losing while cheering her sister the last two years, and the team knows what is needed. Junior sweeper Storm French noted in the SE Missourian

“Now that the juniors and seniors have both experienced winning vs. getting third, we know what it’s like and we want to be back on top again.”

They’ve accomplished the first part of that goal by adjustments that have allowed the Indians to win 2 of the last 3 games in the second half. They went to halftime scoreless against St. Pius in the district title game and John Burroughs in the state quarterfinal contest. The Indians have allowed only 16 goals this season.

For the Orchard Farm Eagles, it all starts with Alexis Robbers (#2, Lou Fusz), an All-State first team midfielder for the Eagles as a sophomore last year who leads the team in scoring (29 goals, 13 assists) as a junior from her position. Robbers grew up in Largo, FL and moved to the St. Charles area prior to her sophomore season and has already committed to play for the MIAA Champion Central Missouri Mules. The Post Dispatch looked at the team early in the season and pointed to senior midfielder Andrea Liston and senior defenders Casey Kesselheim and Sareen Dargahi as keys to the season. Kesselhiem and Dargahi were key components in an Eagles squad that gave up just 36 total goals – or 1.44 per game – last season. Add in forward Brooke Burckhardt (24 goals) and the team has the tools to compete.

The school, located North of St Charles in the floodplains and farming community between the Mississippi and Missouri River, bounced back from last year’s OT loss to Trinity in the District Final to reach the Final 4 with an OT victory over Kennedy in the Quarterfinal on a pair of goals by Brooke Burckhardt, including the game-winner, and by Robbers. It’s the schools first trip to the Final 4 on the heels of its first ever District Title which will be the key difference in this game. Here’s the money quote for both teams however:

“It’s probably more gratifying this year than it has been the last few years,” St Vincen’ts Coach Wengert said about reaching the final four. “The first year you go, you don’t know what to expect. Last year, I thought maybe we went in a little overconfident and relaxed and didn’t play to our capabilities, whereas this year we’re definitely going to relish being in there and not taking anything for granted and we’re going to go do our best.”

Springfield Catholic (21-4) -
Pembroke Hill Raiders (13-13) –

The Fightin’ Irish won the title last year with two complete games, opening with their 1-0 win against St Vincent and followed with the 3-0 win over Trinity, sparked by then sophomore Bekah Bade’s game-winner in the second half. It was a measure of revenge for Catholic, who fell two Trinity 0-2 in the semifinal game the previous year as a combination of nerves and great goal-tending held them off. Like the St Vincent Indians, this team knows the difference between winning and losing and with 10 seniors who are making their third trip to State, this first game will set the tone.

The team is led by a quartet of 1st Team All-State players, starting in the middle with Natalie Smid (#16) who has been pulling the strings in midfield since her freshman year. The defense is anchored by Carsen Baron (#12) and Rebecca Mayus (#6) while Drury Panther signee Shelby Hatz (#14) provides breakaway speed on the wing and up top. Senior Andrea Parker (#2), headed for Drury with Hatz and Glendale’s Emily Cline, has moved into the middle with Baron providing a staunch, experience defense in front of junior All-Stater Megan Goetzinger in goal.

Junior Bekah Bade (#11), who scored the game-winner against Trinity last year, is joined up top by freshman Nicole Ortega (#8) while another freshman, Lydia Holtmann (#4) continues in her sisters footsteps at providing a skilled, hard-nosed midfielder to complement Smid. The Catholic bench goes 5-7 players deep which will play a significant role on the grass at Fenton as temperatures hit records for early June.

Pembroke, returning to Class 1 after finishing losing in the Class 2 District semifinals to O’Hara last year, return one All-Stater, 2nd team forward Camille Christie (#22) who leads the team with 24 goals scored. They have moved slowly up the Class 1 rankings this season, starting in the 6th slot to the 4th slot going into the Final 4. The team plays a strong schedule of Class 2 and Class 3 teams from Kansas City and Central Missouri. Elizabeth Wayda, also a junior, was 1st Team All-District along with Christie in 2010. Top scorers besides Christie include a trio with 6 apiece -Lilly Friedman, Erin Harvey and Wayda, while Kerry Levings has 5.

Pembroke has a history of success and it will not be an easy game but Catholic has 90 goals from five of their starters and speed to match every program in this region, losing only to Class 3 Glendale.

USA Faces Spain Saturday, Live on ESPN

Xavi-SpainThe U.S. will take on 2010 FIFA World Cup champion Spain on June 4 in Foxborough, Mass. Kickoff against the current No.1-ranked team in the world is set for 3:30 p.m. CT, and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN. Head Coach Bob Bradley announced the team roster two weeks ago and the team has been training since.

