John Duncan and WashU Host Matt Medley and Loras Sunday In NCAA D3 Tourney

Senior John Duncan (Joplin 2007) celebrated Senior Day on November 6th by scoring a goal early in the first overtime as the No. 10 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team ended regular season play with a 2-1 victory over the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Francis Field.

Duncan’s shot from 25 yards out got by Chicago goalkeeper Mason Harless at 91:41 for the game-winner. The goal for Duncan was his second of the season. The Class of 2011 has led the Bears to a 51-18-10 (.709) record in their four years on the Danforth Campus.

With the result, the Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team received an at-large berth into the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament. The Bears received a bye into second round play and will face Loras College on Sunday, Nov. 14, at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo., at 1 p.m. Loras defeated Greenville 3-1 in first round action on Thursday, Nov. 11, in Dubuque, Iowa.

Washington University is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the 19th time in school history, and the first since the 2007 season, when the Bears advanced to the sectional finals before falling to Trinity University, 2-1. Washington U. is 25-17-4 (.587) all-time in postseason play, and advanced to the Final Four on five occasions, the last coming in 1987.

With a 14-1-4 overall record in 2010, Washington University is enjoying one of the best seasons in school history. The Bears posted a 4-1-2 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) action, finishing second in the conference behind only New York University. The UAA had four schools selected to participate in this year’s tournament, with New York garnering the automatic bid and Emory University and the University of Rochester also receiving at-large bids.

Loras College was an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. Loras defeated Wartburg College, 2-1, in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) championship on Nov. 6. The Duhawks advanced to the NCAA sectional semifinals a year ago, when they boasted an overall record of 20-3-1.

Washington University won a regular season game against Loras College 1-0 on Sept. 19th. The Bear’s converted an early goal by Patrick McLean to win 1-0 on their home field.

The Loras College men’s soccer team is making their sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships after winning the IIAC Tournament on Saturday night, 2-1 over Wartburg College. Each team entered the tournament after going 7-1 in the regular season and the Knights winning on their home field on October 8. Luke Prater (Kickapoo/SSC) is a starting midfielder and All-Conference player for Wartburg.

Quarterfinals For Carthage, Bolivar and Catholic

Rock Bridge Bruins

Rock Bridge Bruins after scoring

Carthage Tigers (24-5) – 0
Rock Bridge Bruins (25-5) – 1
A goal in the 52nd minute from a corner kick sends the Rock Bridge Bruins to the State Final 4 next weekend. The decisive moment came following a strong start to the second half by the Tigers who came out strong and forced the play much like they were able to do during the first 15 minutes of the first half. Unfortunately the Achilles heel this year has been defending set pieces and the Bruin’s goal was a classic example. The ball went beyond the six yard box on the far side where defender (#17) was able to wait for the ball as he was unmarked. He hit a header into the six yard box where #10 was able to react to the ball and redirect it as he was unmarked as well. That was all that was needed to ensure that the boys team would match the girls performance last Spring – the Lady Bruin’s defeated the Nixa Eagles in the Girls Quarterfinals last May.

The Tiger’s lose two senior starters, central midfielder Mark Navarette and forward Joe Curti, both key performers on this squad that set new standards for the Class 3 Tigers. They will thus return 9 starters plus a bevy of experienced back ups in 2011.

Emily Jordan’s Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers Open NCAA D3 Tourney Play Today

Emily Jordan, Concordia-Moorhead (2013)

Emily Jordan, Concordia-Moorhead (2013)

From the Concordia website – The Cobber’s will play at their “home away from home” for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend. The Cobbers will play Northwestern (Minn.) at Macalester on Friday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. in the opening round of the national playoffs. Last year Concordia advanced to the Sweet 16 of the tournament after winning both their opening round games at Macalester.

The winner of the Concordia/Northwestern match-up will square off against the winner of the Macalester/UW-Stevens Point game on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. All games can be watched online

Sophomore Emily Jordan, Glendale 2009 and Springfield SC, played in 5 games for the Cobber’s this season, getting two shots off. Four of the games came during Conference play as she overcame early season tendonitis. She plays as a defensive midfielder behind a senior starter.

