The USL Men’s Player Showcase is a three-day event and is comprised of multiple 70-minute matches for 90 elite prospects to display their abilities to a number of top clubs around the world. In 2007 USL Men’s Player Showcase drew more than 300 applicants from an elite pool of collegiate and international talent. With numerous players landing professional contracts in Major League Soccer, the USL First Division, the USL Second Division and with international clubs, the USL Men’s Player Showcase has become a critical component of the PDL and the player development structure within USL.

As with previous showcase events, the majority of selected players are drawn from USL’s Premier Development League. “As expected in 2007, the Charleston Battery displayed an overwhelming level of professionalism in hosting the USL Men’s Player Showcase,” said USL Executive Vice President and COO Tim Holt. “Through their run to the U.S. Open Cup Final this season, the Battery displayed their on-field ability. Off the field, Charleston possesses world class facilities and tremendous experience in hosting successful events.”

The 2008 USL Men’s Player Showcase presented by Umbro will bring in the top 90 players in North America that competed amongst the 67 PDL teams from the 2008 season. As the top amateur league in North America, the Premier Development League is committed to providing its players with every opportunity to excel at the professional level.

“Each year the Demize have the opportunity to send PDL players to the combine that we feel have the ability to play at the professional level and it is a great honor for the Demize to be sending five of our players to USL Combine, ” said General Manager, Chris Hanlon. “Omar Shoucair represented the Demize at the 2007 USL Men’s Player Showcase where he was recruited by the USL 1 Carolina Railhawks to compete for a roster spot. Eddie Conde, another member of the 2007 roster, participated in the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL 2) invitational combine.”

Also, attending the combine are the Head Coach of the Demize, Armen Tonianse, and General Manager Chris Hanlon. Tonianse and Hanlon will be representing the Demize and the USL as Staff coaches for this years combine. “Both Chris and I are excited to be attending this years event,” mentioned Tonianse. “We have been on the USL coaching staff and attending the USL combine since its inception in 2006 and each years talent pool gets better. I believe this years event will highlight why the PDL exists and the value it has to those players who aspire to play professionally.”

Springfield Demize Opening night for Springfield’s Professional Development League (PDL) team will be Mother’s Day weekend, and the start of the girls District playoffs. Saturday May 10th they will host the Colorado Rapid’s U23, with Lance Parker (MSU) in goal for the Rapids very likely.

The KC Brass visit twice, the first time May 22nd, just two days after the Class 3 Sectional that is traditionally held at Lake Country Soccer as well. They return two weeks later on June 6th, also the start of the Toyota Cup, being hosted by Lake Country this year. The Rapids U23′s will visit on Saturday June 7th.That should guarantee large crowds!

The final home games in early July feature Heartland Conference rivals St Louis and Des Moines, which will probably feature Drury forward Marco Cherisma. The games are bracketed by a pair of long distance road trips (to Colorado and Ontario). It’s a fairly balanced schedule that offers the St Louis Lions and Des Moines Menace as the final home games.

Springfield Demize At USL Showcase

PDL: Springfield Demize vs Indiana InvadersOmar Shoucair (pictured) along with Springfield Demize owners Chris Hanlon and Armen Tonianse, recently returned from Charleston where they participated in the USL Players Showcase.

Chris Hanlon and Armen Tonianse were invited, for their second straight year, to the USL Men’s Player Showcase. The first ever showcase was held at Ed Racien Sports Center in Tampa, Fl with 192 out 600 of the Countries top PDL and Collegiate players showcasing their talents. One-third of the players that attended the event signed professional contracts soon after with Coach Hanlon having five players and Coach Tonianse having three from their teams move on to play professionally.

This years event will take place in Charlston, SC on Dec. 16th – 18th. After last years event, the USL changed venues and decreased the number of players to maximize the talent pool. The Springfield Demize will be represented by Omar Shoucair (Honorable Mention, PDL Heartland Conference in 2007) with Yanik Joseph (MSU 2008) and Eddie Conde (a late season signee)on the waiting list.

I’ll keep you up-to-date on any announcements that may come out of Omar’s efforts this past week. I’ve also got some information on a Futsal Tournament the Demize are hosting in January that I’ll post in the next day or two. January 18th -20th, the weekend will also include an exhibition match with a pro team.

Jacob “Jake” Harris, A Carolina Railhawk?

Jacob Harris, Carolina Railhawks Tryouts I got word recently that former Missouri State Bear Jacob “Jake” Harris (2005) is having a successful training camp with the Carolina Railhawks of the USL First Division. The photo is by Jarrett Campbell, who has a set from March 15th that includes this shot of Jake.

The Railhawks are a new team and played their first game ever last night, an exhibition match against the Wake Forest men’s team. If Jake is ultimately signed by the Railhawks, who are playing him at outside defense, the closest he’ll come to Springfield will be Thursday September 6th when Carolina visits the Minnesota Thunder.

I haven’t been able to find any info, and possible stats, on tonights game outside of the announcement on the TriSoccerFan site, a soccer blog I’ve pointed too several times in the past. If anyone has more information, please share!

Update – Triangle Soccer Fanatic has more information on the competition for roster spots as well as an update on the game, a 3-1 loss to Wake Forest, an NCAA Final Four participant this year. Over 800 showed up for a friendly!

Glendora Storm

Some more news from the PDL on the fate of the Springfield Storm.

TAMPA, FL – It was announced today that the new Los Angeles PDL franchise based in Glendora will retain the original nickname Storm.

Ownership, in part, of the Springfield Storm was acquired by the Glendora FC youth club during the offseason with previous co-owner Chris Hanlon retaining his stake in the team. The team was relocated to the Northeast region of the Los Angeles with Chris Hanlon joining the Glendora FC staff.

The Glendora FC youth club, headed by Josh Hodges, is a member of the Coast Soccer League, which recently joined the USL Super Y-League and will serve as the Pacific Southern California Division.

When I look at the USL/PDL environment, with the defending champion Des Moines Menace as an excellent regional example, adding a PDL team as part of a larger youth soccer community offers an additional path and opportunity for the players within the soccer club as well as a built-in marketing arm. Thus the opportunity looks like a good one. Congratulation to Coach Hanlon and his partners. I hear the weather is pretty nice in that part of the country Chris :)
