Area Sectional Games Set

Harrison Stadium

Harrison Stadium

UPDATE 2 – The Class 3 game at Harrison Stadium has also been moved to 4pm. Liberty at Park Hill South is now at 4:30 pm
UPDATED – the Class 2 game at LogRog has been moved to 4pm

The Class 3 game between Glendale and Parkview will be played at Harrison Stadium, a 6pm 4pm start time.

The Class 2 game between Logan-Rogersville and Harrisonville will be played at Logan-Rogersville High School, a 5:30 4:00 pm start time (although I’m betting on a change due to field conditions!) Highway 60 East to Highway 125, go North about 1/2 mile, go past the High School and turn right on Farm Road 174 and then pull into the parking lot which is the first right. You’ll avoid a speed-bump laden parking lot route that way.

The Class 1 game between Springfield Catholic and Dixon is being played at Dixon High School, a 4:30 pm start time. Looks like it must be a scenic drive North on Highway 28, from I-44.

Cobras Capture Missouri U15 President’s Cup

Cobra SC at Missouri President's Cup tourney

Congratulations to the Cobra’s SC U15 Boys team who went undefeated this weekend, winning 4 games and giving up only a single goal in the process. They accomplished it in a 32 hour period as the tournament format required them to play the games between Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.

They will be joined by Imo’s Pizza, from South County St Louis, who won the U16 Playoffs this weekend. Imo’s also went undefeated, outscoring their opponents 20-2 during their four games. Not a national championship but a nice addition to the trophies won by the club over many decades.

In addition, Ozark-based Vehr Factor advances unopposed to the U17 Tournament.

On the local front, here are photos of the Total Demize win over Springfield SC in the U15 Division.

Winners of the Missouri President’s Cup will advance to the Regional Presidents Cup tournament, which will be held June 16-19, 2011 in South Bend, Indiana. All Regional winners will then advance to the National Presidents Cup, which will be held July 7 – 10, 2011 at the James W. Crownie Soccer Park in Des Moines, Iowa.

This video is from this afternoon’s match against Metro Striker’s Red Bull. Cobra’s are in blue and hit the woodwork twice in this video, enroute to a win.

KC drops another one

Sporting KC lost a heartbreaker Saturday night in Seattle.

KC played the Sounders to a 0-0 draw for 90 minutes but Jeff Parke snuck a header by Sporting goalie Jimmy Nielsen in stoppage time to hand KC its fifth straight loss.

The loss drops KC to 1-6-1, they haven’t recorded a point since tying Vancouver on April 2.

The Sounders meanwhile improve 4-3-5 and move up to second place in the Western Conference.

Omar Bravo returned to the lineup for KC after missing the past five games with a sports hernia injury.

Sporting returns home for a US Open Cup match against New England on Wednesday at the Blue Valley District Activities Complex before traveling to Colorado on Saturday.

Springfield SC 94/95 Earn 2nd Season In Midwest Regional League Premier Division

The Springfield Soccer Club hosted the Blue Valley SC (KS) this afternoon at the Greenwood Stadium field at the Cooper Soccer Complex. The final game of the regular season, the local boys needed a win or a tie to ensure they would remain in the top-flight of the Midwest Regional League for a second straight season. They ensured that with a shutout win today.

Springfield SC 94/95 - 1
Blue Valley SC – 0
The game was scoreless at halftime with limited opportunities as the teams played conservatively and controlled. That changed in the second half as both teams came out in a more aggressive attacking mode. SSC came close in the first five minutes when Nic Bauer (pictured) snapped off a quick shot from close range that the keeper was able to push over the crossbar. Soon after, a simple ball to the left side sent Bauer deep into the offensive end where he was able to beat his defender on the endline and move towards the box. As the defenders converged, his square ball was touched and redirected through the six yard box by his teammate ?. As the ball rolled across the face of the goal, all the BVSC GK could do was watch as Andrew Schenk (Nixa 2013) ran onto the ball and buried it at the far post for the game-winner.

The result was not ensured as BVSC pushed forward and were especially dangerous on set pieces but GK Evan Loyd (Greenwood 2013) was up to the challenge as was his defense.

The team, who are ranked 1st in Missouri in their age group, are ranked 21st in Region II. They advance along with the Eclipse Select (IL) who are ranked #4 in Region II and reached Regionals last year, Galaxy Blue (IL), MN Thunder Academy 95 Blue (MN) who were State Champions and Regional Finalists as well as Madison FC Gold (WI) who were State Champions, in the top flight next year.

