Overtime Penalty Kick Ends Women’s Soccer Season in MVC Championship Match

OMAHA, Neb. – The Missouri State women’s soccer team (10-6-3, 4-1-1) battled the top-seeded Creighton Bluejays (15-3-2, 5-1-0) into overtime of the MVC Tournament Championship match in Omaha, Neb. on Sunday afternoon. Creighton’s Erin Gunther scored on a penalty kick in the 98th minute to give the Bluejays the title and a 2-1 win.

Tara Bailes hit crossbar with Bears’ first shot in the 11th minute of play. Missouri State would record the first four shots in the match. But Creighton’s Beth Fyles converted a fast break for the Bluejays in the 25th minute to put MSU in a 0-1 hole.

Missouri State had the better play in the first half. The Bears outshot the Jays seven to four in the half. Despite allowing two corners to Creighton, the MSU defense was stout for most of the period.

The Bears kept on the pressure registering four of the first six shots in the second half. In the 74th minute, the match would take on a new perspective. Freshman Ashley Washburn received a feed from Nia Williams. Washburn drilled a bending shot into the upper left corner of the net to bring the match all-square at a goal apiece. The goal was Washburn’s first collegiate tally.

The teams headed to overtime tied at 1-1, where Jessica Teahan made arguably her best save of the season. She had to change directions and make a diving stop on a deflection of an Emily Orbell shot in the 97th minute. All told, Teahan made six saves in the match for the Bears.

The Bears outshot Creighton 15 to 12 in the match. Tara Bailes led the way for MSU with four shots. Katelyn Frederickson, Tiffany Laughlin, Shelby Stewart and Washburn tallied two shots apiece.

The MVC Tournament Finals appearance was the Bears fourth in team history. Missouri State reached the finals in 1999, 2000 and 2001, winning the title in 2000. It was the Bears’ seventh overtime match of the year and second-straight in this year’s MVC Tournament.

Jordan Reppell, Nia Williams and Jessica Teahan were named to the MVC All-Tournament team for Missouri State.

MVC Soccer: SIU-Edwardsville Cougars Escape With Tie, Nab #2 Tourney Seed

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (7-6-3, 4-1-2) ended their regular season with their third draw of the year with their 0-0 score against SIU Edwardsville (9-6-3, 4-1-2). However, the Bears still finished the season undefeated at home and only one loss in conference play.

The first half of the game consisted of the Bears and the Cougars trading shots and fighting for ball control up and down the field. The second half saw the rejuvenated Bears pick of the pace. The game was very physical in the first half, but the second half was a battlefield. SIUE picked up a yellow card mid-way through the first-half (21:36), and added two more yellows (49:45, 73:26) in the second. A red card was given to SIUE’s Nash Maduekwe after a very hard tackle to MSU junior David Buckenheimer in the 57th minute. Buckenheimer was escorted off the field, but later returned. This gave the Bears ample opportunity to score, as they had a one-man advantage the rest of the way.

Missouri State shot often throughout the game, notching 23 total shots; ten of which were on goal. Junior Heath Melugin was a force on the offensive end, tallying ten shots; five on goal. Though the Bears had their chances, they were unable to score. Missouri State outshot SIUE, 23-8.

Though the game did not result in a victory, senior keeper Alex Riggs earned his eighth shutout of the season, moving him into first-place in the Valley this season.

The game was also the Living Our Legacy Game. Military personnel were honored during the game. The attendance for the game was 2,027, the second-largest crowd in Missouri State history.

The Bears are now the three seed in the State Farm MVC Championship in Peoria, Ill. The first game will be the #3 Bears against the #6 Evansville Purple Aces on Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. Missouri State defeated Evansville 3-0 in their first contest this season.

Ole’s notes: A fairly negative display of soccer tonight from the Cougars as they came in playing for a tie knowing it would get them the second seed in the tournament. Once they went down a man early in the 2nd half it only exacerbated the problem. To their credit, they achieved the result they needed, keeping the Bear’s from scoring despite an unrelenting attack from a skilled and motivated group of players. The video below is from early in the 1st OT as the boys came close to getting the goal they needed only to be stopped by a pair of quality defensive plays by first Ryan Wilhelm and then Aaron Lantz.

