A Time For Champions – Screening Sunday Nov 21st in STL

A Time For Champions movieA Time for Champions
Directed by Patrick Murphy, U.S., 2010, 58 min.
Show Date: Sun, Nov 21st at 1:00 PM
Location: Tivoli Theater, Delmar Loop
Tickets: Online

“A Time for Champions” gives a lively account of St. Louis’ decades-old love for the game of soccer through archival photos, classic game footage, and contemporary interviews. Popular among European immigrants, particularly those who were urban, working class, and Roman Catholic, soccer was fervently embraced in St. Louis. Within a generation, the city became a town of soccer rivalries, with parishes organizing teams through the Catholic Youth Council (CYC) and neighborhoods and sponsoring businesses fielding highly competitive sides. As exemplified by St. Louis University’s long string of national championships, the city’s aggressive, fast, and tough style set the standard for the way soccer would be played at the national level. Among the film’s many interview subjects are baseball legend Yogi Berra, sportscaster Bob Costas, U.S. Soccer Federation CEO Dan Flynn, and 1950 World Cup team members Frank Borghi, Harry Keough, and Walter Bahr.

Director Murphy will be in attendance.

Brinck Challenges Himself

Excellent story from the News-Leader on Nixa High School’s Niklas Brinck

Brinck, now a senior at Nixa High School, had just finished a fraction of a second from a state championship, placing second on a technicality in the 100-yard backstroke at last year’s state meet.

When the wall timer didn’t register Brinck’s touch at the conclusion of a race that ended in a photo finish, Rockhurst’s Jonathon Benson was ruled the winner — following more than an hour of deliberation — by virtue of hand-timed results.

Had the scenario played out a year or two before, Brinck admits, he may have “blown up” over the ruling. But Brinck kept his emotions in check until he took a seat back in Nixa’s team area, out of the spotlight.

Niklas’ behavior in a situation that was impacted by the officials was not to berate or blame them for the situation. Instead he has chosen to use it as motivation to not only return to the podium but to achieve the top spot this year. There is no guarantee that will happen but what a refreshing attitude.

How would you like your son’s and daughter’s to behave in that situation? Players, how about your parents, is this the approach they take?

MLS Conference Final: Galaxy Host FC Dallas Sunday

From MLS Soccer – FC Dallas have spent significant training time during the past week working on diagonal balls on set pieces to prepare for the lethal dead-ball capabilities of David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy. (Sunday, 8 p.m. CT, ESPN2/Deportes)

On Thursday, though, head coach Schellas Hyndman put them through a drill designed to play to one of their best proactive strengths: the counterattack.

Using his speediest attackers, Hyndman had his players run a quick-succession five-on-two exercise with the express intent of sharpening the team’s transition from the midfield on a turnover. With Dax McCarty quarterbacking from the middle, Eric Avila and Brek Shea on the flanks, and Atiba Harris and Bruno Guarda as the forwards, the quintet repeatedly advanced the ball on a quick release to simulate a counterattacking situation.

“What I wanted to do was to set the mentality in our mind that we’re a very good team when we break out and we go through transition or a counterattack,” explained Hyndman on Thursday. “I wanted them to understand there’s a few principles to that and that is that we look forward, we pass forward and we run forward.”

FC Dallas tied a league record by losing just four games this season, yet two of its losses came against the Galaxy.

As far as any advantage that might give the Galaxy, Coach Bruce Arena isn’t counting on it. “It’s going to be a tough game,” he said in a conference call Wednesday. “That’s what we learned from the two previous games this year, and we know the team is going to have to be ready to play in order to be successful.”

Missouri S&T Miners Reach NCAA 2nd Round

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – No. 21 Missouri S&T captured the school’s first ever NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament match on Friday with a 3-1 victory over No. 12 Ashland in the regional tournament hosted by Northern Kentucky.

In the other first round match, No. 4 Northern Kentucky rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory against Quincy. S&T and Northern Kentucky will meet in the regional final on Sunday. NKU owns two overtime victories against Missouri S&T this season, including a 2-1 triumph during the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament last week. Holder netted both winning goals in overtime against Missouri S&T.

