GLVC: Missouri S&T Miners host Indianapolis Greyhounds
Brandon Moore, M S&T (Rolla 2005) defends against Brian Fishback, Indy Greyhounds (Parkview 2005)

Missouri S&T Miners - 1
Indianapolis Greyhounds - 0
An important win for the Miner’s Friday night at home as senior Corey Bailey (Olathe) pairs with Mario Calderon to ‘make a play’ in the words of Coach Joe Ahearn. In a game that featured a 13-6 shot advantage for the Hounds, the true opportunities were few and far between. That’s when you need some creativity and that’s what Calderon delivered, and Bailey closed the deal.

Much like Thursday’s game between the Chicago Fire and LA Galaxy, when C. Blanco’s back heel flick created a break-away for Rolfe, Calderon created something special for the Miners. As he battled to win a 50/50 ball near the midfield, with his back to the goal he quickly sent a ball up and over the defense. Bailey’s anticipation and run onto the ball was equally critical, allowing him to stay a step ahead of the defense and then calmly slot his shot to the far post for the game-winner. A play you need your seniors to make, and one that will go a long way towards moving the Miner’s back into the GLVC playoffs if they can deliver again on Sunday against St Joseph’s. Go Miner’s!

She’s pictured getting the first SOG.

KSPR Soccer Coverage

Drury Panthers vs Missouri Southern Lions If you aren’t watching KSPR-33 news (ABC) locally, then flip over to their Sports coverage tonight. Their Athlete of the Week tonight is a local prep soccer player. Update - congrats Tim. Oh, and here’s the video.

Mike Scott was also out to interview Steve Wilczewski and Marco Cherisma after last nights game against Missouri Southern (pictured). You can see the interviews as well as the first three goals by clicking on this link. Be patient, it’s at the end of the clip.

And keep an eye on MSSU - last night’s result was unusual and the team’s play was affected by injuries I’ve discovered.

Drury Panthers Dismantle MSSU Lions

24-Sep-08

Drury Panthers vs Missouri Southern Lions
Micah Whorton scoring the final goal

Drury Panthers - 5
Missouri Southern Lions - 0
The Drury Panthers looked like a finally tuned sports car this evening as they faced their Western neighbors. The goals were all scored from inside the six yard box as the Panthers moved the ball with pace and urgency throughout the game. The first came in the 6th minute when Peter Higgins nodded a header past the keeper that was sent in by Ben Taylor. Marco Cherisma scored a pair, the first in the 13th minute from Taylor’s assist, the second in the 32nd from Steve Wilczewski.

The second goal was a classic, as the play started near the center circle as Higgin’s received a ball that he sent back to Taylor who was already beginning to move forward from his defensive position. Taylor’s give-and-go with Wilczewski 35 yards out was perfectly weighted and sent Taylor in unmarked on the left side. His run into the box allowed him to pick Cherisma out with a square ball that completely exposed the Lion’s defense.

With the #1 ranked University of Northern Kentucky Norsemen game on Friday, the Panther’s began looking to the bench early in the second half and the attack continued. The sense of urgency only seemed to increase as the competition for playing time on this squad is high. Micah Whorton was the primary beneficiary as he scored a brace in the second half, the first as he walked a ball into the net after the keeper went down and the second via header (pictured above) at the far post.

The Panther’s lost their final 4 conference games last year, including a 2-0 loss to NKU in their final home game, eliminating them from the GLVC playoffs. The string began after a 1-0 OT win at MSSU October 7th. While there is an obvious difference on the scoreboard, the key question is will not be ability. As I noted last year, it was not opportunity or ability that doomed the Panthers, it was a lack of discipline. Much like a players success in the transition from high school to college is defined not by athleticism or skill, but attitude, so will the Panther’s success this weekend be determined by their mental toughness.

And lest I forget, the Women will also have a challenge on their hands as the UNK Lady Norse are now ranked #3 in the Midwest Region, just behind Wisconsin-Parkside and ahead of #8 Drury. They just cracked the national rankings as well, at #20.

