Missouri Class 2 Girls Soccer Final Four

2010 Missouri Girls Class 2 Semifinal, Notre Dame de Sion vs Notre Dame St LouisThe Class 2 semifinal round will open at noon on Friday with a pair of St Louis teams facing off, followed by a pair of Kansas City area teams at 2:00 pm

Notre Dame Rebels (18-6-1) -
Visitation Vivettes (19-5) –
A rematch of last years final, won by Visitation. The two teams met in the final match of the regular season in a game won by Viz 4-3. Here’s the Post-Dispatch description:

The Vivettes dominated the ball and spent most of the match knocking it around on the Rebels’ half of the field. Lydia Harlan netted her first career hat-trick, scoring the last three Visitation goals after junior Julia Bartolacci tied the game 1-1 with 15 minutes to go in the first half. Harlan, who now has 11 goals on the season, is one of the many weapons Visitation has at its disposal. Sophomore striker Jade Klump and senior midfielder Courtney Young lead the team in goals with 20 and 16, respectively.

For the Rebels, midfielder Michelle Auer (#4), tallied two goals in the game, pushing her season total to 41 at the time. She now has 49 goals and 17 assists for 115 points. Auer was the 2010 Class 2 Player of the Year and has committed to SIU-Edwardsville. Jessica Bayens (#3) is headed for D2 Rockhurst and Elizabeth Flowers (#13) will play at McKendree (NAIA).

Visitation is sending Mackenzie Barringhaus and Ellie Bumb to Bellarmine (D2-GLVC) while Kaitlyn Deister will play at Missouri S&T (D2-GLVC), Courtney Young joins Auer at SIU-Edwardsville (D1-OVC) and Lydia Harlin is headed to Denison (D3)

Harrisonville Wildcats (23-4) -
Notre Dame de Sion Storm (15-6) -

A rematch of last year’s Quarterfinal game, won by the Storm 1-0, will call on the Wildcat’s full powers to advance to the title match. The Storm, ranked either #3 or #2 all year in the Missouri Soccer Coaches poll, are led by Junior forward Caroline Shay and defender Haley Fritzlen, a Midwest All-American last year headed to Marquette this season (Shay has also verballed to Marquette, with NDdSion coached by Marquette grad Matt Darby.

The two teams met early this season, in a game won 3-0 by Notre Dame de Sion. Later in the season, Pembroke Hill, who Harrisonville defeated 2-1 had lost 4-0 the previous week to the Storm. . Another factor to consider is strength of schedule. Notre Dame de Sion competed in the MO-KS Border battle, losing 0-2 to St Thomas Aquinas as well as playing a full complement of Class 3 programs in the KC area.

The Wildcats have four college signees, including Christina Harold (#1) and Alex Erickson (#2), headed to Park University (NAIA), Shalyne Wheeler (#7) to Southwest Baptist University (D2-MIAA) and Karson Wilson (#18), Emporia State University (D2-MIAA) who will look to finish their careers on the highest note possible.

The Championship game between Notre Dame (STL)/Visitation and Harrisonville/Notre Dame (KC) will be played Saturday at 4:00 pm.

The 3rd place game between Notre Dame (STL)/Visitation and Harrisonville/Notre Dame (KC) will be played Saturday at 10:00 am.

Common opponents for Harrisonville and Notre Dame (STL) is Marshall. The Rebels walloped Marshall 8-0 at the West Plains Tournament in late April while Harrisonville defeated Marshall 4-0 earlier in April.

Class 3 Quarterfinals – Glendale Advances

Alix Opfer, Glendale Falcons (2012)

Alix Opfer, Glendale Falcons (2012)

The Falcon’s are in Columbia today for their Quarterfinal match against the Rock Bridge Bruins. The Falcon’s only loss this season came at the hands of the Bruins, when the teams met earlier this year in the 2nd round of the Kickapoo Shootout. Rock Bridge won 3-2 before falling to Nixa in OT of the Championship game. Both teams were missing key players that weekend, with Molly Brewer participating in a debate tournament while the Bruins were missing a starting center midfielder and outside back.

The Falcon’s have been able to out-score their opponents all season but Rock Bridge will be prepared for Cline. Glendale has diversified their scoring in May but just as importantly, they will need to defend against a team that has a pair of dynamic junior forwards that can be a handful, especially Carmen Boessen. Alix Opfer (pictured) will carry the majority of responsibility for marshaling the defense. They also need to be prepared for the Rock Bridge fans.