The Cobbers earned their fourth trip to the NCAA playoffs by winning the MIAC Tournament title on Saturday. Concordia is 11-4-4 on the season and finished the MIAC regular season by posting a 7-2-2 mark. CC is 2-3 in their previous three national tournament appearances.

Northwestern is making their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament after upsetting St. Scholastica in the UMAC playoff championship game. The Eagles are 13-8 on the season and have won six of their last seven games. Northwestern beat Bethany Lutheran 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals of their conference tournament before edging St. Scholastica 1-0 in the championship game.

MLS Conference Final Saturday – Rapids vs Earthquakes

From MLS Soccer – On Saturday, when Colorado host San Jose in the Eastern Conference Championship (8:30 p.m. CT, FSC), eyes will be on the Rapids’ dynamic duo of Conor Casey and Omar Cummings.

But it could be another pair, one brewing far less longer than the three years Casey and Cummings have been together, that could deliver a surprise. The Earthquakes’ Geovanni and Eduardo have only been on the same team for two-and-a-half months, but in their nine games together, and as Eduardo’s fitness has improved, San Jose’s Brazilian pair has looked a little more dangerous each match.

They may not have the 28 goals and 14 assists that Casey and Cummings have combined for – as a matter of fact, Geovanni’s has one goal and two assists while Eduardo has yet to tally either – but they’ve quickly and easily built a friendship and on-field understanding of each other that usually takes months, if not years, to develop.

MVC Soccer: Bears Face Cougars In Semifinal Friday

Thomas Vania, Missouri State Bears (2013)

Thomas Vania, Missouri State Bears (2013)

PEORIA, Ill. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (8-6-3, 4-1-2) pitched its second shutout of the season against the Evansville Purple Aces (7-10-3, 3-4-0) in a 2-0 win in the MVC Tournament first round on Wednesday afternoon in Peoria, Ill.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Riggs made three saves for his league-leading ninth shutout of the season. Riggs continued to be one of the best keepers in the country lowering his goals against average to a miniscule 0.66 on the campaign. The clean sheet was the fourth of Riggs’ career against UE in five matches.

The Bears got on the board in the 25th minute. David Buckenheimer picked up an errant Evansville pass near midfield and quickly sent it forward. A streaking Paul Paradise received the pass in stride and chipped it over the Purple Aces’ keeper from about 15 yards out. It was Paradise’s second goal of the year.

Junior Heath Melugin gave the Bears a cushion in the 82nd minute with his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Freshman Matt Bray dribbled the ball to the edge of the box and centered to an unmarked Melugin. He gathered in the pass and drilled a shot into the lower left corner of the net from about 15 yards out. The assist was Bray’s first collegiate point with MSU.

Evansville outshot the Bears 14 to nine, but were only able to direct three on net. Heath Melugin, Jordan Hoffman and Thomas Vania each had two shots to lead the Bears.

The Bears advance to Friday’s MVC Tournament semifinals for a rematch with SIU Edwardsville at 3:00 p.m. Missouri State battled the Cougars to a scoreless draw at Plaster Field last Saturday, the first shutout of SIUE in team history. The winner will advance to Sunday’s title match with an NCAA Tournament berth on the line.

Thank You

On Veteran’s Day I am thankful for my father who served for 30 years in the Army, including a tour of duty in Korea and Viet Nam, and my grandfather who served in France in World War 1, despite having only been in the US for a decade prior. Who are you thankful for?

From the Reuter’s photography blog comes this story – Souvenirs of War: Purple Hearts, Prosthetics and Phantom Pains full of images of war, both heart breaking and heart warming. It closed with the photo I’ve included above.

“I teared up…and didn’t cry again for 40 years.”
–Combat veteran Bob Ness after a close friend died next to him in Vietnam.

The story is a product of Larry Downing and Jason Reed, Reuters Senior Photographers assigned to coverage of the White House in Washington. Larry has worked as a news photographer in Washington for 33 years, covering both politics and news; while Australian-born Jason moved to Washington seven years ago, having worked across Asia with Reuters for 13 years. This multimedia project is a continuation of Larry’s 2009 story about Section 60 inside Arlington National Cemetery… this time focusing on wounded combat veterans. This project set out to bring life to the stories of returning U.S. combat servicemen and women for Veteran’s Day on November 11th. .
