Arkansas Faces SEMO Friday At Lake Country Soccer

arkansas-razorbacks-soccerballArkansas’ soccer team closes its spring exhibition season with a pair of games on the road this weekend.

The Razorbacks, under the direction of first-year head coach Colby Hale, play Southeast Missouri State on Friday and Saint Louis on Saturday.

The SEMO game is Friday at 7 pm on Lake Country Soccer Field in the Cooper Sports Complex in Springfield. Saturday’s game is at Saint Louis at 5 p.m.

The Razorbacks have played five spring exhibition games, including last week’s 2-0 loss at Oklahoma.

“There was a lot to take away from the game on Saturday,” Hale says. “We are getting answers to a lot of questions and the team’s cohesion is growing. In terms of culture and identity, I am pleased with where we are. It is a process, but I am pleased with the progress we’ve made in such a short time.”

This spring, the Razorbacks have a 3-0 win over former Razorbacks in the annual Alumni Game and a 2-0 victory over Tulsa, which was 10-8-3 in the fall.

Arkansas has had goals from five different players – junior midfielder Taylor Green, freshman forward Phyllis George, junior forward Yvonne DesJarlais, junior midfielder Jessie Givens and sophomore midfielder Beth Stratton.

“We started slow and OU capitalized,” Hale says of last week’s game. “That is something we need to fix. We are making mental mistakes that are costing us. We will fix some of those things this week and that will affect the outcome of games. Our performance over the last 70 minutes was good, and the staff and players take confidence in knowing we are improving. The mistakes are fixable and the effort is good.”

Jack Jewsbury Leads Portland Timbers Against Montreal Saturday

Coming off their 1-0 win over Sporting KC last week, the Timber’s will face the Montreal Impact on Saturday at 1:00 pm in Montreal. The expansion Impact are 9th in the Eastern Conference, with a single win in eight games played. The Timber earned only their second win in the game against Sporting KC so this one has added significance as both teams look to develop a winning attitude.

Sporting KC, who have a bye week, will next play when they travel to Montreal for a game on May 5th. Another reason to catch this week’s Timber’s match which is being shown on MLS Live.

The Timber’s sat down with Captain Jack, our own Jack Jewsbury (Kickapoo/SLU) to discuss the match that includes facing former Sporting KC teammate Davey Arnaud (did you know Jack was his best man?) who is now Captain of the Impact. Where will you watch the game?

US Women Drawn With France, Colombia and Korea DPR in Olympics

2012-olympics-londonThe U.S. Women’s National Team will face France, Colombia and Korea DPR in Group G at the 2012 London Olympics taking place from July 25-Aug. 9 at six venues throughout Great Britain. The Olympic Final Draw took place on Tuesday morning in the Bobby Moore Room at Wembley Stadium in London.

The U.S. will open Group G play on July 25 – two days before the Olympic Opening Ceremonies – against France (5 p.m. local / 11 a.m. CT) at the famed Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland’s National Stadium. The USA will then face Colombia at Hampden Park on July 28 (5 p.m. local / 11 a.m. CT) and finish group play against Korea DPR on July 31 (5:15 p.m. local / 11:15 a.m. CT) at the legendary Old Trafford in Manchester, home to Manchester United. (2012 Olympics Schedule)

The USA’s draw pits the Americans against three teams it faced at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and two teams it faced in group play in Colombia and Korea DPR. In Germany, the USA played Korea DPR first and now will face the Asian power in the group finale. Like in the Women’s World Cup, the USA will play Colombia second.

Good News From Mountain View and Willow Springs

From the Howell County News comes Soccer deal one step closer for LHS, WSHS

The Willow Springs and Mountain View-Birch Tree school boards have approved a high school cooperative sponsorship in girls’ soccer, in which Willow Springs girls would play on the Liberty High School soccer team.

Willow Springs parent Katie Sherbo and others spoke to the MVBT board about the partnership Thursday.

“We are asking if you would consider approving that agreement,” said Sherbo, who indicated there was in interest at the junior high level as well.

Superintendent Jerry Nicholson said the proposal had been approved by the Willow Springs school board and that, if approved by the MVBT board, it would go to the Missouri State High School Athletics Association for final approval.

“This agreement would be for two years,” explained Sherbo. “It has to be in place by May 1 and has to be approved by MSHHA.”

I like the tone of the story and the discussion. The communities appear to be thinking of the girls first. Well done and let’s hope it gets done!
