Nixa Eagles, Kickapoo Gold Division Champs, 2011CHAMPIONSHIP
Nixa Eagles – 3 (1st OT)
Rock Bridge Bruins – 2
Sr Kelsey Bartell gets the game winner in the 1st min of OT as the Eagles fight back with a goal in the final min of regulation by Shelby Zielke, direct from the corner kick (video) and Bartell’s winner. Bartell’s goal came as she opportunistically collected a cross from Anne Pierce, who one-timed Courtney Freirich’s back pass. Bartell beat the keeper to the ball and touched it past to the far post.

Bartell opened the scoring in the 31st when she ran onto a ball from Lauren Moats at the near post and redirected it into the roof of the net. #21, Anna Alioto, scored for RB with a ball from the right side over the GK reach.

The Bruins #7, Alyssa Fancher, found space on the far post in the 72nd min as the Nixa defense collapsed on Carmen Boessen and Alioto. Boessen’s square ball across the face was an easy tap in for 7 for the late lead.

2011 Kickapoo Lady Chiefs Shootout – Gold Division

RockBridge, Brittany Kirkpatrick, Nixa (2013)

RockBridge, Brittany Kirkpatrick, Nixa (2013)

The 16th Annual Shootout Gold Division features Class 3 Finalists Rock Bridge as well as Glendale, Nixa and Parkview, with Poplar Bluff and Jackson from the Cape area, and Parkway West and Bishop Dubourg from the St Louis area.

Want a pick for the final? How about Rock Bridge vs Nixa, a pair of teams who last met in the State Quarterfinals last May. Nixa will have to get past Class 2 Bishop DuBourg today and face off against either Parkview or Parkway West Saturday morning to reach the Final. That game’s a toss up and if the Eagles have gotten their mojo back, I expect to see them in the Final.

Rock Bridge will have a more difficult path. Their first game is against Jackson, ranked #13th in the first Girls poll this season. Their reward if they achieve that will likely be #15 ranked Glendale, who face Poplar Bluff on Friday evening. Regardless, it should be quite a final on Saturday at 3:30 pm.

FRIDAY April 15th

BISHOP DUBOURG – 2
NIXA Eagles – 7
DuBourg opened the scoring early but the Eagles fought back with a pair of goals late in the 1st half. Lauren Moats scored with a shot in the box and later DeHart got free for a goal.

Match Stats, First half: Nixa goals by Lauren Moats, assisted by Shelby Zielke; Rachel Murphy, assisted by Payton DeHart. Second Half: Murphy, assisted by DeHart; Bishop DuBourg Goal; Courtney Frerichs unassisted, Murphy, assisted by DeHart; Keley Bartell unassisted; Zielke unassisted.

ROCK BRIDGE Bruins – 3
JACKSON Indians – 2
Update – Rock Bridge came back with the final two goals to earn the win against the Indians. Midway through the second half, Anna Alioto tapped in a cross from Carmen Boessen, arriving as the ball dropped in the wind at the far post. When freshman Laurie Frew put a thru ball into her path, Boessen beat the keeper to the ball, cut to the middle and scored into an open net for the final margin.

It’s cold and miserable but both teams moved the ball well.

POPLAR BLUFF – 0
GLENDALE – 6
A number of good opportunities for the Falcons but only Emily Cline was able to finish one in the first half. Alix Opfer has scored a pair in the second half.
Match Stats: Alix Opfer (2G/1A), Becca Burton (2G), Emily Cline (1G/1A), Sarah Powell (1G).

PARKVIEW Vikings – 3
PARKWAY WEST Longhorns – 2
The Vikings, playing with the wind, have a pair of goals at halftime from Becca Castillo and Holly Messick. The Longhorns battled back with a nice shot by Rachel Alizadeh who sent a left footed shot to the far post, after running from right to left outside the box. The Vikings responded with a goal of their own within two minutes when Becca Castillo, who scored the Vikings 2nd goal as well late in the first half, pounced on a loose ball and buried it when Parkway’s keeper knocked down a cross but was unable to clear it or hold it. The Longhorns got one more in the final 5 minutes but were unable to get the tying goal.