Rock Bridge Bruins (16-7-1) - 0
Glendale Falcons (20-1) – 1 (2nd OT)
Molly Brewer scored on a floater from the left side of the box that the keeper mis-judged, allowing it to fall into the far side of the net, sending Glendale to the Final 4 next weekend. The Bruin’s best chance on the day came in stoppage time of regulation when junior Anne Alioto was taken down in the box. Fellow junior Carmen Boessen’s resulting penalty kick went over the crossbar, leading to the overtime. The Columbia Tribune covers the game as does the Missourian. Video of the game-winner can be seen on the KOMU website

Lindbergh (20-6) – 0
Ursuline Academy (15-4-1) – 1
At Oakville HS at 10:00 am – Ursuline eked out a narrow 1-0 win to reach the Quarterfinals

Incarnate Word Red Knights (15-4-1) – 4
Francis Howell North (17-6-1) – 0
From the Post-Distpatch – The Red Knights, who defeated Howell North 3-2 in overtime in late March, grabbed the lead Saturday when a far-post corner from Allie Zielman deflected off a Howell North defender and into the net.

At Incarnate Word at 1:00 pm – IWA beat Pattonville to get here while Howell North is counting on Missouri State signee Kelsey Fouch to help them reach them Final 4.

Lee’s Summit North (19-5) – 1
Liberty Jays (24-3) – 3
From the KC Star – The score was tied 1-1 at halftime before Clark beat LS North’s keeper Caroline Stanley with a low and precise goal to the right of the net. Within 11 minutes Clark shot again, and Stanley initially stopped the ball, but it trickled past her.

A reminder – Springfield Catholic will be collecting cases of water and taking cash donations for the tornado victims at the game today. The game is at 1:00 pm and is being played at Harrison Stadium due to standing water at Catholic HS.

These two teams met in the Quarterfinals last year, a game won by Catholic 4-0 when SoBoCo had Billie Till. This year the key scoring threat is Hannah Schiltz.

Southern Boone County Eagles (20-7) – 0
Springfield Catholic Fightin’ Irish (21-4) – 6
The Irish got on board 2 1/2 minutes into the match when freshman Lydia Holtmann worked a pair of give-and-goes deep in the Eagle’s territory, finally slipping past a last defender as she moved into the box and fired low to the near post, beating the keeper. Nicole Ortega scored a pair of goals in the next 18 minutes and the Irish went on to defeat the Central Missouri representative. Goals were also scored by Jordan Banasik, Shelby Hatz and Natalie Smid.

The semifinal game between Catholic and Pembroke Hill will be Friday at 1:00 pm. The 2nd game Saturday will be at either noon or 11 am, depending on whether they win or lose respectively.

St. Pius X (10-14) – 0

John F. Kennedy (12-10) – 3
Orchard Farm (16-7) – 4

Class 2 Final 4 Features Harrisonville, Notre Dame Squared and Viz

Shalyn Wheeler, Harrisonville Wildcats (2011)/SBU Bearcats

Shalyn Wheeler, Harrisonville Wildcats (2011)/SBU Bearcats

No games of interest to Southwest Missouri unfortunately but I’ll be keeping an eye on the Moberly vs Harrisonville game. Harrisonville has one Southwest Baptist signee in Shalyn Wheeler (pictured) who Head Coach Rob Podeyn (seated in back row, in black shirt with black sunglasses) was out watching during the the Sectional game at Rogersville last weekend. There are also six other seniors graduating with her, impacting their pursuit of a 3rd straight District title in 2012.

Farmington Knights (16-8) – 1
Notre Dame St Louis Rebels (17-6-1) – 5
The Rebels return to the Final 4 for the fifth straight time where they will reprise last years Title game, a loss to Visitation by a 5-3 score. The Rebel’s have never won a championship.

The game against Visitation will be at noon on Friday

Visitation Academy (18-5) – 1 (2 OT’s)
St. Dominic (20-6) – 0
The defending Class 2 Champions get a golden goal game-winner to return the Final 4

Moberly Spartans (20-2-1) – 0
Harrisonville Wildcats (22-4) – 2
The Wildcats advance to the Final 4 for the first time where they will face off against the Storm, who advanced to the Final 4 in 2010 by beating Harrisonville 1-0 in the Quarterfinals. Should be a good one!

The semifinal game between Harrisonville and Notre Dame de Sion will be Friday at 2:00 pm

Notre Dame de Sion Storm (14-6) – 2

Help Joplin - Please DonateSpringfield Catholic High School will be accepting donations of water and money at the Quarterfinal soccer match they are hosting Saturday.

You are invited to bring water (by the case please) as well as cash donations to the game. Representatives from the High School will be there to collect them and ensure they are delivered to Joplin.
