The Springfield SC U17 girls advanced to the Semifinals in their age bracket for the second year in the row. They achieved that by winning their first two matches by a combined total of 8 goals to 1. That led to the decisive third group match against Sporting Blue Valley Supersport. A scoreless tie gave them the point for the Group win while SBV Supersport also advanced as the Wildcard.
The game opened with some promise as both teams went out with a winning attitude. The defenses were were challenged but the keepers less so in the first half. SBV Supersport had a few opportunities, the most promising on a misplayed ball that almost led to a breakaway that was snuffed out. For Springfield SC, the attack was most promising when Alyson Geller created on the wing or as Nicole Ortega weaved her way through the middle of the defense.
The second half was disappointing as SSC failed to show the same spirit as they had in the first half. Knowing that a tie guaranteed advancement, you can’t fault the result but a difficult foe now remains in the hunt and SSC may face them again on November 11th.
The Semifinals now feature the Top 4 teams in the State according to the GotSoccer.com rankings. The SBV Supersport team has won two state titles, at U14 and U15. SLSG Premier Navy won as U16’s last year while Lou Fusz Elite were the runner’s up.
Things have changed on the Club Girls front in the major metropolitan areas in the past year. Much the same way the US Academy program has peeled off players from the High Schools (and Club) teams, so has the ECNL (Elite Clubs National League) which competes at U16-U18. The Futura FC program combined with Sporting BV at the older levels and their best combined team now competes in the ECNL rather than State Cup. The same holds true for St Louis Scott Gallagher, thus the teams competing in State Cup are what would be considered their second teams. That means the Springfield SC squads should be more competitive now, not less and points to the opportunity they have this year.
