Kickapoo Chiefs Defeat Glendale Falcons

kickapoo-chiefs-by-heeren-2011In a game typical of this local derby, emotions ran high and it wasn’t until the second half before a soccer game reared it’s head. With both squads affected by injuries to key players, it would fall to strong individual efforts to create goals this evening.

The first goal came as Hunter Durham fought off a challenge for a head ball and pushed hard into the box where he was able to reach the endline and turn towards the box. His simple square ball towards the penalty spot was one-timed into the net by Connor Heeren, ably filling the central midfield role normally handled by Josh McCutcheon. Heeren’s play this evening, providing a reliable alternative for his teammates, was a highlight for me.

Durham was later rewarded for his hard work tonight when he buried Aaron Strunk’s square ball in the 63rd after Glendale had tied the game. Strunk began his run with a quick turn outside the box, headed for the endline and then to the goal. Durham timed his run well and reached the ball just before Wolfram, Glendale’s keeper, was able to kick it out. Both Kickapoo goals can be seen in the video’s below.

Glendale’s goal was scored by John Chalendar as he was the recipient of Yamille Campo’s hard work, who made an overlapping run that took him down the right side. His cross was deflected to the far side where Chalendar was able to shoot into an unguarded net.

Joplin Athletic Boosters Lose Source of Income

From the Joplin Globe – JHS Athletic Boosters lose sources of income in tornado

When the roof of Kaminsky Gymnasium collapsed during the tornado that struck Joplin on May 22, the Joplin High School Athletic Boosters lost tens of thousands of dollars of equipment that had been donated to the athletic department in recent years.

Because all of the athletic facilities at the high school were destroyed — baseball, softball and soccer fields and scoreboards along with tennis courts — any solution would require new sites and possibly fewer home games, McCreary said.

The boys’ soccer team will practice at Missouri Southern and play its home games at the Joplin Athletic Complex, said head coach Ed Miller. The soccer camp held last week attracted 17 players.

“I don’t know if they don’t know about it or if they’re not coming back or what,” Miller said. “I don’t know what the story is. I’m hoping to have more than 17 players.”

The team is using soccer balls and uniforms that were donated by people in the St. Louis area, he said. Another soccer camp is scheduled for the week of July 25.

Harrison Goblins Win Arkansas 6A Final

2011 State Champs 5A - Harrison Goblins

2011 State Champs 5A - Harrison Goblins

UPDATED – From AR.Preps.com – Frequent and intense storms postponed three of the four high school soccer state championship games scheduled for Friday. The only title game that was completed was the Class 4A girls final between Pulaski Academy and Valley View, which was delayed twice by lightning before Pulaski Academy won 2-1 in overtime. The second game of the day, the Class 4A boys championship between De Queen and Conway St. Joseph, began more than an hour past its scheduled start time of 4 p.m. With the score tied 0-0 and exactly 28 minutes remaining in the second half, the teams were called off the field because of lightning.

The Arkansas State Soccer Finals begin today in Fayetteville on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

The Harrison Goblins, a Group Winner at the Ozark Tigers tournament in April, will play Little Rock Christian today in the 5A Girls Title game. In addition, two competitors in the Lady Zizzer Classic, Valley View and Mountain Home, have reached the 4A and 6A Finals respectively. Good luck to our neighbors!

AJ Cochran, CBC Cadets, Named Missouri Gatorade POY

AJ Cochran, Scott Gallagher MO (CBC Cadets, 2011)

AJ Cochran, Scott Gallagher MO (CBC Cadets, 2011)

CHICAGO (February 23, 2011) — In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Alec Cochran of Christian Brothers College High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade Missouri Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Cochran is the second Gatorade Missouri Boys Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from Christian Brothers College High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Cochran as Missouri’s best high school boys soccer player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced in May, Cochran joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Alexi Lalas (1987-88, Cranbrook HS, Mich.), Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo HS, Mich.), Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Kevin Garnett (1992-93, Maudlin HS, S.C.), Tony Meola (1986-87, Kearney HS, N.J.) and Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.).

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior defender anchored a defense that posted 14 shutouts this past season, leading the Cadets (20-8-2) to the Round of 16 at the Class 3 state tournament. An All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Cochran is a member of the U.S. Soccer Under-18 Men’s National Team Player Pool. He was the Missouri High School Soccer Coaches Association Class 3 Defensive Player of the Year and a two-time St. Louis Post-Dispatch All-Metro selection.
