Thursday; Marcotte Scores Tiger’s First

Republic Tigers, 2011 Varsity Starters, 1st Home Game

Republic Tigers, 2011 Varsity Starters, 1st Home Game

If the Republic Lady Tigers show the same verve and fearlessness I saw tonight in the programs first ever home match, their fans have a lot to look forward to.

Republic Tigers - 1
Waynesville Tigers – 2

Coach Mike Hines, in his pre-game speech about lessons learned in Tuesday’s season opening loss at Rolla, got one response from his squad – step it up. Waynesville, a young but improving program, was not prepared.

The Tiger’s first ever goal was scored in the 11th minute as freshman forward Sarah Marcotte calmly slotted a penalty kick just inside the right upright. It was a lead the Tiger’s held until late in the 1st half as junior GK … took control of her box, roaming far and wide to deny Waynesville, including saving a PK in the 22nd min.

Waynesville, led by sophomore Captain Lori Ann Clark, finally broke through when sophomore .. Pryor joined her in the midfield. The key to Pryor’s play was the patience she showed on the ball and the confidence she showed in Clark. By focusing on simple, short passes, Waynesville finally moved the ball to their expectations. A short pass, followed by a diagonal ball by Clark to the left, sent Dowling in for the tying goal in the 29th. Dowling got the game-winner later when she converted a PK.

The game remained close however and the win was not certain until the final whistle. Waynesville had the better opportunities but were unable to extend their lead.

Pictures and proper names will follow Friday when I have rosters.

Nixa is now 1-0. Nixa JV won their game 10-0

Hickman Kewpies – 0

CJ got the game winner in the 2nd OT from freshman Anissa Williams, assisted by jr. Shelby Campbell. The teams were tied 1-1 on an own goal by Carthage while Sr. Tristen Bass scored for the Tigers.

Concussions

Katie Brewer, Glendale Falcons (2010)

Katie Brewer, Glendale Falcons (2010)

As the Spring season gets off to a slow start, I’d like to point to an increasingly important issue within sports. Two of the finest players produced in the State of Missouri have both seen their careers cut short due to concussions. Lori Chalupny first dealt with issues in 2006 and now, at the age of 26, is likely no longer able to play for the US Women’s team. Taylor Twellman has already retired at age 30 after battling symptoms for two years.

First some definitions and resources from the Centers For Disease Control (CDC).

WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?
A concussion is an injury that changes how the cells in the brain normally work. A concussion is caused by a blow to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. Even a “ding,” “getting your bell rung,” or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.

Download this Concussions Fact Sheet from the CDC to have handy for diagnosing a possible problem.

SIGNS OBSERVED BY COACHING STAFF
• Appears dazed or stunned
• Is confused about assignment or position
• Forgets sports plays
• Is unsure of game, score, or opponent
• Moves clumsily
• Answers questions slowly
• Loses consciousness (even briefly)
• Shows behavior or personality changes
• Can’t recall events prior to hit or fall
• Can’t recall events after hit or fall

SYMPTOMS REPORTED BY ATHLETE
• Headache or “pressure” in head
• Nausea or vomiting
• Balance problems or dizziness
• Double or blurry vision
• Sensitivity to light
• Sensitivity to noise
• Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy,
• Concentration or memory problems
• Confusion
• Does not “feel right”

There is pending legislation in the Missouri related to High School concussions.

ST. LOUIS, MO. (KCUR) – St. Louis area medical professionals are throwing their support behind a bill making its way through the Missouri legislature. The bill would help protect high school athletes from concussions.

Among other measures, the High School Sports Brain Injury Prevention Act would require student athletes to be cleared by a doctor before returning to play or practice. It’s currently awaiting a committee vote in the Missouri House of Representatives.

CDC Injury Prevention and Control – Traumatic Brain Injury

Wall Street Journal – Ben Roethlisberger’s Concussion and the Risks of Youth Sports

US Soccer has also looked at the issue and offers the following basic outline on prevention and care

You don’t have to be “knocked out” in order to have a concussion. There are many other clues to look for that might indicate the brain is stunned including headache, confusion, memory trouble, nausea, poor balance, vision problems, and trouble concentrating.