NJCAA Soccer Report: Barton Faces Garden City Tonight

24-Sep-08

A tough Laramie County Community College (7-2-1) took the trip from Wyoming to Great Bend, Kansas Saturday night for a non-conference soccer game. Barton County prevailed winning 3-1, and improving their season record to 10-0 on the year. The Springfield Demize players all had a big hand in the win contributing on every goal scored in the match. James Neighbour recorded the assist on the first goal of the match giving him his team leading sixth assist on the year. Oscar Narvaez had the second assist of the match lifting a dangerous free kick into the box which was headed home. Barton’s third goal was a rebound put-back from Kyle Dubay late in the first half. Donovan Dowling recorded a couple of quality saves and was quoted in the Great Bend Tribune saying:

When you’re playing better competition, obviously they’re going to have more chances of coming through, but for the most part, my defense is so strong, and I credit all of my shutouts to them.

Dowling and the rest of the Barton defense, including fellow Demize teammate Ous Senghore have seven shutouts in ten games, and have conceded only three goals thus far. As of Tuesday, that ranked Dowling number six in the NJCAA in goals against average.

The win sets up a huge game Wednesday (tonight) with conference rival Garden City Community College. Garden is also undefeated touting a 7-0 record and a number 10 ranking in the latest NJCAA national poll. Barton came in at number 4 in the same poll. Garden has yet to defeat Barton in their four year history, which means Barton will definitely be getting their best shot, especially with Garden coming in as the underdog. The winner of the game will be the front runner to win the KJCCC conference championship and garner the number one seed for the tournament at the end of the regular season.

The way the regional system works is there are a total of 24 regions in NJCAA division 1 soccer. Each region will establish their winner, and send them on to districts to compete for one of the eight spots in the National Tournament. In Barton’s case, Kansas is their own region, consisting of the teams in the KJCCC (Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference). This means that Barton will have to go through the same teams they play in conference to win their region. The same is true for the Missouri teams as well, meaning Jefferson, St. Louis teams, Crowder, etc will all be playing each other for their respective regional title. Clearly for Barton, this means a re-match with Garden at the end of the year is likely to determine their regional champion.

NJCAA Correspondent Austin Dowling

Editor’s Note: Cody Thorn of the Neosho Daily News (and Carthage Press) provides the best soccer coverage of any newspaper in the region, and he files this report on the Crowder College Roughriders which includes a nice action shot of Bolivar’s Ryan Toombs:

Playing at home for the first time in a while — August 29 was the last day at home — the vagabond Crowder College Roughriders soccer team looked for its first home win.

That wait will have to go a while longer.

A goal by Michael Brennan in the 109th minute — in double overtime — lead Blue River Community College from Kansas City to a 1-0 win over Crowder in a Region XVI game played at Lions Field.

Crowder is now 2-5-3. Blue River improved to 4-6. The Roughriders play Friday in Union, Mo., against East Central Community College in another Region XVI game.

Glendale Falcons vs Joplin Eagles
P Baltz, R Partch, J McDermid, R Squires in the air, T Six, N Fisher and B Aggus in red on the ground with M Duncan hidden, but on the ball.

Glendale Falcons - 3
Joplin Eagles - 1
In a game that had both teams looking to November and a potential Sectional match up, it was tied 0-0 at the end of the first half. The Falcon’s had the best opportunity in the first half, when sophomore Geovanni Lara Luke Barr held his ground on the upright and denied Graham Basecke’s shot from 10 yards out from a scramble following a corner kick. It took a second save by senior John McDermid to keep the Falcon’s off the board in this case. As the second half began, McDermid showed his reaction skills, deflecting a hard shot from close range up and off the cross bar. Glendale continued to force the play however and were rewarded with a PK, due to a hand ball in the box, in the 47th minute. Devon Newport confidently finished for the ultimate game winner.

Sophomore Alec Martinez got the second goal, as he did a great job of holding his ground at the far post, putting himself in the position to nod Cameron Dugan’s cross just inside the far post. The Falcon’s final goal came in the 60th, with Patrick Baltz simply redirecting a square ball from Graham Basecke beyond McDermid’s dive.

Joplin scored a late goal after their junior captain, Max Duncan, blasted a ball that was initially parried but not cleared. Goal scored by Taylor Six. Update - thanks Luke, my mistake!

