Missouri S&T Miners 1st NCAA Game Friday

S&T Miners

ROLLA, MO – Missouri S&T’s men’s soccer team has qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in school history, as the Miners were selected to the field that was announced Monday evening.

The Miners, 10-5-3 on the season and ranked 16th in NCAA Division II, have earned a spot in the Midwest Regional that will take place at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Ky., this weekend. S&T will open play on Friday at 3 p.m. (Central time) when it takes on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Ashland University.

The 21st-ranked Eagles, who won the GLIAC regular season and tournament titles, will come into Friday’s game at 13-4-3 after winning that conference’s tournament in a penalty kick shootout Saturday over Ohio Dominican. The Miners, meanwhile, won a share of the regular season title in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament, where they were eliminated in overtime by host NKU.

Friday’s game will mark the sixth meeting between the schools and the Miners have won four of the previous five. However, the Eagles won the most recent contest in the 2008 season opener by the score of 4-3. S&T topped Ashland 2-0 a year earlier when current Miner seniors Sam Shaffer (far left in photo), Kenny Gravlin (#10 in photo) and Mario Calderon (#8, not shown) were freshmen.

Host Northern Kentucky, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, will take on the third team from the GLVC in the field, Quincy University. The Hawks and Norse will play the second game of Friday’s doubleheader at 6 p.m. (Central time), with the winners of the two semifinals game slated to play Sunday at noon Central.

Caleb Collier, Missouri S&T Miners (2013)

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T’s men’s soccer team has qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament for the first time ever – advancing to No. 16 nationally and second in the NCAA Division II Midwest region – and has also seen four members of its team earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors for their work in the classroom.

Miner junior midfielder Ryan Muich and sophomore back Caleb Collier were named to the Academic All-District first team at their positions, while seniors David Kekec and Kenny Gravlin were second-team honorees.

Muich, an aerospace engineering major, has started all 17 games for the 10-4-3 Miners this season and is tied for the team lead with three assists, one of which came on the Miners’ first goal in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Bellarmine in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament. Collier, who is majoring in mechanical engineering, has scored once this season – in S&T’s 1-0 win at Drury in September – and along with Gravlin has been part of a defensive unit that has been the GLVC’s best during the 2010 season.

The Miners have allowed a league-low 10 goals on the season and have recorded a school record 11 shutouts.
Kekec, a two-time All-GLVC selection in the midfield, has two goals and an assist for the Miners this season. Kekec is majoring in mechanical engineering as is Gravlin, who has an assist this year.

Carthage Tigers, 2010 Class 3 Sectional winners

    CLASS 3

Glendale Falcons (16-9-1) – 0
Carthage Tigers (24-4) – 3
The Tiger’s got on the scoreboard in the 10th minute tonight when Cesar Aguirre’s ball into the box drifted over the outstretched arms of the Falcon’s keeper and settled into the far side netting. It came as Carthage’s pressure offense kept Glendale on the defensive and ended up setting the tone for the game.

I noted after Carthage’s 0-5 loss to Catholic in late September that the Tiger’s would need to learn how playoff soccer. Head Coach Jacob Osborne noted following tonight’s game, it was a message the boys learned as well on the pitch that evening. They began working on the necessary steps the next day, first asking the players what they felt needed to be worked on. The ideas flowed and the buy-in followed. Three key changes included moving Joe Curti into a withdrawn forward position and moving Mark Navarette into the midfield, ensuring that the best two players were getting as many touches as possible. With junior Manny Marquez moving from the midfield into a central defender role, the transformation was complete.

The Falcon’s came out hard in the second half and attempted to get past Carthage as the Tiger’s went into a defensive shell. The response by Carthage was instinctive, as the pressure of the game settled on their minds but as they held off Glendale’s efforts, the Tiger’s slowly began to play their game again and were soon rewarded. As Mark Navarette notes in his interview (below), it was nice play on the left side that led to Navarette’s long cross into the box that Henry Luna headed back into the goal just before it went over the end line just beyond the far post.

A beautiful goal, created by a team that was moving forward and back as a unit, never allowing the Falcon’s danger boys, Hart and Martinez, the space they needed to create. A few opportunities were created outside the box, including 3 set pieces due to fouls, but nothing that goalkeeper Ludin Gonzalez was unable to handle when a shot did get past the defense.

The final goal came when Gonzalez sent a booming kick downfield that reached the Falcon’s box, pulling the keeper out before sophomore forward Ismael Serratos picked up the ball and slid his shot into an unoccupied net for the final margin.

Rock Bridge Bruins (24-5) - 3
Rolla Bulldogs (16-10-2) - 2
Senior Ryan Taylor scored first for the Bruins (23-5). A goal from junior Matt Kelly put Rock Bridge ahead 2-1 and a goal from junior Ryan Schmidt made it 3-1. Rolla scored the game’s final goal.

The Quarterfinal between Rock Bridge and Carthage will be played in Columbia, at Rock Bridge, on Saturday November 13th at noon we believe, although the MSHSAA site notes 12 am.

    CLASS 2

Bolivar Liberators (19-7) – 1
Cassville Wildcats (11-14) – 0
Matt Magana unassisted in the 73rd

Marshall Owls (23-2) – 4
Warrensburg Tigers (17-9-1) – 3
Josh Posegate (WPHS Class of 2000) in his third season as the Owl’s Head Boys Soccer Coach, will be looking to get Marshall back to the Final Four for the first time since 2003. A victory against the Liberators on Saturday would send the Owls to the Final Four in St. Louis on November 19th and 20th. For the Liberators it would be a return trip after finishing 2nd last year, their highest finish ever.

Marshall hosts Bolivar Saturday

    CLASS 1

Crocker Lions (21-3) – 0
Springfield Catholic (19-6) – 4
Catholic got a pair of goals in each half tonight. Sr Adam Entrup opened the scoring 18 minutes in followed by Niko Temofeew in the 34th. Mitchell Moncada and Ryan Randell scored in the second half.

Southern Boone County (19-5) – 0
Sacred Heart (16-11) – 1

Looks like Sacred Heart will host the Quarterfinal between Catholic and Sacred Heart on Saturday

Can You Help A Homeless Teen?

The News-Leader has a story today about “Rare Breed”, a downtown-based organization focused on providing services for teens, in particular homeless teens. Please take a few minutes to learn more about their work and consider offering your support.

Living in the tunnels under Springfield at only 14 years old, Robbie Mortensen is just one of at least 200 teens in Springfield who have experienced homelessness.

Rare Breed is working hard to do something about that fact, but the program needs community support, especially financial, to continue that effort.

Rare Breed is where Robbie — now 18, employed and sharing an apartment with a friend — found the help he needed. He learned about the downtown drop-in center from another teen he met on the bus.

There, he could get out of the cold, eat something and talk with counselors who helped him work through his anger and eventually get his identification in order to get a job.

2009 HOMELESS YOUTH SURVEY
A 2009 survey by the Springfield Homeless Youth Subcommittee of 450 high risk and homeless youth, ages 11-22, at 20 locations found the following:
- 56 percent of youth homeless with family also reported being homeless alone.
- The average age of the first experience of being homeless alone was 15.
- An estimated 950-1,450 Greene County youth, ages 12-17, were homeless at least one night in 2009.
- More than 1 in 6 contemplated suicide in the preceding three months.

Needs identified
- Top five needs: education, transportation, clothing, job search skills, food
- Second five needs: health care, housing, dental, job support, life skills
- Surveyed youth identified top desires as: a youth-oriented multiservice center, transitional housing for pregnant and parenting youth