Kyle Schraier and David Kekec scored goals in a span of 2:16 in the latter stages of the game Friday to give 21st-ranked Missouri S&T a 3-1 victory over No. 12 Ashland in their opening round contest in the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Tournament at Northern Kentucky University.

Schraier’s goal, his third of the season, came off an assist from Mario Calderon, came after he got a cross and put home a shot from seven yards away with 6:25 to go in regulation time. Moments later, Kekec took a cross from Schraier, wheeled and put home a shot from 10 yards out to extend the lead to two goals.

The Miners broke on top in the early moments of its first NCAA Division II Tournament game, as Trent Doerner scored 10:13 into play. Doerner took a pass from Jervis Atagana and hit a shot from about 15 yards into the upper right corner to put S&T in front. The Miners got three of the first four shots off in the contest and scored on the third one.

However, the Eagles tied the game a little over 17 minutes later after a Miner foul gave them a free kick opportunity from 19 yards away. Dollar converted the free kick to knot the score at one.

Ashland had a 6-4 advantage in shots in the opening half and had three shots on goal to S&T’s one. Pat McNamee made two saves in the first 45 minutes for the Miners.

S&T has had some good scoring chances in the second half, but Sam Shaffer has had two shots turned away by AU goalkeeper Justin Nolan and David Kekec also had a chance that Nolan stopped. The game went back-and-forth for much of the second half, until Schraier broke the tie with 6:25 remaining.

The back-to-back goals by Schraier and Kekec marked the seventh time this season that the Miners have scored twice in a span of 10 minutes or less and is the third-fastest consecutive tallies S&T has had on the year.

The Miners (11-5-3) outshot the Eagles 15-13 and had six shots on goal to AU’s four in the contest. McNamee finished the game with three saves.

MVC Soccer: Bears Fall in Semifinal to SIUe Cougars

Chad Johnson, Missouri State Bears (2011)

Chad Johnson, Missouri State Bears (2011)

PEORIA, Ill. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (8-7-3, 4-1-2) was unable to dig out of an early whole and fell 2-1 to SIU Edwardsville (10-5-2, 4-1-2) in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinals in Peoria, Ill. on Friday afternoon.

The Cougars’ Jordan Barnes redirected a Benny Jeffery shot past Alex Riggs to put SIUE up 1-0 in the 19th minute of play. SIUE added to the lead in the 31st minute when Jose Tamayo received a free kick a ball lifted over the defense that he ran onto at the far left before he drilled a shot from near the endline past Riggs.

Missouri State had a chance to get back in the match in the 36th minute. Jordan Hoffman was taken down in the penalty box by SIUE keeper Nick Colico. Gerard Barbero took the resulting penalty kick, but Colico saved the PK and the follow-up shot by Thomas Vania to keep the Bears off the board.

Senior Chad Johnson cut the Cougars’ lead in half in the 78th minute. Hoffman settled an SIUE clear and his attempted shot was blocked by the defense. Johnson collected the loose ball and drilled a low shot past Colico. The goal was Johnson’s first of the year.

A furious offensive attack by the Bears late in the match was unable to register an equalizer. MSU outshot the Cougars 10 to seven in the second half and 15 to 12 in the match. Dan Williams and Jared Gain tallied three shots apiece to lead the Bears.

Senior Alex Riggs made six saves in the match. Despite the two goals allowed, the Bears tied a school record with just 14 goals allowed on the season, a record first set in 1998.

Internazionale vs A.C. Milan Sunday

The Milan derby – Derby della Madonnina – with a role reversal. Internazionale has dominated in recent years, but its neighbor and fellow tenant at the city’s stadium is top of the Serie A today.

Sunday November 14th, 1:30 pm CT on Fox Soccer Channel

Both teams are peppered with injuries. Winning everything in Italy and Europe last season has taken a toll on Inter. Its Dutch play maker, Wesley Sneijder, was diagnosed with anemia after fainting at half time last weekend, his body run down. Yet he might play Sunday because Walter Samuel is out for the season and Maicon, the Brazilian right back considered the best in the business, is injured and Inter needs every available man.

Milan also bears wounds. Alexandre Pato injured a thigh on Wednesday, his replacement Pippo Inzaghi tore a knee ligament and meniscus, and Andrea Pirlo is struggling. The derby goes on, painfully.
