6th Annual Southwest All-Star Game Tonight!

Join us for tonight’s High School All-Star game, being hosted at Springfield Catholic High School for the first time. The game features the best graduating high school seniors in this region, as chosen by Steve Ole Olson of SGFsoccer.com, who covered over 50 games this Spring season, and Eric Sorlie of Springfield SC. Nominations were sought from the coaches of all of the teams from the three classes that play soccer in the Southwest Missouri region.

As part of the game activities this evening, we will be recognizing the Springfield Catholic girls team, along with Head Coach Ben Timson and assistant Meredith White. The Lady Irish won the State Soccer Title in Class 1 on June 5th, defeating Trinity Catholic from St Louis. The title is the first ever in soccer for any team in Southwest Missouri.

All-Stars Player Registration And Game Information

2006 All-Stars from Joplin and Neosho

2006 All-Stars from Joplin and Neosho

Folks, I have to apologize, I have been slow to get some of the game details taken care of. It’s a volunteer gig, not my real job so please don’t take it personally if you haven’t received information in as timely a fashion as you would expect or hope.

That being said, let’s get this party started.

First things first – I need your help ensuring that every player that has been invited is pointed to the information in this post. Please share this with your teammate, your son or daughter or a player on your favorite team to ensure they have the opportunity to participate and be recognized for their accomplishments.

What: Southwest All-Stars Game – one week away!
When: Tuesday, June 22, 2010
6:00 pm – Girls Game
7:45 pm – Recognition of State Champion Springfield Catholic Girls and Coach Ben Timson
8:00 pm – Boys Game
Where: Springfield Catholic High School (Map below)
2340 S Eastgate Avenue
Springfield, MO 65809

2010_Player_Invitation

Tickets are sold at the gate and are $5 apiece. Children 6 and under are free. There are no refunds available. In the case of severe weather we will attempt to reschedule the game for a day later in the week.

Ticket sales will be handled as you drive into the entrance to Catholic HS, on Eastgate.

There is Seating available in stands that will be located along the field as well as on the roadway along side the field. There is limited grass seating area between those two areas that allow blankets but due to the expected attendance, we ask that you DO NOT bring lawn chairs.

Catholic High School will be providing Concessions which will include beverages, candy and probably some grilled hot dogs and hamburgers.

There is a strong likelihood that Mediacom will be part of this years game as well, for the first time since 2006. Both games will be covered and shown on a tape-delayed basis. DVD’s of the game will also be available for resale.

Players should arrive 90 minutes early so that they can be assigned to a team, receive their souvenir jersey t-shirt and warm up with their team. Each player is responsible for bringing water/Gatorade/Powerade for their personal consumption as well as white socks, MSHSAA approved shin-guards and black shorts.

There is a registration form that each player needs to complete. It includes a waiver of liability – this event is put on as a voluntary basis and certified referees and trainers will be provided but there is a risk of injury from playing in any athletic event. We ask the players to recognize that risk and absolve the organizers from liability.

We also ask them to update us on their current Honors and Recognition so that we may share that with the attendees throughout the game.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Steve “Ole” Olson via the contact form on this site.

Congratulations To Aiken, Stewart and Donson

The High School basketball All-Star game was played Saturday. The teams are split between City schools and Area schools. There were three Southwest Soccer All-Stars who also played in the basketball event.

Chris Aiken, Greenwood Blue Jays, played for the City team which won 97-95 after three OT’s. Doesn’t look like Chris scored in the game but then again, someone has to pass the ball to Trey Starks of Hillcrest who scored 40.

Shelby Stewart, Parkview Vikings, played on the winning City team while scoring 11 points.

Najee Donson, Logan-Rogersville Wildcats, played for the Area team and scoreed 3 points in the 56-51 loss.

I’ll have information packets and a registration form sorted out Monday for the players in this years game. I apologize for the delay, this is still volunteer gig and I’ve been trying to pay some bills with client work. If you haven’t contacted me, or added yourself to the Facebook event, please send me an email at ole@SGFsoccer.com Thanks, see you in a week!

