The 2011 Missouri State Cup will be held June 11 – 16, 2011 in St. Louis, MO at the SLYSA and Sportport complexes. The Missouri State Cup is the first leg of the US Youth National Championship Series. All age groups (Under 13 up to Under 19) will participate June 11th – 16th. The 2012 Girls State Cup will be played in the Fall later this year as MYSA separates the tournaments by gender.

The state and regional events are a part of the annual US Youth Soccer National Championship Series that features over 10,000 teams, each competing for a chance to advance from state, to region and ultimately the national championship. In addition to the competition, teams are highlighting their talents for numerous college coaches that use the events as a primary recruiting tool.

State champions advance to one of four US Youth Soccer Regional Championships, where 926 teams will compete. The Region II Tournament (Midwest) will be held June 24-29 in Fox Cities, WI.

The National Championship field consists of these regional champions and National League representatives.

There is ONE girls teams from Southwest Missouri participating this year, the Springfield SC U15 squad that consists primarily of high school freshman and includes players such as:
Aspen Hawkins, Class 3 District 12 offensive player of the year for the Central Bulldogs as well as 1st Team Central Region honors.
Lydia Holtmann, who got the game-winner for the Springfield Catholic squad in the title game this year
Nicole Ortega, who’s 50 yard run past three defenders into the box created the opportunity for Holtmann
Kindra Lierz, who anchored the Glendale Falcons defense from her goalkeeper position while earning Goalkeeper of the Year honors for Class 3 Southwest Region
Miriam Melugin, who started every game in midfield for Kickapoo
Payton DeHart, who scored 12 goals for Nixa, including 5 game-winners
Emma Chilton, who started at outside defender but became a central midfielder for Parkview in their District title run

The team also includes Nikki Bates, Rebecca Burton, Abby Greene, Morgan Henry, Hannah Kofron, Megan Loethen, Taylor Merritt, Kasey Opfer, Jennifer Pittman, Taylor Stamper, Payton DeHart and Kenzie Dunaway.

Coached by Cory Carr, the girls are ranked #7 in Missouri and will begin play Saturday against Futura FC KCFC, the top-ranked team in the state and #5 in Region II. Only one team will advance to the semifinals so Saturday’s game will be critical if they want to advance. WC St Louis Academy is ranked #4 in Missouri and the top-ranked team in Group B, thus the likely semifinal opponent.

Sporting KC Opens Livestrong Park With A Draw

Sporting KC vs Chicago Fire, Livestrong Home Opener, June 9 2011Sporting KC’s sparkling new stadium was more than they could have hoped for, the game, however, didn’t go exactly as planned. Sporting KC and the Chicago Fire played to a 0-0 draw with missed calls and blown opportunities for both teams.

The crowd was standing and cheering long before the match started and they stayed loud throughout. Captain Davy Arnaud said that the atmosphere was incredible.

“We really showed what soccer has become in Kansas City,” Arnaud said. “Hopefully going forward it’s going to stay like that.”

On a warm night, in front of an over-capacity crowd of 19,925 the only man to put the ball in the net was a fan in a cow costume who ran onto the field in the second half.

Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes felt like his team controlled the game early on as Chance Myers and Kei Kamara moved the ball effortlessly up the right side of the field to create opportunities.

“We felt like that right side was going to be a side that we could really expose,” Vermes said.

Sporting KC were the aggressors in the early going and defender Aurelien Collin said Chicago was sitting back, playing not to lose.

“Chicago came here to draw,” Collin said. “They knew that it was the first game and we wanted to come out and get the win, unfortunately we didn’t.”

With the tie, KC moves to 1-6-4 on the year while Chicago notched its league-leading eighth tie of the year to move to 1-4-8.

The tide of the game shifted in the 67th minute when Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen misjudged his rush of a deep pass by the Fire and grabbed the ball outside of the box for a red card. KC was forced to bring in back-up goalie Eric Kronberg and play the rest of the match with only 10 players.

Sporting took a more conservative approach to the game’s final 30 minutes and Vermes said that the crowd was a big factor in helping KC hang on for the draw.

“When you come home, the crowd is like the 12th man,” Vermes said… or in this case, the 11th.

Despite the disadvantage, KC still had opportunities down the stretch. The biggest missed opportunity was out of their control.

In the 85th minute, Sporting midfielder Omar Bravo went up to receive a pass in the box and he was met in midair by a Chicago defender. Bravo came crashing to the turf where he remained for several minutes, there was no foul call and Vermes was irate on the sidelines.

Midfielder Graham Zusi also disagreed with the no-call.

“From my angle it certainly looked like a penalty,” Zusi said. “ But you have to live with it and move on.”

Zusi set the crowd off when he put a shot in the back of the net in the 15th minute but the celebration was short lived as the refs quickly called Bravo offside.

Sporting KC fans will have to wait until next time to see a goal that counts, but for now they can just enjoy one of the elite venues in the MLS.

“It’s perfect for the city,” Collin said. “It’s great for the club. I mean, look around, it’s amazing.”
