An intriguing interconference matchup kicks off the new season when the Portland Timbers play host to the New York Red Bulls at Jeld-Wen Field before an ESPN2 audience. Both teams are led by new coaches – Caleb Porter having taken over the reins of the Timbers, while former New York defender Mike Petke is now in charge of the Red Bulls. The Timbers are looking for their first trip to the postseason in their third MLS season, while the Red Bulls are coming a third consecutive year where their season ended in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

In other news, The Timbers have named a new Captain.
Will Johnson didn’t arrive to the Portland Timbers expecting to change the captain’s armband situation with veteran Jack Jewsbury (Kickapoo/SLU).
And even after Johnson, the former Real Salt Lake midfielder who was one of new head coach Caleb Porter’s first acquisitions this offseason, was given named team captain for 2013, he said it in no way means Jewsbury’s role is diminished.
To make that message official, Porter also named Jewsbury “club captain,” a title more common in overseas leagues.
“I get along really, really well with Jack,” Johnson told MLSsoccer.com after Wednesday’s training session at JELD-WEN Field. “I think he’s great. The things he’s done here over the past two years are commendable. The things he’s done over his career are very respectable; he’s up there with some of the best MLS players who have played in this league.”