Kickapoo Chiefs - 2
Parkview Vikings - 0
Kickapoo got goals from Lane Chapman and Ian Kennedy to win what was generally described as a physical affair. The win solidifies the Chief’s aim of earning one of the top two spots in the District seeding in November. The Parkview site has a write up.

Carthage Tigers - 2
Ozark Tigers - 1

Camdenton Lakers - 8
Hillcrest Hornets - 1
The Lakers got a goal 30 seconds into game by Jeff Moffitt in going on to a surprisingly large margin against a Hornet’s squad that is having a good year. Goals were scored by Nate Buttram (2), Rayder
Bennett, Drew Whitney, Jake Schuster, Sal La Ferla and Jake Tamm. First goals of the season for Schuster, La Ferla, and Tamm.

Hillcrest scored a nice goal just before half on a one time volley shot outside the corner of the 18 that sunk into the far post upper 90. Goal was scored by #7.

Rolla Bulldogs - 9
West Plains Zizzers - 0

Waynesville Tigers - 6
Lebanon Yellowjackets - 1
Goals were scored by Ben Moore assisted by Mark Ward, Brandon Kilthau assisted by Kyle Varner, Eric Iverson scored two goals assisted by Kyle Varner, Wade Holcomb scored assisted by Karl Dupont, and Karl Dupont scored with an assist from Pat Sweetsir.

Springfield Catholic - 5
Bolivar Liberators - 0
After losing twice to Bolivar Varsity last year, the Catholic Varsity was able to jump on the scoreboard early when David Bailey shot the ball from the right baseline and hitting the far left side of the goal only 12 minutes into the game.

Big College Games This Weekend

23-Sep-08

In Springfield this week there are a several games with plenty to recommend. Lot’s to see outside of Springfield as well, which is also highlighted.

Wednesday - The Drury Panthers men’s team host the Missouri Southern Lion’s. Game time is 7 pm at Harrison Stadium and there are a full slate of local players represented on these two teams. Drury is still offering their $100 Season Athletic Pass as well as new events for youth players at the games (details below). Come support!

    Game of the Week

College Soccer: Drury Panthers vs Northern KentuckyFriday - The Drury Panthers will host Northern Kentucky University, game time is 7:30 pm. The Norsemen are ranked #1 in the country and extended their regular-season winning streak to 29 games with a 3-1 defeat of visiting Missouri S&T on Sunday. Tony Ray, a defender who leads the team in assists with 5, was featured in the Louisville Courier prior to the game. Drury is #1 in the GLVC at the moment, with a 4-0 record and 6 game winning streak, while NKU sits in 2nd with a 3-0 GLVC record.

Same situation in the individual statistics as the Panther’s Steve Wilczewski (Glendale 2006) leads the league with 8 goals and 4 assists for 20 points in 6 games. NKU’s Steven Beattie is just behind him, with 9 goals and 1 assist for 19 points in 7 games. Drury’s Marco Cherisma has 5 goals for 10 points, and Adam Peterson ranks ninth in the league in points per game at 1.50 with his four goals and one assist which points to more balanced scoring for the Panthers. Last year’s meeting was a 2-0 win for NKU at Drury, effectively knocking the Panther’s out of the GLVC Tournament.

The Women will play at 5:00 pm and will face a key test as well. Currently #1 in the GLVC with a similar 4-0 record, NKU comes in tied for 4th with a 2-1 record. The Norse finished 4th last year, just behind Drury and are currently ranked #20 nationally.

Sunday - The Drury Panthers host Indianapolis Greyhounds, with the women’s game at 12:00 pm and the men at 2:30 pm. Both the men’s and women’s teams are in 4th place and will be looking to keep pace early in the season. The men’s game feature’s the final visit for Brian Fishback (Parkview 2005), who wears #10, led team in scoring with 13 goals in 2007 and leads the team in assists this season with 3. He wears the captain’s armband for the Greyhounds and is the midfield general. If the entire Parkview team isn’t there, I’ll be disappointed!

Sunday - The Missouri State Lady Bears host the new Division 1 program, the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars. The Cougars are 4-3, including a win over SEMO Saturday. The Bear’s are 5-3-1 and are led by Jackie Jasper, who just set the career record for wins and shutouts, surpassing her predecessor Alexis Stormo.