2011 Kickapoo Lady Chiefs Shootout – Brown Division

Nicole Ortega, Catholic (2014) & Miriam Melugin, Kickapoo (2014)

Nicole Ortega, Catholic (2014) & Miriam Melugin, Kickapoo (2014)

The 16th Annual Kickapoo Lady Chief’s Shootout features local squads Kickapoo, Republic and Catholic, with Lee’s Summit West and Oak Park representing the Kansas City area. Jefferson City, Heritage (AR) and Francis Howell from St Charles, round out the lineup for the weekend.

A prediction, is that what you want? How about Kickapoo vs Catholic, a chance to test each other after their game two weeks ago. The Fightin’ Irish open today with Francis Howell, a team that just jumped to #7 in the St Louis Large School rankings after shutting out Pattonville 2-0 on Saturday, a team they lost to in the Quarterfinals last year who went on to play in the Class 3 Final against Liberty. If they can get past that challenge, it’s Jeff City or Oak Park, either a lesser challenge.

Kickapoo’s path to the Final begins with a game against 1st year program Republic, coached by long-time Kickapoo assistant Mike Hines. That leads to a Saturday morning match up with Lee’s Summit West most likely. The Titan’s, ranked #7 in the state, are battle tested following the weekend matches in the Heart of America Classic and an 0-4 loss to St Teresa’s Academy last night. LSW faces Heritage, out of Rogers AR, on Friday but should get past the 7A School. The 2nd round games will be at 11:30 am Saturday at Kickapoo to get to the final that evening at 5:15 pm.

Friday April 15th

FRANCIS HOWELL – 3
SPRINGFIELD CATHOLIC – 4 (1st OT)
The Fightin’ Irish needed all their tools in the game today. A single goal in the first half, followed by a goal early in the second half, gave them a 2 goal lead that would not last. Howell fought back with 3 straight goals. Only a goal in stoppage time by senior Rebecca Mayus got the Irish into overtime. The game-winner was scored by ?

Natalie Smid scored the 1st half goal, Shelby Hatz scored early in the second and then Francis Howell got goals from A Rodriguez and a pair from J. Catalano before Rebecca Mayus, assisted by Andrea Parker, tied the game.

Portland Timbers vs Chicago Fire – 10pm Tonight ESPN2

Jack Jewsbury in Springfield, MO 2006

Jack Jewsbury in Springfield, MO 2006

Happy belated birthday to Jack Jewsbury who turned 30 yesterday (Wednesday April 13th). Captain of the Portland Timbers, he’ll lead them onto the national stage tonight when they play their first home game at the newly christened JELD-WEN Field. Chicago (1-1-1) comes into the game after a loss at Seattle on Saturday. Portland (0-2-1) got their first point on Jack’s goal in a tie at New England on April 2nd.

Yahoo Sports

The Portland Timbers began their MLS tenure with a pair of losses before concluding a season-opening road trip by picking up their first point. They don’t want to settle for anything less than three Thursday night.

The Chicago Fire are the opponent for expansion Portland’s much-anticipated debut at Jeld-Wen Field, which underwent a major renovation that the Timbers expect will give them a big home-field advantage.

The Offside – Portland Timbers

There are three clear keys to success for the Timbers tonight: First, take the lead or at least keep from giving up a goal in the first half; Second, take advantage of the vast spaces between Chicago’s midfield and defensive bands; and Third, flood the defensive third to prohibit movement by the Fire’s dynamic South American.

Chicago Fire Confidential

The Fire will face an old nemesis in forward Kenny Cooper who always seemed to manage a goal against Chicago while playing for FC Dallas. Cooper is Portland’s main offensive weapon and tallied the Timbers first ever MLS goal on opening night against Colorado. He’s joined up top by 25 year old Colombian Jorge Perlaza.
