Farmers Gastropub Watch Party Saturday – Two Choices For Champions League Final!

Bill Griffiths, Farmer's Gastropub (on right)

Bill Griffiths, Farmer's Gastropub (on right)

The Champions League Final between Barcelona and Manchester United kicks off at 1:00 pm Saturday on Fox Sports Midwest (same channel as Cardinal’s games, right?) which conflicts with the Springfield Catholic Quarterfinal game. So…

For local Soccer fans Bill Griffiths will have two screenings of the game at Farmer’s Gastropub. You can catch it live at 1:00 pm OR following the Catholic match at approximately 4:00 pm. I’ll be in attendance at the delayed broadcast time, enjoying an early dinner. I invite you to join me before you head off in other directions for the holiday weekend!

Farmers Gastropub noted on their Facebook Page earlier this week – Join us Saturday, May 28…we will be taking donations and donating our proceeds for the day to Ozarks Food Harvest to help our neighbors in Joplin. If you plan on eating out, make your dollars go further.

I’ll reiterate an earlier note – please refrain from using Facebook or Twitter to post spoilers on the game result. I use both tools to keep you informed of local events so I can’t avoid them the way others do in this situation. PLEASE don’t tweet scores if we follow each other!

KC pours it on

Sporting KC jumped all over the New England Revolution Wednesday night, scoring three goals in the first 24 minutes en route to a 5-0 win in the qualifying round of the US Open Cup.

It was the first home game of the year for Sporting KC after eight road games in the league and an Open Cup win at Houston.

“It’s great to have a home game for once,” defenseman Seth Sinovic said. “We appreciate all of the support we had tonight, it definitely gave us an extra boost.”

The win broke a five-game losing streak for KC, which included a 3-2 loss at New England last month.

Forward Chance Myers scored two goals, one on a cross from Omar Bravo in the ninth minute, then 10 minutes later off a Bravo miss. He said he hopes the team can build on the win.

“It’s good to get a victory,” Myers said. “Obviously we haven’t had one in a while. Hopefully we can carry this into the weekend.”

Forward C.J. Sapong also scored two goals for KC. The first on a cross from Sinovic in the 24th and the second on a steal in the 88th.

Sporting coach Peter Vermes said he has seen a lot of progress in Sapong lately.

“He’s a player who plays with his back to the goal very well,” Vermes said. “Today, I think he proved that he is a handful.”

The game was played at Blue Valley District Activities Complex while construction continues on Livestrong Sporting Park. There was a steady rainfall during the game, but Myers said that is just fine with Sporting KC.

“We love it,” Myers said. “Every morning we wet down the field, whether it’s dewy or not. We like when the pitch is pretty slick.”

Aurelien Collin scored the other goal for KC in the 81st.

One of the most impressive things about KC’s dominant victory is that it came with two of their top players, Davy Arnaud and Teal Bunbury, in street clothes. Vermes said that the crowd helped the team play its best soccer.

“There was a real joy in being able to play in front of our home fans, because everywhere we go right now we’re the enemy,” Vermes said.

The win does not count in the MLS standings, but it advances KC into the 16-team Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, named for the team’s old owner.

Sporting KC resumes its MLS road trip 8:00 Saturday at Colorado.

Pershing Captures Middle School Crown

Pershing Generals celebrate game-winner

Pershing Generals celebrate game-winner

The Pershing General’s returned to the winner’s circle this evening, following a three year absence, by defeating the Nixa Eagle’s 2-1. The Eagles opened the scoring in the 8th minute when #43 pounced on a loose ball that was mishandled by the goalkeeper. Unlike the last meeting between these two teams in early May, when Nixa won 3-2 after opening a 3-0 lead, the General’s comeback did not fall short.

Pershing’s first goal was scored Kasey Opfer on a second chance opportunity, when an initial shot hit the upright and came back out into play. That goal in the 21st minute sent the teams to halftime tied and drenched as a cold rain became coming down midway through the half. It was beginning to look like overtime, especially when with 7 minutes remaining Allie’s direct kick from the right side of the penalty area was somehow kept out by Pershing’s keeper.

The decisive blow was struck by Olivia Wolfram in the 68th minute (70 minute games). A diagonal ball from Pershing’s defensive end sent Wolfram towards goal in a foot-race with Nixa’s defense. Two key decisions by Wolfram, first a simple cut back towards goal that turned her defender and created space just outside the box and more importantly, a simple controlled shot to the far post that hit the upright and bounced into the back of the net. A lesson well-learned in patience after I saw her miss 4 or 5 similar opportunities the previous week in the semifinal win over Cherokee. A quick celebration, two minutes of frenzied defending as Nixa pushed for the equalizer and the game was over.

Tonight’s loss was the third straight for the Eagles in the Championship game. The results of that consistent level of play can be seen in their older ‘sisters’ results at Nixa High School. The next step will be finding it in themselves to get past Pershing/Glendale. They accomplished that with Catholic and Kickapoo the past two years. One more larger goal to achieve.

In the JV1 Final that preceded this game, the Bolivar Liberators won 8-0 over the Willard Tigers on six goals scored by #19

Drury women’s soccer coach Alf Bilbao has announced the completion of a five-member recruiting class for the 2011-12 season – including three Springfield prep standouts – for the Panthers.