At Rolla, the Missouri S&T Miners will host GLVC opponents Indianapolis on Friday and St Joseph’s on Sunday. I’ll be at the games on Friday, enroute to St Louis for a long weekend with my family to celebrate my birthday. Both games on Friday will be an excellent measure of the Miner’s opportunities for post-season play, while Sunday’s games are must win to keep pace.

At Joplin, the Missouri Southern Lions host Truman State, the defending MIAA Champions and currently #4 in the National rankings, jumping from#10. They are 7-0 while MSSU is 2-5 so it will be a challenge for the Lion’s but a great opportunity to see some quality soccer.

The men will host the Newman Jets at 7 pm Saturday. The Jet’s are a D2 program in Wichita that compete in the Heartland Conference and include former Carthage Tiger Nick Pfeifer (2005). They are 3-4-1 going into tomorrow’s game at Rockhurst, and will also host Drury next week.

SBU Bearcats host Drury PanthersAt Bolivar, the Southwest Baptist Bearcats have a pair of home games this week against MIAA foes. The SBU Bearcats will defend their 4-0-0 record on Thursday against Emporia State, with hopes of ending the day with the best start in the history of SBU soccer. Game time is 4:00 pm.

Washburn visits on Saturday. That game will also start at 4:00 pm. Through their first four contests, the Bearcats have outscored their opponents 21-1. Keep an eye on #14, Rhiane Mitchell, who has scored 10 of them (pictured against Drury earlier this season).

=====================
Drury Panthers LogoFuture Panthers and Lady Panthers (12 and under) will be encouraged to come on down after games and play some ball for a few minutes with selected Panthers and Lady Panthers, who will stick around to make it an even more memorable event for the kids.

After all, who wouldn’t enjoy a chance to grab an autograph, kick the soccer ball around on the turf at Harrison Stadium … and in general, really get to know “Your Panthers?” I also wanted to drop a reminder on the special activities we have during Drury soccer home contests this fall.

Our Andy’s “Compete For A Concrete” promotion - in which kids 12-and-under come out onto the field at halftime of soccer games and try to score a goal against “celebrity keepers” for Andy’s treats - has been very popular to date. The first volleyball home match of the season is Tuesday (7 p.m. vs. UMSL), and I know there’s a serving contest for the little folks to try to take home Andy’s as well.

Got a youth team interested in getting in on the fun at a future Drury soccer game? Then give head coach Alf Bilbao (873-7449) or associate head coach Ryan Swan ((873-7830) a call. We’ll make sure they not only get recognized over the P.A. system, but leave with some Andy’s treats and a good, healthy workout on the turf after the final DU game of the day has been completed.

Camdenton Lakers host Sedalia Smith-Cotton

Camdenton Lakers - 7
Sedalia Smith-Cotton - 1
In a game that indicates how strong the competitive juices flow between these teams, despite the move out of District 9 by Camdenton, these Central Missouri squads went at each other hard from the opening kick off. After seeing the Lakers a 2nd time now this season, the key element I see is a willingness across the entire team to go to the ball and challenge every play. It’s like watching a high-pressure EPL game as they force their opponents to play quickly or defend their attack.

The Laker’s got the lead in the 18th minute from a corner kick when #2 Drew Whitney, redirected the ball that fell to him and just over the outreached arms of the goalkeeper. Smith-Cotton thought they had tied the game in the 32nd minute only to see the goal called back for offsides.

I headed home at halftime, having stopped on the way home from a business meeting in Columbia. The second half featured a hat trick by Rayder Bennett, a brace from Jeff Moffitt and one by Nate Buttrum.

Sedalia graduated 10 starters on last years District Championship team but have a pair of talented midfielders leading the way. We’ll check back in on District 9 later this season.

New Covenant Academy Warriors - 5
Thomas Jefferson - 1

Greenwood Blue Jays - 2 (PKs)
Bolivar Liberators - 1
Greenwood would dominate the first half of play even though the Liberators got on the board first when Bradley Stillwagon finished an assist from Matt Magana. Greenwood would tie the game with six minutes to go in the first half. No more goals in regulation, with the Jay’s getting the win on the 4th PK.