In addition to the game against Spain, the team will compete in the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup that will begin on Sunday. The USA opens play on Tuesday against Canada. Look for that story on Sunday.

Sporting KC opens their stadium with a game against my favorite team, the Chicago Fire, next Wednesday. The game is being broadcast on ESPN2 if you won’t be there either (dang). The next game at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park will be a CONCACAF Gold Cup game between the USA and Guadeloupe as well as a game between Canada vs Panama. Tickets still available.

Missouri Class 3 Girls Soccer Final Four

Emily Cline, Glendale Falcons (2011) at 2009 Semifinal vs IWA

Emily Cline, Glendale Falcons (2011) at 2009 Semifinal vs IWA

The Class 3 playoffs will open Friday at 5:00 pm with a St Louis semifinal between Incarnate Word and Ursuline Academy. The Glendale Falcons will then take on the defending State Champion Liberty Jays at 7:00 pm. It should be a pretty good weekend with three of the teams ranked in the ESPN Rise Powerade Fab 50 including #10 Liberty, #43 Incarnate Word and #47 Ursuline.

IWA and UA are newcomers to the list while Liberty moved up from #21. That of course follows their tumble to #21 from #2 that followed the loss to St Joe in early May. St Joe lost to Ursuline in the District Final (via PK’s), so my guess is we’ll see IWA get another shot at Liberty on Saturday.

Glendale Falcons (21-1) -
Liberty Jays (25-3) -

The Falcon’s return to the Final 4 for the second time in three years, led by a trio of players with experience in that last game. The team is led by Drury Panther signee Emily Cline, a two sport star who will play both soccer and basketball for the Panthers. She was a 2nd Team All-State pick last year. With juniors Molly Brewer (Scott Gallagher) and Alix Opfer (Springfield SC) patrolling the midfield, the key to the Falcon’s game will be to rely on a stout defense and take advantage of their set pieces. The team is playing their best soccer of the season, coming off of their Quarterfinal win over an experienced and physical Rock Bridge Bruins team. Scoring has been diversified, ensuring the Jay’s can’t concentrate on Cline (49 goals). This is a young team however, starting with freshman keeper Kindra Lierz and a group of sophomores (Wampler, Sprouse, Raff, Yoakam and Weaver) who will be asked to do some heavy lifting.

When you discuss Liberty, the first two topics are their All-American’s, Shea Groom (#2, Forward) and Kaysie Clark (#7, Midfield). Kaysie wasn’t available during the Jay’s swing through St Louis, coming out after a short time in the opening game at IWA. The Jay’s were the stronger team but went to PK’s with IWA, who were playing a very defensive game. The Jay’s won in PK’s. As the Liberty Tribune notes, the team only lost two starters from last year’s State Title team so this will be an experienced team looking to send their seniors out on the proper note

Considering they lost only two seniors from last year’s state championship team, the Blue Jays have had plenty of time to work on that. Not to mention, Liberty has a closely tied senior class that includes starters: Groom up top; Kaysie Clark, Kelsey Goff (HM All-State) and Jenna Turner (2nd Team All-State) in the midfield; and Carr and Kaely Tott in the back. Junior back Delaney Kiely, a returning starter and 1st Team All-State, and sophomore forward Haley Baldridge, a contributor last season, made the transition to this season even easier.

Ursuline Academy (16-4-1) -
Incarnate Word Red Knights (16-4-1) -

The state trip is Ursuline’s second; the Bears lost 2-1 to Incarnate Word in the large-school final in 2004. They also lost to the Red Knights 1-2 early this season and finished second behind IWA in the Conference. The season opened with the Post-Dispatch consistently ranking St Joseph and Ursuline above Incarnate Word. That’s now changed on the cusp of the Finals and the key difference going into the games will be IWA’s experience in the Finals, with this their 3rd trip in 4 years.

2011 – IWA defeats Pattonville in Sectionals and Francis Howell North in the Quarterfinals
2010 – IWA falls to Cor Jesu in the Quarterfinals after defeating Eureka in the Sectional game
2009 – IWA wins the title, defeating Lee’s Summit North 2-1. The reached the Final after first defeating Glendale 5-1 in the semifinal, Nerinx Hall 1-0 in the Quarterfinal and Hazelwood West 3-2 in the Sectional.
2008 – IWA defeats Glendale 5-1 in the Quarterfinals to reach the Final 4.

