Soccer on TV, Week 1

It’s that time again. I’m going to use the EPL calendar to title this new weekly TV Broadcast post, for a number of reasons I won’t bore you with. That’s the key story of course, the opening of the English Premier League on Saturday morning. NBC Sports and its various affiliates will show all 360 of the games this season. The Basso Soccer on TV calendar will have all of them listed for your convenience, including the channels you can find them on. Now to the highlights of the coming week.

English Premier League opens Saturday at 6:45 am with Liverpool vs Stoke City on NBC Sports. It’s followed this week by Arsenal vs Aston Villa at 9am and then at 11:30 am by Swansea City vs Manchester United. The ManU game is being shown on NBC, available over the air for all you non-cable/satellite folks. Enjoy!

Saturday night sees the NWSL Regular season come to a close. Fox Soccer is showing the Western NY Flash which features Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd hosting the Boston Breakers. The Flash are in 2nd, behind FC Kansas City. Boston features Heather O’Reilly and Sydney Leroux as well as former Nerinx Hall Marker Julie King on defense. If you haven’t seen a game yet, this will be a nice derby game before the playoffs begin.

Fan’s of the Women’s game will also want to mark Tuesday night’s broadcast premiere of Nine for IX: The 99’ers, a story of the US WNT who won the 1999 World Cup. It includes archival footage shot by the players during the tournament along with current footage of the players today.

UEFA Champions League returns to the air waves on Tuesday and Wednesday. Final playoffs before the Group Stage begins September 17th, the broadcast schedule hasn’t been finalized but Fox Soccer (or Fox Sports 1 as it’s being rebranded) is counting on these games to keep themselves relevant to soccer fans. I wouldn’t be surprised to see AC Milan vs PSV Tuesday and Arsenal vs Fenerbahçe SK Wednesday. Stay tuned.

GolTV is your source for Bundesliga action and they have Bayern Munich on Saturday morning followed by Dortmund on Sunday. Can’t ignore ESPN who also bring us Barcelona. Catch the Spanish Super Cup: Atlético Madrid vs. Barcelona (Final, First Leg) on ESPN2 Wednesday.
