GK Gage Scurlock celebrates a Rolla goal with Captain Nate Kramme

It was a big weekend of soccer for the Carthage Tigers and Rolla Bulldogs. Close to home the #5 state-ranked Tigers came to Springfield and knocked off a top Class 3 program by defeating Glendale 1-0 in penalty kicks on Thursday, followed closely by their Parkview Tournament Championship that concluded with a 2-0 victory over Springfield Catholic. That’s some pretty good soccer and points to the Tigers being one of the top programs in the region, regardless of class.

Initial Coaches Poll

For the #3 state-ranked Bulldogs, it was a tournament championship in St Louis at the Parkway West Tournament. They opened play on Friday against the host Parkway West, ranked #2 in Class 2 in the first poll of the season, and came away with a 3-1 victory powered by two set piece goals, a towering header from their leading scorer Aaron Froehlich bracketed by a pair of goals from senior Austin Park. His first came on a header he ran onto on the edge of the six yard box from a second chance on a corner kick, his brace completed when he wove through three defenders as he dribbled into the box from the right and buried his shot past the keeper.

They followed with a pair of wins on Saturday against Parkway North (4-0) and Parkway South (5-2) that culminated in the Tourney title when West got past Francis Howell, ranked 4th in the current St Louis rankings.

Brett Wubbena Reaches 100 Wins

Asst Coach Jordan Burns with Head Coach Brett Wubbena following Lebanon Tourney win, 2012

Congratulations to Head Coach Brett Wubbena of the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats. A 2-1 win on Wednesday against the Republic Tigers earned him his 100th career win at the school where he’s been the only Coach for the teams that began play in the Fall of 2008 with the Boys.

The win Wednesday against Republic came 10 months after the Tigers defeated the Wildcats 1-0 in the the District title game, ending Logan-Rogersville run as Champions while earning Republic their first soccer District title. While still Central Ozark Conference foes, the teams are now in different classes.

Wubbena’s girls record coming into the season stood at 51-44-2 (now 52-45-2). The team moved down to Class 1 this season, competing in District 12 with Catholic, Greenwood, McAuley and Monett. They spent their first four seasons in Class 2, including their first in 2009 which is the first year of 3 classes for Girls soccer. The team won the District 12 title in 2011, before falling to Harrisonville 0-3 in the Sectional match. That team was led by Stevie Heidzig, a 2nd Team All-State player in 2011 as a senior, who had moved to L-R from Arizona as a sophomore.

His boys record after last Fall’s fifth season is 48-69-0. Always a Class 2 squad, the team has seen Bolivar win District titles every season except last when Willard won the newly reconstituted District 12, defeating the second seeded Wildcats 3-1.

Last Fall, Senior Joshua Nixon was named to the All-State Academic soccer team, while sophomore Tucker Brown was awarded All-State Honorable Mention. Nixon is the first Rogersville student to receive the all-academic award, with this being the first year the association has recognized a state academic team. The South County Mail has more on the awards.

The team has a Facebook Page for those who would like to follow their on-going exploits. Feel free to reach out to Coach Wubbena and congratulate him on his milestone. After they post this story on the Page 🙂

Tawny Stowell Signs with Southwestern Christian

Logan-Rogersville’s Tawny Stowell signed her National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Okla., recently. The South County Mail offers a nice story on the decision and opportunity the senior has to look forward too.

The four-year starter has been a part of 35 wins with the Lady Wildcats, including back-to-back winning seasons. She’s pictured above on the right (#22) after scoring against Marshfield in 2011.

Rogersville head coach Brett Wubbena was excited to see his player have the opportunity to continue her career, but, he said, “it’ll be hard to see her go. We’ve had her since she was a freshman, and she’s gotten better every year. (This is) well deserved,” Wubbena said.

Perhaps the biggest of those 35 wins was a 1-0 victory over last year’s Class 1 state champions Springfield Catholic, in which Stowell scored the winning goal. If not the biggest, it’s certainly the most memorable of Stowell’s career in Wubbena’s mind. Read more about Tawny’s adventures