Southwest Soccer All-Stars Rock The House

Boys Yellow All-Stars – 7
Boys Red All-Stars – 6
13 goals in 80 minutes! The boys put on a scoring clinic – in particular, Ryan Moses (SLU) who was slow to get on the board. Yet, once he got going by foregoing his initial defensive role, he dumped in four of the Yellow All-Star’s seven goals.

The Red All-Stars started the scoring in the 15th minute as Glendale’s Ian Newport (SLU) slipped one past Kickapoo’s All-State keeper Chris Tombridge (Northwestern). Chris’ former teammate, Kickapoo’s Lane Chapman (NEO), also a member of the local PDL Demize, got the equalizer in the 20th minute.

The scoring got started again, in the 31st minute, as Glendale’s Graham Basecke (Indiana) got free in the area and put the Reds up 2-1. Four minutes later Moses started his spree and put in the equalizer. The first half ended in a flurry of chances and goals. A minute later, the Reds were up one on a Devon Newport (SLU) goal. New Covenant’s Brett Murray (Drury) put the Reds up by two in the 42nd minute, on an assist from Glendale’s Ryan Squires (Wm Jewell). However, the first half would end with the Yellow trailing by one as Parkview’s Tim Griffin (Illinois Weslyan) put the final goal of the half away in the 45th minute. The Reds led 4-3 at the break.

Where the first half saw the teams looking for any weaknesses in each other for the first 15 minutes they wasted no time and just started putting up some points immediately in the second. Neosho’s Jordan Blevin started things off in the fourth minute putting the Reds up by two. His goal was quickly matched as Moses found the back of the net in the sixth. 5-4 Reds. Parkview’s Matt Medley (Loras College) found Moses just outside the box in the 15th minute to knot the game at 5 as Moses was able to put his hat-trick goal into the side netting. Griffin put the Yellow All-Stars up one in the 22nd minute. Six minutes later Moses found a way to get his fourth goal of the evening on an assist from Kickapoo’s Tyler Bennett (Oglethorpe Univ), putting the Yellows up 7-5. The scoring finished in the 35th minute on a Devon Newport goal, assisted by Murray.

There were a lot of smiles and laughter, amongst the guys, the two things we sometimes miss in the regular season. The boys played a game that everyone in attendance should be able to look back on with fond memories. These guys represented Southwest Missouri high school soccer in fine fashion.

Girls Red All-Stars – 6
Girls Yellow All-Stars – 1
The girls took to the field at 8PM. The sun was down and it was a pleasant evening for a game. Lebanon’s Janel Glidden (MSU-West Plains, VB) got things started in the 9th minute as she lofted a shot over Kickapoo’s Shannon Johnson’s (Central Missouri) outstretched hands. Monett’s Bianca Holloway (Maryville) put the Reds up 2-0 in the 19th minute.

The next twenty minutes of play saw several chance by each team being thwarted by some smart keeper play. Neosho’s Ashley Bartkoski (GK & co-POY in her district) and Johnson each came up big to the keep the game close for the half.

The first half would end with the Yellow All-Stars getting a PK goal from Kickapoo’s Abby Anderson (Central Methodist) as a Red defender was called for a handball in the 18. The half would end with the Red’s up 2-1.

The second half started much the same as the first, with Waynesville’s Erica Combs (Illinois) assisting Monett’s Bianca Holloway (Maryville) in the 50th minute to put the Reds up 3-1.

Glendale’s Jeni Frewin (KU) broke free on a run in the 65th minute for the Red’s fourth goal.

The Red’s next goal was scored when Lebanon’s Hanna Winkel (Virginia Wesleyan) took the ball off the foot of a yellow player 25 yards from goal. Winkel dribbled the ball past the last defender and took on Bolivar’s keeper Sara Scott (OTC) where she calmly slid the ball to the side netting for her team’s fifth goal in the 67th minute.

Camdenton’s Stephanie Kervan (Wm. Woods, Offensive POY, All-State) would end the scoring in the 77th minute as she took a pass from Winkel and found the back of the net.

The girls put on a nice game with lots of teamwork. Their passing and movement off the ball was something that all their coaches would be happy to see. Again, as in the boy’s game, there were lots of smiles and laughter. What a great way to end their high school playing days. The girls approached the game as a low-pressure event and appeared to enjoy their evening.