The final challenge this season will be to take their ranking into the Missouri State Cup, scheduled for June 11-15, and win only the 3rd State Championship for a team from this region. They would join the SSC 90/91 squad that won two titles and included Devon Newport and Graham Basecke (SLU), Ryan Moses (Missouri State) and Ian Kennedy and Ryan Squires (Wm Jewell) among others.
.
Springfield SC will be holding Tryouts June 20-22 this year.

Highlights should be available on KY3 and KOLR10 tonight!

District 11: at Ozark High School
#1 Glendale Falcons – 2
#2 Nixa Eagles – 0
A six minute stretch late in the 2nd half sent Glendale past Nixa into the Sectionals for the third time in four years for the senior class. It was not the seniors who struck the decisive blow however but a pair of sophomores. Allison Yoakam, toiling in the background of her dynamic midfield teammates, Brewer and Opfer, all season got the game winner in the 60th minute this evening when her surprising shot from 30 yards was mis-handled and fell across the endline. Senior keeper Kristin Miller then was lost for the remainder of the game four minutes later while diving to make a save.

Sophomore Drianna Raff got the important second goal in the 66th as she out-raced her defender down the left side and ran onto a square ball, one-timing her shot with the outside of her foot and watching it curl away from freshman Alexi Stagner and into the far side netting.

The loss of Miller, with the resultant downtime so soon after the first goal, meant that the Eagles were not playing with the same focus and intensity they had brought to the game to that point. That was not the case earlier after a direct red card to sweeper Abbie Turnbull 3 1/2 minutes into the second half, when a long ball took an unexpected bounce and sent Emily Cline into the attack, leading to a tripping foul in the box. The resultant PK was sent high by Molly Brewer and the Eagles returned to the attack mode that showed they had learned their lessons well during the season.

Both teams had shots ring off the crossbar in tonight’s game, with Glendale getting one from Cline in the first 10 minutes, later Alix Opfer had one shortly before the penalty kick opportunity. Nixa’s Lauren Moats had one in the first half and this was a game that Nixa could have won as they worked the wings extremely well and avoided Glendale’s strength down the middle.

It was only the second game that senior Emily Cline has NOT scored in, the other being the final regular season game against Catholic. It’s a very positive sign for the Falcon’s graduating class in their efforts to reach the Final 4 a second time.

For the Eagle’s, it’s the first of several likely challenges they will face with the Falcon’s in the coming years. While last year’s run was aided and abetted by some good luck, including beating the Parkview Vikings in a similar fashion to their loss tonight – a proven senior GK giving up an unexpected goal – the future looks very bright. Monday night their Middle School team will play in the Final for the 3rd straight year, this time against Pershing, a feeder school for Glendale. The underclassmen now know the feelings of joy, and pain, and that will only fuel the off-season efforts to a greater level.

Glendale will host Parkview on Tuesday May 24th in the Sectional

The Kansas City area representatives will be narrowed as well, determining the State Semifinal opponent.

District 15: at Park Hill South
#1 Park Hill South Panthers – 5
#3 Truman Patriots – 1

The winner faces the defending State Champion Liberty Jays on Tuesday. The other Sectional features Lees Summit North at Lee’s Summit West.

2011 State Champs 5A - Harrison Goblins

2011 State Champs 5A - Harrison Goblins

UPDATED – From AR.Preps.com – Frequent and intense storms postponed three of the four high school soccer state championship games scheduled for Friday. The only title game that was completed was the Class 4A girls final between Pulaski Academy and Valley View, which was delayed twice by lightning before Pulaski Academy won 2-1 in overtime. The second game of the day, the Class 4A boys championship between De Queen and Conway St. Joseph, began more than an hour past its scheduled start time of 4 p.m. With the score tied 0-0 and exactly 28 minutes remaining in the second half, the teams were called off the field because of lightning.

The Arkansas State Soccer Finals begin today in Fayetteville on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

The Harrison Goblins, a Group Winner at the Ozark Tigers tournament in April, will play Little Rock Christian today in the 5A Girls Title game. In addition, two competitors in the Lady Zizzer Classic, Valley View and Mountain Home, have reached the 4A and 6A Finals respectively. Good luck to our neighbors!
