The Club had a pair of teams qualify for the US Club Soccer Regional playoffs being held in Indianapolis June 28 - July 1st.

The U13 squad finished first in their group, winning 2 and drawing 1 with 5 goals scored, 2 allowed. They won their semifinal game against the Chicago Magic North team (their second win over a Magic team this weekend) and will face off against Chicago Sockers FC White team in the final.

Good luck to the boys. Maybe I’ll get a photo soon!

The U12 squad finished with a draw and two losses in their matches, tying Minnesota’s Super Club Bangu Tsunami while losing to Cincinnati United Premier and Classics FC Premier, while scoring 4 and allowing 8.

US Club Soccer is a non-profit organization committed to the support and development of competitive soccer clubs. It is founded on the belief that soccer clubs, which are in the business of elite player development, need an organization of their own to foster growth, address concerns, and sanction and provide programs with a minimum of rules and restrictions.

US Club Soccer was founded in early 2000 as the National Association of Competitive Soccer Clubs (NACSC) by a group of soccer club coaching directors, representing several well known soccer clubs from different geographical areas. The organization held meetings, launched its first website, and by 2001 had grown to over 140 registered members in 35 states. As a result of this effort, in July, 2001 the organization applied for and was granted membership in the United States Soccer Federation. This provided a seat on the USSF Board, and allowed the organization to sanction soccer clubs, teams, competitions, and events in the same manner as any other USSF member. The number of clubs that registered online grew to over 250 by the end of 2001, and the organization changed its name to US Club Soccer. By the beginning of 2007, US Club Soccer had grown to over 2,300 members in 48 states.

For the 4th consecutive year, the Springfield Sister Cities Association is hosting a cultural and soccer exchange with Tlaquepaque (Ta-lak-ee-pak-ee), Mexico . A group of 17 young men, between the ages of 12 and 15, depart on June 26th. They will play 4 games over a 6 day period against teams that are part of Atlas Football Club, a team that competes in the Mexican Professional League and supports a large Youth Academy, a model that is just beginning to be emulated in the US by Major League Soccer.

Photo slideshow and gallery of photos from the Friendly

The Sister Cities site describes Tlaquepaque as a city of more than 525,000 that is both traditional and cosmopolitan and places its emphasis on art and culture. Known as the “Soul of Mexico,” the city borders Tonala to the south and Guadalajara and Zapopan in the north. The city is located less than an hour from the major metropolitan city of Guadalajara, Mexico, the country’s second-largest city.

This is the second visit by a Springfield team to Tlaquepaque, the first coming in 2006 following the visits to Springfield by the Atlas players in 2005 and then 2007. The home-and-away series is a hotly contested set of games leading to the award of a classic trophy and medals with Springfield winning each of the past two years.

This years players are well aware of the history and look forward to continuing the winning trend. Jackson Patillo, 15 and a member of the Willard Tigers as well as Springfield SC, will be making his first visit beyond US borders. What is he looking forward to the most? “Playing in the stadium that Atlas FC competes in. It will be a fast game, and rough, but we can compete with them. We’ve got a pretty good team as well”

Video from KOLR 10 including interviews with Jackson & Gehrig

The youngest member is Izzy Chappell, who will be a seventh grader at Pershing Middle School this Fall. Asked about his expectations, he was confident. “We’ll win” was his response, which went hand-in-hand with his personal plans. “I want to buy jerseys of teams from Mexico, and a soccer ball for my trophy case”. He’s a speedy forward with good skills and his greatest memory currently is scoring against the KC Wizards goal keeper in costume during half time contests of a game against Missouri State.

There is one young man who will be making his second trip to Tlaquepaque, a 14-year old veteran of international travel. Gehrig Haberstock, from SpringHigh Select SC who will be a sophomore at Waynesville this Fall, is the son of a recently retired Army veteran. Like me, Gehrig was born in Munich Germany but has gained all of his soccer experience in Missouri, his home since 2001. He was one of the youngest on the trip in 2006 and besides the games, the cultural experience still resonates for him.

“We toured the city, seeing their old buildings and plazas. It was pretty neat. We ate a lot of fajitas, more than I ever want to eat again!”

The Sister City relationship between Springfield and Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico was formalized on June 27, 2003 and has included a number of visits besides this soccer event. According to their website, the SSCA sought this relationship with a Spanish-speaking community because of the growth of the Hispanic population in the Ozarks region and for the opportunities for business and cultural development. As these boys can attest, it’s been a great relationship. Bring home the hardware boys!

At its May 31st state board meeting, the Missouri Youth Soccer Association approved a resolution to adopt US Youth Soccer’s guidelines for small sided play for Under-12 and younger teams.

The mandate is effective with the start of the fall, 2008 playing season. Teams, clubs and leagues were asked to submit a written notice to the MYSA State Office by Sunday, June 15th, indicating an intent to take advantage of a one year transition period. The one year transition period affords affected clubs, teams and leagues sufficient preparation time to get in compliance with the mandate.

The most affected teams will most likely be the U9, U10 and U11 age groups for the fall 2009 playing season.

Lake Country Soccer submitted notice that it will use the one year transition period so that LCS has ample time to educate its membership and make all necessary arrangements in terms of equipment and facilities in advance of the fall 2009 playing season.

There are a number of club coaching directors, and coaches in general who championed this change. “The primary objective is to enhance the playing experience of Missouri’s youth with smaller fields, fewer players and more touches on the ball. Ultimately, the growth and development of the game at the grassroots level will benefit the most with this change”, said Kelly R. Ross; Executive Director for Lake Country Soccer.

Kelly also serves on the MYSA State Board as the District Commissioner for the Southern District. The Southern district is geographically bound by I-44 on the north, the Oklahoma state line to the west, the Arkansas state line to the south and as far east as West Plains. There are only six MYSA affiliated clubs or leagues designated to the southern district; Lake Country Soccer, the Ozark Mountain Soccer League, the Rolla Knights Soccer Club, the Rolla Area Soccer League, Springfield Soccer Club and West Plains Soccer Association.

For more information on the small sided mandates, please visit the Missouri Youth Soccer Association web site or visit US Youth Soccer’s web site. Emails may be sent directly to Kelly@lakecountrysoccer.org.
