Catholic Fightin’ Irish – 2
Cherokee Indians – 1
The Irish took the lead late in the first half this evening when Hannah Kelly Devlin was sent in on goal on the left side. Finding some space down the wing, she was able to get off her shot as she entered the box after turning her defender, with the shot going in off the fingertips of the goal keeper. The Irish got a second goal midway through the second half when Nicole Ortega picked up a ball outside the box and got past a defender before burying her shot. The Indians fought back and when the Irish sweeper slipped on the wet surface Maddie Hotckins pounced on the ball and broke into the box, slipping her shot to the left upright.

The 92 girls outscored their opponents in bracket play 12-2 and coasted to the finals on a team high. They met SSC in the finals and kicked off the game with a goal in the first 40 seconds. Heading into the second half with the lead, the ladies fell victim to a lapse in marking and SSC capitalized on the mistakes. The final ended, 4-1 in SSC’s favor. Play by play details to come later this week….
The 2000 girls were the belle of the ball for this tournament. They came out of a tough bracket with the wild card and headed to the semi’s. Battling the returning champions from last year, the girls won the semifinal with some strong play in the second half. The girls faced off against a fellow A bracket team and were down 2-0 at half. With a renewed fight and a trio of goals from Brinnae Cooper, the 2000 girls captured their first tournament championship!

Springfield SC – 1
St Louis Scott Gallagher Netherlands – 0
Lydia Holtmann scores for SSC as they capture the U14 title
In the U13 Girls Division, Springfield SC went 2-2, with wins over RP Elite and KC Select, finishing 3rd in the group.
In the U14 Girls Division, Pulaski United FC went 0-2-1, getting a tie against KC National in their first tournament outing as a team. SSC had two teams competing in this bracket with the 2nd group finishing 0-1-2 on the weekend, with ties against MO Elite FC and KC Select. MO Elite FC finished 0-2-1
In the U16 Girls division, Springfield SC went 1-1-2 with the win coming against the new Pulaski County United team that was competing for the first time. The PUFC girls finished 0-3-1 with their tie coming against Xtreme16.