Teahan Helps Get The Bears To The MVC Final

OMAHA, Neb. – The Missouri State women’s soccer team (10-5-3, 4-1-1) advances to the MVC Tournament Championship match following a penalty kick win over Illinois State (9-7-2, 3-2-1) Friday afternoon in Omaha, Neb. Missouri State will face the winner of tonight’s second semifinal match between Evansville and Creighton.

Junior goalkeeper Jessica Teahan had a big day, making a season-high 11 saves in the match. She also made three saves during penalty kicks to get the Bears through to the finals.

The Bears took the early lead in the 22nd minute. Michelle Sommer found a streaking Brooke Williams, who lifted a shot over the ISU keeper and into the top right corner of the net. The goal was Williams’ sixth of the season.

Teahan began the day by making two huge saves in the 28th minute on back-to-back point blank shots by Kyla Cross to hold the lead for the Bears. She made three saves in the first half and Missouri State led at halftime. Teahan continued to be brilliant in net, making a pair of great saves off of the Redbirds’ Rachel Bostick. The first was off of a header in the 61st minute. Three minutes later, she made a diving stop of Bostick to hold the Bears’ lead.

Illinois State tied the match in the 68th minute. Following a free kick and a scramble in the box, Jessica Carlson was able to head the ball into the net for the equalizer.

Teahan continued to come up big for MSU. In the 79th minute, ISU’s Alyssa Schulz broke in behind the Bears’ backline, but Teahan came out and dove to block the shot attempt and keep the match tied.

The teams would play out the end of regulation and both overtime periods without a result. The teams would decide the match on penalty kicks.

During penalty kicks, the keeper made saves of the first five attempts. MSU’s Michelle Sommer broke the streak and buried her PK attempt. Illinois State’s Carlson answered and knotted the PK’s. Nia Williams was next up for the Bears and she too found the back of the net. The match fell back on Jessica Teahan’s shoulders. She made a diving save of Bethany Brown attempt and the Bears won the match.

Class 3 District Finals – Glendale Will Face Carthage Tuesday

District 11 Final
#1 Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
#2 Glendale Falcons – 1 (2nd OT)
The game was won in the 98th minute when Roman Aldaiz buried a penalty kick, following the call against Jake Nedoma of the Kickapoo Chiefs who fouled Alec Martinez in the box.

Here’s the video from KSPR Sports

The Chief’s best opportunity was early as the the Falcon’s were adjusting to a new lineup and a likely hangover after Wednesday’s marathon match. Very early Devan Selsor beat his defender to an excellent thru ball but his shot from the far right was pushed wide by Reece Conner and cleared by the defense. It was midway through the 1st half when Glendale’s attack began to get into gear. The key difference throughout the game was the Falcon’s ability to get into the box and create opportunities while the Chief’s were relying on shots from outside the box or set pieces after Selsor’s early effort. They had two great opportunities that required acrobatic saves by Reece Conner, one in each half (see one in the video), but as the game wore on the strategy began to look less and less likely to succeed. Tyler Moses was called on to make several important saves (see the KSPR video above) to keep the game scoreless and both teams had players step up in key situations, including Nedoma who cleared a ball of the line following a Glendale corner kick. In the end, a quality play by Alec Martinez with his run and ability to beat defenders 1v1 created the opportunity the Falcon’s needed and they capitalized.

The Sectional game between Glendale and Carthage will be played at Carthage on Tuesday, probable start time is 6:00 pm. I’ve been saying Springfield, for that I apologize, too many groups to keep track of. The key – Even numbered districts host in even numbered years.

District 12 Final, 6:00 pm:
#1 Carthage Tigers – 2
#2 Joplin Eagles – 0
The game winner was scored in the 57th minute by Joe Curti with the insurance goal in the 76th by Ismael Serratos. Well played by both sides. Carthage played their style and controlled the ball and work towards the goal from the offensive end. Joplin played the ball long and tried to score off of a counter attack.