An athlete should never return to play or even exercise while experiencing any concussion symptoms. In fact, anyone suspected of having suffered a concussion should not play again that same day even if symptoms clear up quickly. Remember the adage “when in doubt, sit them out”.

An athlete with a concussion should be evaluated by a medical doctor who can rule out other serious problems and then guide the gradual return to sports. The road back requires several days and should always be taken even more slowly with kids because young, developing brains may be more vulnerable. A general plan consists of a period of physical and mental rest followed by a trial of aerobic exercise such as running then solo soccer drills. If each step is performed without any symptoms or problems with brain function, it’s time to progressively reintroduce heading. The US Soccer protocol involves practice on a ball tossed from six yards away one day, then from no more than eighteen yards out the next day, then finally on balls thrown from beyond 18 yards on day 3. If the player can perform each step without any symptoms then he or she can resume full practice with the team.

Tuesday Game Reports

Missouri State Lady Bears Spring Season

Missouri State Bears vs Missouri S&TThe Lady Bears opened their Spring season this afternoon with 90 minutes of soccer on the fast and windy Plaster Stadium pitch. Facing off against D2 Missouri S&T, the Spring season allows the teams to work on some projects and take out their energy against another team rather than their teammates.

Working in three 30 minute sessions, the first two were scoreless and offered a few insights into what the projects might be. I’ll comment on the Miner’s first, then the Lady Bears.

The Miner’s came out strong this afternoon, working hard to go forward and pressure the Bear’s. Reflective of the strong season they had in the Fall, when they reached the GLVC Playoff’s for the first time ever, the ladies worked the ball well. The team lost four key seniors from that run but return a strong core led by seniors to be Melissa Young (M/F), Paige Smothers (D) and Stacy Luquette who takes over the starting role in goal. Junior-to-be Colleen Lewis is the midfield general and she’d fit in well on the Bears.

The Bear’s lost seniors Jordan Reppell and Sarah Linsin from the backline that took them to the MVC Final last year. It appears they have also lost freshman Brooke Williams from the State Champion Liberty Jay’s, who was the most dangerous player on the pitch for them once Rachel Weimer went down injured.

Freshman Tiffany Laughlin may be called on to play the same role for the Bears she did for the Pattonville when she moved to the back line as a senior for the 2nd Place Pirates. In the middle I like junior Jesslyne McGrath’s calm under pressure and Adrianne Kalogerou also worked well in the outside defensive position. Lauren Wendt showed good positioning and the ability to get to the goal. All three Springfield players got in plenty of minutes (Bailes, Roberts, Stewart) with Bailes starting in central midfield and Roberts at an outside midfield position.

Spring Schedule
April 3rd vs Missouri Valley College (NAIA), 1pm
April 9th vs SBU (D2), 1pm
April 9th vs Drury (D2), 7pm
April 16th vs UCM, 6pm
April 19th vs MSSU, 6:30pm

All matches are in Plaster Stadium on Campus

Catholic Opens Title Defense

The Class 1 State Champions opened their title defense with a shutout win at home over the Lebanon Yellowjackets Friday evening.

Springfield Catholic – 5
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 0

Freshman forward Nicole Ortega opened her high school career with a goal approximately 5 min into the game on an assist from Rebecca Mayus. Senior Shelby Hatz, headed for Drury in the Fall, got the second on a wonderful volley off of freshman Ludia Holtmann’s cross. Ortega got a second, from Hatz, in the 1st half.

In the second half, senior Natalie Smid scored from Connor Guy’s assist, followed by frosh Holtmann’s first Varsity goal on an assist from Smid.

The Yellowjackets battled throughout the game and as Head Coach Tom Sorenson noted afterwards, the results were good for his young team. They are much improved and will compete at a higher level this year.

Send Me Your SchedulesCoaches, Boosters or Parents – I am still looking for game schedules for most of the teams in the region.

I cannot cover your team if I am unaware of when you are playing. I have a simple spreadsheet that you can complete to add your games to my calendar. There’s a secondary benefit for you. If you use this spreadsheet, you can then upload it to Google, Yahoo or Microsoft and turn it into a schedule that all of your players, parents and fans can easily add to their calendars. I’d be happy to help you do that via a simple phone call.