Springfield SC - 4
Missouri Elite FC – 1
Elite opened the game with a 1st minute goal by Kelsey Bartell, who ran onto a through ball from Emelie Schrier and shot, grabbed the rebound and slipped the ball past the defense, to give the ladies in blue an early lead they held to halftime. SSC got a very early goal in the 2nd half by Shelby Stewart to tie the game. Stewart went on to get two more goals and help lead SSC to the High School Girls title. Shelby Hatz also scored for SSC.
Mamba’s went 1-2 on the weekend, beating Carrera 4-1 while losing to Lady Ajax 1-2 and to SSC by a score of 0-4 with Shelby Stewart and Shelby Hatz once again scoring.
MO Elite FC went 2-0-1 to reach the finals, defeating Bayern Munich and FC St Louis Atletico while tying Sedalia Select.
The Total Demize high school girls won the Silver Division, winning all 4 games without giving up a goal. Two new teams in the area, FC Springfield and the Lake Country Academy girls, competed in the Silver Division. FC Springfield went 1-2-1, winning 5-1 in the match against LCS who went 0-3-1 this weekend, with the tie coming against the Northwest Arkansas Lightning.More photos and details Monday. Time for me to decompress from the weekend and 12 games covered!
The 25th Annual Fall Classic Tournament, with new name sponsor Incredible Pizza, opens Saturday October 17th. The event hosts Club teams from the 4 State area and age groups from U9 to High School for Girls while the Boys are limited to U9 up to U14 during the Boys High School season.
Tournament information can be found on the Lake Country Soccer website. There is also a special offer for registered tournament teams that gets them discounts at Incredible Pizza, a pretty good idea I’d say.
I plan on attending several games during the weekend. If you have a team that is participating in the tournament, contact me and let me know more about your team and their schedule. I can’t cover a game I don’t know about!
Over the weekend of September 12-13 in Bentonville, Arkansas the Springfield Soccer Club sent six teams to the Clorox Cup hosted by the Northwest Arkansas Lightning Soccer Club. Held at Sugar Creek Park and Memorial Park the tournament annually brings in competition from Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Arkansas.
While it is still early in the 2009-10 season the results on the field speak for themselves. The SSC 99/00 Boys captured the U10 Boys Division in convincing fashion by winning the Final 5-1 over Ft. Smith Express from Arkansas. Not to be outdone by their younger counterparts the SSC 96/97 II Boys brought home the U13 Boys Silver Division Championship in their first tournament as a team.
Perhaps the most dramatic Championship brought home over the weekend was the Under 14 Girls. The SSC 95/96 II Girls played NWAL Black in the Final and quickly found themselves down 3-0. After finding a goal right before the conclusion of the first half, they found two more goals against the host club to finish the game 3-3 at the end of regulation. Keeping the momentum on their side the girls quickly found the game winner only two minutes into the golden goal overtime period for a remarkable 4-3 victory. “It was an exciting game, full of ups and downs for the team. We had a good weekend of play and showed our depth as we had many players contribute when it was their time to step up. I couldn’t be prouder of the effort they showed today in the Final.” said Bryan Murray Head Coach.
Rounding out the weekend the SSC 98/99 Red Girls took home 2nd Place in the U11 Girls Division where they finished with a record
of 3-1 in group play.
All teams in the Springfield Soccer Club will now turn their attention to league play both here in Springfield and in Kansas City for the next couple of weeks before tournament play will resume again. Upcoming tournaments for the club include trips to: Kansas City, Tulsa, St. Louis, Collinsville, IL, Memphis, TN and Springfield. Visit the club website www.springfieldsportsclub.com for information.
I see some light at the end of the tunnel and feel like I’ve got the high school beat under control. I’ve uploaded schedules for about half of the teams, I’ve covered games featuring over 20 different teams in the region since Labor Day (with hundreds of photos and dozens of videos) I’m behind on uploading photos to the commercial site, where you can purchase photos and related items featuring your favorite players but I’ll keep you updated. There are plenty of pictures from last year *winks*
Before I dig into this week’s calendar, a look back. A parent/team that’s been very innovative is Randy Bailey at Springfield Catholic who with a relatively inexpensive Sony camcorder (less than $400) is generating hundreds of hits on the short video clips he is posting from the Catholic games. The money shot is always the goal and he’s got all 3 Catholic goals from Saturday’s game against Greenwood. Check them out on his YouTube channel.
Still early in the High School season but there look to be some interesting matchups this week. I’m trying to see some teams still so I won’t necessarily be at these games but local fans might want to consider them
Tuesday – Carthage vs Ozark as the teams that fought in the Christian County Tournament Final get a rematch 10 days later, this time on Carthage’s grass pitch
Thursday – Carthage @ Catholic offers Catholic a chance at a strong Class3 team. They lost to Waynesville in their first game, how will this one turn out? Kickapoo @ Ozark will offer a good look at a pair of District 11 teams in an early fight that has seeding implications and finally, Glendale hosts Waynesville who as noted earlier beat Catholic. Can they come to Springfield and knock off another local power?
Weekend Tournaments including Bolivar Liberators, Sedalia Sacred Heart and we have some out-of-town visitors locally with Jackson and Cape Central visiting to play Glendale and Parkview in a set of Friday/Saturday tilts.
The U20 World Cup opens this week in Egypt. The US is paired with Germany, Cameroon and the Korean Republic in Group C. The tournament opens on Thursday when the hosts Egypt face off against Trinidad & Tobago. The first game for the US comes on Saturday September 26th at 9:00 am vs Germany. The group stages include the following games:
Date Opponent Kickoff (CT)
Sept. 26 vs. Germany 9 am (ESPN Classic, ESPN360.com, Galavision)
Sept. 29 vs. Cameroon 11:45 am (ESPN2, Galavision)
Oct. 2 vs. Korea Republic 11:45 am (ESPN2, Galavision)
I’ve updated my calendar to reflect the information above and will keep it up-to-date as the tournament progresses.
The roster is a mix of MLS, College and foreign-based players. If you recall the last U20 tournament, held in Canada in 2007, when Altidore and Adu smoked their peers in some fantastic games, then you know we’ll see some future stars and a few that will go bust. I for one am looking forward to it!
The Missouri State Lady Bears open Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend when they host the Northern Iowa Panthers on Sunday at 2:00 pm. The next time you’ll see them is 3 weeks later so get out while the weather is still good.
The Missouri State men are on the road this weekend, in Dallas for the Southern Methodist tournament. They’ll play Houston Baptist on Friday and SMU on Sunday.
The Drury Panthers are on the road, with Conference games in Rolla against the Missouri S&T Miners on Friday and in St Louis against Maryville University on Sunday.
Missouri Southern travels to Truman State on Thursday, another tough MIAA road game but will welcome the opportunity to play at home again on Saturday against Missouri Western. The Southwest Baptist Bearcats are also traveling, for games against Emporia State and Washburn.
Before leaving, I want to send a shout out to the Pink Panthers, a U13 girls team from the Carl Junction area. They sent me a note pointing to their website and the games they played locally this past weekend. A nice site, using my favorite WordPress website software and including some great photography. The photo is from the site, and the game against the Lake Country Soccer Academy team.
The Waynesville Daily Guide got out to visit with the newest club soccer program in Southwest Missouri. Pulaski United FC recently held tryouts and have established their Fall goals.
“To have 120 try out, we’d call that a success,” said PUFC vice-president David Lowe. “It’s a milestone, especially since we just officially started the club in January.”
The club has enough players now for three boys teams (U10, U12 and U14) and two girls teams (U14 and U16) in the fall season.
Lowe says that four of the teams will compete in the Lake Country Soccer League in Springfield. The girls U16 squad will play in the Central Missouri Soccer League in Jefferson City.
More information on the club can be found on their website.
