In a game typical of this local derby, emotions ran high and it wasn’t until the second half before a soccer game reared it’s head. With both squads affected by injuries to key players, it would fall to strong individual efforts to create goals this evening.
The first goal came as Hunter Durham fought off a challenge for a head ball and pushed hard into the box where he was able to reach the endline and turn towards the box. His simple square ball towards the penalty spot was one-timed into the net by Connor Heeren, ably filling the central midfield role normally handled by Josh McCutcheon. Heeren’s play this evening, providing a reliable alternative for his teammates, was a highlight for me.
Durham was later rewarded for his hard work tonight when he buried Aaron Strunk’s square ball in the 63rd after Glendale had tied the game. Strunk began his run with a quick turn outside the box, headed for the endline and then to the goal. Durham timed his run well and reached the ball just before Wolfram, Glendale’s keeper, was able to kick it out. Both Kickapoo goals can be seen in the video’s below.
Glendale’s goal was scored by John Chalendar as he was the recipient of Yamille Campo’s hard work, who made an overlapping run that took him down the right side. His cross was deflected to the far side where Chalendar was able to shoot into an unguarded net.
