The game will take place at the Stanley H. Durwood Stadium on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, which is located at the intersection of Cherry Street and East 51st Street.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the United States, having started in 1914 as the National Challenge Cup. Today, the competition involves teams from all levels of the American soccer pyramid, from semi-pro sides in the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) to teams in Major League Soccer.
The Kansas City Wizards’ 2009 run in the cup was cut short in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 away loss to Seattle Sounders FC. The team suffered a similar fate in 2008, falling 6-5 in a penalty kick shootout to the then-USL1 Seattle Sounders in the quarterfinals.

The Wizards have won the U.S. Open Cup once, defeating the Chicago Fire 1-0 in 2004 at Arrowhead Stadium off an overtime goal from Russian forward Igor Simutenkov.

In the event of a tie the match will go to two 15-minute overtime periods. If the match remains tied after overtime, penalty kicks will be used to determine a winner. The winner of this game will advance in the U.S. Open Cup qualification process to play the winner of a three-team pool that includes the New England Revolution, New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union at a date to be determined in May. The winner of that game will then enter into the round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup.

Wizards season ticket holders and UMKC students, staff and faculty will be able to purchase tickets for $10, and tickets will be available to the general public for $15 each. Tickets will go on sale this Friday morning at 10 a.m. CT, and can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com/opencup or by calling the Wizards at (913) 387-3413.

Stanley H. Durwood Stadium has approximately 1,000 stadium and bleacher seats, so fans are encouraged to buy early to make sure they get the best seats available. Standing-room only/grass berm seats will also be made available after all of the stadium and bleacher seats are sold.

Parking for the event will be available in the garage located on Cherry Street, right across from the stadium. Parking is free, and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

I sent out a couple of tweets from Coach Jon Leamy when he attended an indoor adult men’s tournament in St Louis recently that included a team made up of Missouri State Bear’s men’s soccer alumni. Well, check out the latest note from Coach Leamy:

It is with both a great deal of pride and pleasure that I am announcing that a generous gift has been made to our Missouri State University Soccer Program. The group of MSU Soccer Alums that won the 16 team Nike College Indoor Soccer Classic (February 13 & 14) in St. Louis made a decision to donate the first place prize money to the MSU Soccer Program! By winning the championship they were presented with $1000. On behalf of Missouri State University and our soccer program we are forever grateful for this extremely kind gesture. Many special thanks to OUR Alumni players Jarod Bertrand, Steve Mayes, Mike Williams, Brad Jordan, Kyle Hopson, Nick Pollard, Brett Williams, Justin Alford, Matt Caution, Doug Lascody, Dan Watson, and Andy Hately for the gift. Boys you are absolutely the best!

The boys are front row left to right: Doug Lascody, Matt Caution, Andy Hately, Kyle Hopson, Justin Alford
Back row left to right: Jarod Bertrand, Dan Watson, Nick Pollard, Mike Williams, Brad Jordan, Steve Mayes

By the way, if you’re a Bear’s fan, consider following them on Facebook as well.

If you are exploring Twitter or considering it, add @CoachJonLeamy and @SGFsoccer. Another sign that the regular season is just around the corner was Wednesday night’s alumni game for the Parkview Vikings. The friendly match between the alumni and the current boys team players that are in town prior to the start of the season was held at the YMCA facilities on Republic Road. There was a wide range of players that turned out, with graduates as recent as May and the oldest from the early 90′s I believe. Oh, and as I told the attendees, I was disappointed to not see Katie Brooks (’05, Wm Jewell ’09) out kicking it around with them, I wonder if they were concerned about keeping up

I’ve numbered the players from left to right, back to front. I’ll fill in what I’m confident of, add yourself and your graduation year if you’d like.

Back: 1, Darren Shaw ’09, 3, Mike Lampe, 5, 6, 7, 8, Matt Stufflebeam ’00, 10
Middle: Joseph Florez ’03, 12, Will Griffin ’07, 14, Morgan Holt ’09, Matt Medley ’09, 17, Zach ’07
Front: 19, Tim Griffin ’09, 21, Tom Marlow ’07, Matt Beckett ’08

If your high school holds an alumni game, feel free to send me an update and a photo so we can catch up on the

Time for another update from New Zealand where for the second straight season Springfield is well represented. Here’s how the Chairman of the Upper Hutt City Soccer program describes it in their recent newsletter:

As many of you will know, we have another American import in our ranks this year, Patrick Carver, who has followed in the footsteps of Andy Cooper and Brian Pasierb last year in being a great ambassador for his country, and a great addition on the field for our men’s first team. One of Patricks strengths is his ability to relate to our juniors, and his coaching skills and encouragement have certainly helped the 14th grade team I coach punch above their weight this season. Many of our juniors will get the chance to learn from Patrick in the upcoming school holiday program, where he will be running a number of sessions with our first team captain Andy Le Prue. Andy is a very classy player, and between them they will ensure the holiday program is a great one for the kids to be involved in. If you haven’t registered your kids yet, please contact our junior club captain John Blaikie.

Another exciting initiative is taking place next week with the arrival of Mike Seabolt, our contact in America who has facilitated the player imports that have occurred over the past 2 years. Mike will also be getting involved with our juniors and seniors while he is here, running coaching sessions and scouting for talent, and hopefully this relationship will provide opportunities for some of our kids to secure football scholarships into the USA in the future.

And as Patrick noted in his most recent email – We are doing well, just moved in to 3rd place on the table after a hard fought win against Naenae on Saturday. Came from behind three times to win the game 4-3. I had a goal, played most of the game. We have some tough games coming up but with a little luck, we could definitely win the league and get promoted to the top level of pro soccer in New Zealand.

I’ve converted the latest newsletter into a PDF so that you can get caught up with our two local boys and their efforts at Upper Hutt, just download The Harcourt Herald to view Patrick’s comments on his stay so far as well as Seabolt’s comments which include feedback on the recently concluded Confederations Cup (the good and the bad including some coaching advice for Bradley & Co) and the upcoming MSU season. You should also check out the Upper Hutt website and the September 2008 newsletter that includes some pictures of Andy Cooper and Brian Pasierb along with Pasierb’s bio.
