Southwest Missouri Soccer Officials Recognition Program

high school refereesHigh School Soccer Coaches in Southwest Missouri have initiated a recognition program for Referees that will culminate in the naming of the Soccer Referee of the Year at the end of the month. Here is background on the program, initiated by Nick Schmitt, West Plains Zizzers:

Officials are an integral part of high school soccer. Many times, officials go unnoticed when they do a good job. As of early January, there were 76 Soccer Officials from the Southwest Missouri area registered as MSHSAA Officials. (There are some from other areas that work games in Southwest Missouri, but I have not included those Officials in this process.) The MSHSAA recognizes 1 Soccer Official for Boys Soccer and 1 Soccer Official for Girls Soccer each year as Official of the Year from across the state. There are more than 2 Soccer Officials worthy of recognition for their time and effort.

The Process: At the end of each season, Officials working District Games in Boys Class 1 Districts 9 & 10, Class 2 Districts 9&10, Class 3 Districts 10, 11, & 12 (Girls will be Class 1 11 & 12 Districts, Class 2 District 11, Class 3 Districts 10, 11, & 12) plus other Officials that are nominated will be eligible for the All-Southwest Missouri Officiating Crew. That list has been narrowed to the following Top 15 List and a list of six finalists from whom the Official of the Year will be named at the end of the month.

How Was Your Weekend?

I ask that question as a prelude to sharing Andy Wilkinson’s weekend with you from last week. As you can see in the photos, he covered a lot of bases. He started his road trip with a drive from Joplin up to Kansas City to enjoy the KC Wizards game against the LA Galaxy on Saturday. From there he headed to St Louis where he participated in the St Louis Athletica game against the FC Gold Pride. The Women’s Professional Soccer match was held at the A-B Soccer Complex, was broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel and included Andy as AR2.

Congrats to one of our region’s up-and-coming referee’s, as Andy is actively pursuing his National license. Thanks for the photos Andy. Oh, and to address any questions… That’s Jack Jewsbury in the first, Beckham in the second, Andy’s on the far left in the third (not the little girl, the ref!) and that’s Hope Solo bending over in front of Andy as he check’s the nets prior to the start of the game. Apparently his buddies were a bit enamored of Hope and so most of his photos are of the US goalkeeper!

Springfield Represents At Region 2 – The Arbiter’s

Springfield Referees

Congratulations to the crew from Springfield who were chosen to represent and earned their way to Sioux Falls, SD this past week. This team was part of the the fun, and success, of playing and working at the highest levels.

Back Row – Patrick Burns and Ryan Cooksey
Front Row – Alysan Burgbacher, Mark Lassman-Eul, Andy Wilkinson and Jessica McCutcheon

Update – Patrick, Ryan, and Andy all worked semi finals on Tuesdays. Only one missouri referee got a final due to so many teams from missouri being in the finals.

It was the first trip to Regionals for Alysan, a high school senior-to-be at New Covenant where she will play on the boys team this season, along with Jessica, who will be a sophomore at Rogers State (OK). The group was also joined by Jeff Kohlmeyer and Kelly Ross who worked as an assigner and a mentor, respectively.