Joining the DU program this fall are:

Emily Cline, Glendale Falcons (2011)

Emily Cline, Glendale Falcons (2011)

Emily Cline – Forward from Springfield’s Glendale High School who plans to play both soccer and basketball at Drury. Emily currently has a school-record 42 goals on the season after scoring six goals in one game in a state playoff win over Parkview. An All-State selection as a junior and headed for that honor again this season, Cline was recently inducted into the Glendale Athletics Hall of Fame and received the MSHSAA Citizenship/Sportsmanship Award. An all-region performer in 2009 and 2010, she was the district’s Offensive Player of the Year as a junior and is also a member of the Springfield Soccer Clu “Emily is a very powerful, athletic player who is dominant in the air,” Bilbao says. “She can create numerous problems for backs with her pace, toughness and determination. She is a valuable addition to the team.”

Sarah Duffy – A central midfielder from Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa, OK who led Bishop Kelley to a State Championship in 2008 and 2010, and is competing for a third title this spring. She’s an all-district performer and a member of the Tulsa Blitz club team. “Sarah is a very smart, energetic attacking player that will be able to play numerous positions for us,” Bilbao says. “She is an extremely competitive individual on the field.”

Shelby Hatz, Springfield Catholic (2011)

Shelby Hatz, Springfield Catholic (2011)

Shelby Hatz – Forward from Springfield Catholic High School in Springfield, MO. Hatz led the Fightin’ Irish to a Class 1 state title in 2010 and has her team back for another title run this spring. She’s a two-time Class 1 Co-Offensive Player of the Year for the Central/Southwest Region and a two-time Missouri all-state selection (2009, 2010).She plays for the Springfield Soccer Club as well as the Scott Gallagher-Moser group in St. Louis. “Shelby is an incredibly pacey front runner/wide player that will give us an added attacking dimension,” Bilbao says. “Her ability to find the back of the net will certainly help us in the future.”

Andrea Parker, Springfield Catholic (2011)

Andrea Parker, Springfield Catholic (2011)

Andrea Parker – Centerback from Springfield Catholic High School in Springfield, MO. Andrea is also a member of the 2010 state championship team and an all-region selection who earned honorable mention all-state honors her junior season. She, too, plays for the Springfield Soccer Club. “Andrea is able to play at the center of defense or as a defensive midfielder,” Bilbao says. “She is a very athletic and a tough back that will develop into a very good college soccer player.”

Caitlin Redmond – A back from Thomas Edison Preparatory High School in Tulsa, OK, Redmond was her prep squad’s Offensive Player of the Year and a First Team All Metro selection her junior year, in addition to a teammate of Duffy’s on the Tulsa Blitz. “Caitlin is a solid, consistent back who likes to get forward from the wingback position,” Bilbao says. “She also has an ability to score goals, as she has proven at the high school level.”

Drury finished 8-9-2 last season and is 57-33-11 in Bilbao’s five seasons with the Panthers.

Class 3 Missouri Girls Soccer – Glendale Will Face Rock Bridge

Ashleigh Paschel, Camdenton Lakers (2012)

Ashleigh Paschel, Camdenton Lakers (2012)

A trio of Ozark Conference squads are playing in Class 3 Sectional matches today. The winners of their respective games will advance to play each other in the Quarterfinal game this Saturday. Camdenton travels to Columbia while Glendale will host Parkview.

District 9/10: at Rock Bridge
Rock Bridge Bruins (15-7-1) – 4
Camdenton Lakers (21-3) – 1
The Bruin’s, after giving up an early lead on Danielle Brooks goal in the 30th minute, retook the lead via a penalty kick in the 35th minute and scored two more in the second half to advance to the Quarterfinals for the second straight year. Goals for Rock Bridge were scored by Laurie Frew, Sarah Humphrey, Carmen Boessen and Alyssa Fancher.

They will now host the Glendale Falcons, a team they beat in the winner’s bracket at the Kickapoo Shootout, on Saturday in Columbia. The loss is the only blemish on Glendale’s record this year.

The Lake Sun looks at the game. I’d suggest you keep an eye on juniors seniors Ashleigh Paschel and Hayley Baker. Rock Bridge is a strong, physical team and these two will need to set the tone for their team tonight.

District 11/12: at Harrison Stadium, 4:00 pm (note time change)
Glendale Falcons (19-1) – 7
Parkview Vikings (12-9) – 0
Senior Emily Cline scored 3 goals in each half, for a total of 6 during the game, in leading the Falcon’s to the Quarterfinal. Cline’s goals put her at 42 total for the season which establishes a new school record, surpassing Jason Price who scored 41 for the Boys in 1990.

These teams played each other twice in one week in mid-April with Glendale getting a 5-0 win both games. Since that time Parkview’s biggest win was an OT thriller against Kickapoo in late April. The Vikings have 7 senior starters who know what needs to be done.

The winner’s will play on Saturday May 28th at a site to be determined. The winner advances to the Final 4.

District 13/14: at Lee’s Summit West, 4:00 pm
Lee’s Summit West (22-5) – 2
Lee’s Summit North (18-5) – 4

District 15/16: at Park Hill South
Park Hill South (22-3-1) – 1
Liberty Jays (23-3) – 3

The KC Quarterfinal will feature Lee’s Summit North against Liberty. The Bronco’s from Lee’s Summit North have defeated Liberty twice this season – in a penalty kick shootout following a scoreless dras in early April and by a narrow 1-0 score in early May. Should be quite the battle Saturday!