Carthage Tigers - 10
Aurora Houn ‘Dawgs - 0
Carthage goals by Phillip Devillers (3), Cole Beckham (2), Joe Curti (2), Lorenzo Salas, Christian Solis and Jose Lopez.

Cassville Wildcats - 10
Columbus (KS) - 2
Five goals were scored in each half. Luis Ortega had three goals, and Justin Mills and Bryan Schroeder both had two goals. Other goal scorers were Matt Angel, Matt Frazier and Otto Franco. Schroeder also had three assists for the night.

Monett Cubs - 1
Willard Tigers - 0
The Cub’s avenge their loss this weekend at the hands of the Tigers, who won by a similar margin en route to winning the Cub’s Tournament.

Crocker Lions
- 4 (2 OT)
Belle - 3
Goals scored by Sophomore Jessie Tart (2), Freshman Teddy Zeigenbein (1) and the OT goal was scored by Tjalling Bosker

Nixa Eagles - 4

Kickapoo Chiefs - 4
Branson Pirates - 0
Goals by Brock Ruggeri, Skyler Russell, Spencer Price, Mike Anderson. Assists by Ian Kennedy, Tyler Bennett.

Carl Junction Bulldogs - 2
Neosho Wildcats - 1
The Bulldogs led 2-0 at the half after goals by Stefan Klute, unassisted, and Logan Landis on a penalty kick. Jordan Blevins scored on a penalty kick for Neosho in the 62nd for the final margin.

This Week in Southwest Missouri High School Soccer

22-Sep-08

This time next week we’ll be ready to start thinking about September in the past tense, the season is progressing quickly. Three weeks into the season, with six to play, and some interesting battles are developing.

Tuesday will feature Joplin visiting Glendale. The Eagles should be considered the favorite in District 12 and a game against Glendale is always a good measuring stick.

Across town there will be an important District 11 game as Parkview visits Kickapoo. The Vikings are 6-1 with their only loss a 1-0 shutout at Glendale. The Chiefs are coming off their big win at Chaminade. This one could determine the #2 seed in Districts. Big game!

Thursday the Bolivar Classic begins, with Greenwood, New Covenant, Clinton, Marshfield and Warrensburg all participating in this round robin event that will finish on Saturday.

There’s also a full slate of Ozark Conference games to consider on Tuesday and Thursday and I’m going to have to figure out where things stand in the Central Ozark Conference as well. Coach Schmitt is doing his usual exemplary effort maintaining an Ozark Conference standings and the Class 2 District 5 information. Anyone aware of a COC standings sheet?

The college slate is very interesting, enough so that I’ll have a separate story Tuesday. Mark down Wednesday night’s men’s game at Drury now though. The Missouri Southern Lions are visiting, the game will be played at Harrison Stadium at 7:00 pm. There are 8 local boys between the two teams getting regular playing time. We should represent as well!

Some stories from last week worth pointing to as well:
Anne Prenger (Catholic 2008) and her UMSL Triton teammates got their first win Sunday. It was also Anne’s first start.

The Rolla Daily News caught up with Tyler Sinnott - Multi-sport star Sinnott sets new standard for Bulldog boys’ soccer

Mike Howard has seen a lot of good goal scorers during his stint as Rolla High School boys’ soccer head coach. In fact, he’s seen pretty much all of them, considering he’s been the Bulldog head coach for 17 of the program’s 18 years. And Tyler Sinnott stands No. 1.

And a shout out to the Neosho Wildcats, new COC members who got their first ever Conference win last week. Cody Thorn of the Neosho Daily News offers a great story

It was something in the making for 24 years now — a conference victory. Without a conference for 23 years of their existence, the Neosho Wildcats soccer team made history Thursday night.

And as we enter the new week, I’m about to hang it up regarding The Magazine. I haven’t managed the writing and editing process very well, and real life is intruding, with bills to pay and clients to take care of. I’m typing this at 11 pm Sunday night after another weekend of struggle balancing the demands. It will probably take me another day or two to come to grips with the reality that I’ve failed on this one. Formal announcement to come :(