Ursuline is sending 8 players to the college ranks – Brooke Barczewski to IUPUI, Alexa Dickerhoff to Rockurst, Lindsay Elking and Andrea Strebler to SLU, Molly Huber to Kentucky, Lauren Rein to William Jewell, Courtney Vonder Haar to SIU-Edwardsville and Mallory Yant to Brown. Elking was 2nd Team All-State last year

IWA – Kenzie Combs to Bellarmine, Natalie Kuhlenberg to Quincy, Jamie Helfer to Hannibal-Lagrange, Mo Kelly to Mississippi College, Erin Lucido to Iowa Wesleyan, Sam Savio and Erin Winschel to Central Methodist,

Missouri Class 2 Girls Soccer Final Four

2010 Missouri Girls Class 2 Semifinal, Notre Dame de Sion vs Notre Dame St LouisThe Class 2 semifinal round will open at noon on Friday with a pair of St Louis teams facing off, followed by a pair of Kansas City area teams at 2:00 pm

Notre Dame Rebels (18-6-1) -
Visitation Vivettes (19-5) –
A rematch of last years final, won by Visitation. The two teams met in the final match of the regular season in a game won by Viz 4-3. Here’s the Post-Dispatch description:

The Vivettes dominated the ball and spent most of the match knocking it around on the Rebels’ half of the field. Lydia Harlan netted her first career hat-trick, scoring the last three Visitation goals after junior Julia Bartolacci tied the game 1-1 with 15 minutes to go in the first half. Harlan, who now has 11 goals on the season, is one of the many weapons Visitation has at its disposal. Sophomore striker Jade Klump and senior midfielder Courtney Young lead the team in goals with 20 and 16, respectively.

For the Rebels, midfielder Michelle Auer (#4), tallied two goals in the game, pushing her season total to 41 at the time. She now has 49 goals and 17 assists for 115 points. Auer was the 2010 Class 2 Player of the Year and has committed to SIU-Edwardsville. Jessica Bayens (#3) is headed for D2 Rockhurst and Elizabeth Flowers (#13) will play at McKendree (NAIA).

Visitation is sending Mackenzie Barringhaus and Ellie Bumb to Bellarmine (D2-GLVC) while Kaitlyn Deister will play at Missouri S&T (D2-GLVC), Courtney Young joins Auer at SIU-Edwardsville (D1-OVC) and Lydia Harlin is headed to Denison (D3)

Harrisonville Wildcats (23-4) -
Notre Dame de Sion Storm (15-6) -

A rematch of last year’s Quarterfinal game, won by the Storm 1-0, will call on the Wildcat’s full powers to advance to the title match. The Storm, ranked either #3 or #2 all year in the Missouri Soccer Coaches poll, are led by Junior forward Caroline Shay and defender Haley Fritzlen, a Midwest All-American last year headed to Marquette this season (Shay has also verballed to Marquette, with NDdSion coached by Marquette grad Matt Darby.

The two teams met early this season, in a game won 3-0 by Notre Dame de Sion. Later in the season, Pembroke Hill, who Harrisonville defeated 2-1 had lost 4-0 the previous week to the Storm. . Another factor to consider is strength of schedule. Notre Dame de Sion competed in the MO-KS Border battle, losing 0-2 to St Thomas Aquinas as well as playing a full complement of Class 3 programs in the KC area.

The Wildcats have four college signees, including Christina Harold (#1) and Alex Erickson (#2), headed to Park University (NAIA), Shalyne Wheeler (#7) to Southwest Baptist University (D2-MIAA) and Karson Wilson (#18), Emporia State University (D2-MIAA) who will look to finish their careers on the highest note possible.

The Championship game between Notre Dame (STL)/Visitation and Harrisonville/Notre Dame (KC) will be played Saturday at 4:00 pm.

The 3rd place game between Notre Dame (STL)/Visitation and Harrisonville/Notre Dame (KC) will be played Saturday at 10:00 am.

Common opponents for Harrisonville and Notre Dame (STL) is Marshall. The Rebels walloped Marshall 8-0 at the West Plains Tournament in late April while Harrisonville defeated Marshall 4-0 earlier in April.

KC sends four to CONCACAF

Sporting KC will be well represented when the CONCACAF Gold Cup begins in June.

KC has four players who will play for their national teams in the tournament that determines the champion of North America, Central America and the Carribean.

Shavar Thomas will play for Jamaica, Roger Espinoza for Honduras, Craig Rocastle for Grenada and Stephane Auvray for Guadeloupe.
