Springfield SC Opens State Cup with Win

UPDATED BELOW – The Springfield SC 95-96 Girls opened their account at the Missouri State Cup with a decisive 4-1 win today over the St Louis Scott Gallagher Premier Red squad. Both teams were a bit ragged to open the game, nerves related to the start of Cup play is the usual culprit. SSC settled theirs around the 25th minute when Lydia Holtmann scored a goal following a run into the box on the left side and a nice finish to the right side. Nicole Ortega broke in a minute later to extend the lead and got her second early in the second half. SLSG Red narrowed the lead to 3-1 when a defensive breakdown allowed an easy shot inside the box but Ortega iced it with her third of the match with five minutes remaining.

The second match of the day, against SLSG Premier Green, is underway as this is posted. Scores are listed below for this bracket.

For Springfield, paired for the second time in three years with Sporting BV (formerly Futura), goal differential is critical to getting out of the bracket and into the semifinals again. A pair of wins will probably be necessary to match SBV and the two teams will meet at 11:00 am on Sunday to settle things. I’m going to try and be on hand again.

SPRINGFIELD SC 95/96 I – 4
SLSG PREMIER RED 95/96 – 1

SLSG PREMIER GREEN 95/96 – 0
SPRINGFIELD SC 95/96 I – 4

SBV SUPERSPORT 95/96 – 3
SLSG PREMIER GREEN 95/96 – 1

SLSG PREMIER RED 95/96 – 3
SBV SUPERSPORT 95/96 – 6

For Bracket C, it means that the morning match between SBV Supersport 95-96 and Springfield SC 95-96 will require a win by SBV Supersport while Springfield SC can advance with a tie due to their better goal differential (7 vs 5). Because there are only 3 brackets in this age group, SBV Supersport would advance with a tie as the wild card, with 7 points earned.
