The regional voting by area Soccer Coaches is complete and their Spring 2011 Officiating recognition is complete.

Runners Up: Courtney Wendel and Patrick Burns

Courtney Wendel and Patrick Burns were both recognized by MSHSAA this year as well, working the Final 4 in early June. Courtney was part of the first ever All-Women crew at the Final 4 that handled the Class 1 Final won by Catholic. Patrick worked the Class 3 Final between Liberty and Ursuline.

Ryan Smith leaves Sporting

The announcement came Tuesday that Sporting KC midfielder Ryan Smith has left the team due to family reasons.

It has been a rough year for the 24-year-old English midfielder. He appeared in only six MLS games this year after offseason knee surgery kept him out early and a groin strain has kept him on the sidelines recently. His only goal this year came in a 1-1 draw with Colorado.

In a press release, manager Peter Vermes said that things are sometimes difficult for international players.

“With some of the family issues that Ryan has back at home, he felt like this was the best decision for both him and his family, and we support him,” Vermes said.

Smith signed with Sporting KC before the 2010 season, he played in 26 games last year recording three goals and leading the team with seven assists.

The U.S. Men’s National Team put together its best performance in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup Sunday with an impressive 2-0 victory against Jamaica at RFK Stadium to advance to the semifinals.

The U.S. dominated the match and created numerous chances, finally breaking through in the second half when Jermaine Jones’ one-timer from the top of the penalty area found the back on the net. After a red card to Jermaine Taylor, the U.S. used their man advantage to put the game away with an attractive passing sequence the led to a well-composed finish from close range by Clint Dempsey.

USA Under 17 Boys Open With Win, Face Uzbekistan Wednesday

Alejandro GuidoTORREON, Mexico (June 19, 2011) – The U.S. opened the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup with an emphatic 3-0 win against the Czech Republic on Sunday in Torreon, Mexico. Goals from midfielders Alejandro Guido and Esteban Rodriguez, as well as a late strike from substitute forward Alfred Koroma gave the USA a deserved three points in scorching three digit temperatures.

The U.S. currently sits in second place in Group D behind New Zealand on goals scored. The Young All Whites powered to a 4-1 win against Uzbekistan earlier in the evening. The U.S. can secure a berth to the second round with a win against Uzbekistan on Wednesday, June 22. That match, also from Estadio Torreon, kicks off at 3 p.m. local time (4 p.m. CT) live on Galavision and ESPN3, and on tape delay on ESPNU.

Alumbaugh Leads Scott Gallagher Metro To U18 Academy Playoffs

Congratulations to former Springfield SC Technical Director Jeremy Alumbaugh who in his second year has led the St Louis Scott Gallagher Metro U17/18 squad from a 9th place finish in 2010 to 1st Place in 2011 in the Frontier Division of the Central Conference. The boys went from a 2-11-5 record within their Division (4-15-8 overall) to 8-3-3 this year (11-6-4 overall). The boys accomplished the feat by finishing the year on a 2-0-1 run that included a tie against the Gallagher Missouri squad and a pair of wins in Minnesota over Shattuck-St Mary’s and the Minnesota Thunder.

The team advances to the Academy Playoffs & Showcase event in Frisco, TX later this week, June 24-28. 32 teams from across the country will participate in Group play, with each of the 8 Playoff Groups containing 4 teams each.

The top eight finishers at the Development Academy Playoffs qualify to attend Finals Week which will be July 9-16 in Milwaukee, WI. Players and coaches are exposed to an overall event designed according to U.S. Soccer Best Practices both on and off the field. The final matches place seeds 1-4 from each group against one another, matching Seed 1 from Group A against Seed 1 from Group B in each group in the final placement game.

Congrats Jeremy. See you Sunday October 30th when the Cougars visit Missouri State for the final home game of the season for the Bears.

2 game win streak for KC

Make that two in a row for Sporting KC.

KC got its first win at the new Sporting Livestrong Stadium with a 1-0 victory over San Jose.

CJ Sapong scored the game’s only goal off of a Graham Zusi free kick in the 31st minute.

In front of a sell-out crowd, KC notched the third shutout in its past four games and extended its unbeaten streak to five games.

With the win, KC improves to 3-6-4, they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Union on Wednesday.

The U.S. will face Jamaica in the quarterfinals at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, June 19 at 2 p.m. CT. The match can be seen live on FOX Soccer and Univision. FOX Soccer will also have a 30-minute pre-game show beginning at 1:30 p.m. CT

You can also catch the U17 Team in the FIFA U17 World Cup in their opening Group game at 5:00 pm on ESPN2.

As soon as the Gold Cup groups were announced, Jamaica looked a good bet to not only advance into the knockout phases but perhaps qualify for its first final.

It has done nothing to dispel that sentiment while reeling off three straight wins in group play while scoring seven goals and conceding none.
