District 11 Final
#1 Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
#2 Glendale Falcons – 1 (2nd OT)
The game was won in the 98th minute when Roman Aldaiz buried a penalty kick, following the call against Jake Nedoma of the Kickapoo Chiefs who fouled Alec Martinez in the box.
Here’s the video from KSPR Sports
The Chief’s best opportunity was early as the the Falcon’s were adjusting to a new lineup and a likely hangover after Wednesday’s marathon match. Very early Devan Selsor beat his defender to an excellent thru ball but his shot from the far right was pushed wide by Reece Conner and cleared by the defense. It was midway through the 1st half when Glendale’s attack began to get into gear. The key difference throughout the game was the Falcon’s ability to get into the box and create opportunities while the Chief’s were relying on shots from outside the box or set pieces after Selsor’s early effort. They had two great opportunities that required acrobatic saves by Reece Conner, one in each half (see one in the video), but as the game wore on the strategy began to look less and less likely to succeed. Tyler Moses was called on to make several important saves (see the KSPR video above) to keep the game scoreless and both teams had players step up in key situations, including Nedoma who cleared a ball of the line following a Glendale corner kick. In the end, a quality play by Alec Martinez with his run and ability to beat defenders 1v1 created the opportunity the Falcon’s needed and they capitalized.
The Sectional game between Glendale and Carthage will be played at Carthage on Tuesday, probable start time is 6:00 pm. I’ve been saying Springfield, for that I apologize, too many groups to keep track of. The key – Even numbered districts host in even numbered years.
District 12 Final, 6:00 pm:#1 Carthage Tigers – 2
#2 Joplin Eagles – 0
The game winner was scored in the 57th minute by Joe Curti with the insurance goal in the 76th by Ismael Serratos. Well played by both sides. Carthage played their style and controlled the ball and work towards the goal from the offensive end. Joplin played the ball long and tried to score off of a counter attack.

no matter which team benefited, sad to see an official decide the outcome of such a big game. Good luck Glendale and represent us well.
Troy – the referee didn’t decide the outcome of this game. It’s a nice excuse, but it’s not the reason for the win or the loss. I’m going to have to keep repeating myself I guess – if you don’t like it, get out there and become a ref yourself like Bruce Immekus and Pete Beckett have done after their sons finished their high school careers. Either that or find some other way to offer something positive to the game, something your comment does not do.
I stayed positive about this. My only comment was that 22+ boys worked their tails off and it was a sad way to end a game. It does not matter who won, both teams deserved much better. If you think the game ended as it should have, we simply disagree.
Quote: “sad to see an official decide the outcome of such a big game.” That’s a positive statement? You were in the press box at the time of the call, correct? Approximately 70 yards away from the call. The ref was 10 yards away. You’re right. We disagree.
you are right, i am wrong. Keep up the great work with the website.
I may have to agree Troy on this one. The video clearly shows tugging by both players outside the box. Once they enter the box the kickapoo defender pokes the ball out and the glendale player falls. From a neutral party its sad to see the game and season end like that.
Jonathan, first thank you for not needing to be anonymous. You and Troy are to be commended for that. Now, to the issues at hand:
1. My disagreement with Troy is not on the call but the willingness to use a ref’s call as the reason for a loss. We don’t do it for players or coaches, why do folks seem to think that referees should be subjected to different rules.
2. As to the call itself, the ‘ball poke’ occurs after the foul. As you note, there is tugging outside the box which Martinez breaks free of. The foul occurs as the defender goes through Martinez, from the back, to get to the ball. The ref allowed the advantage until it was gone. Foul, in the box, PK, converted.
It all comes down to “in the discretion of the referee”. You’re doing well on the website steve. I check for updates weekly
Congrats to Carthage on the win!
If it’s a foul, then it is a foul no matter what the clock says. On the flip side, if a foul occurs and a referee does not call it because it is OT, they have also decided the outcome of the match.
KSPR did a nice job of capturing it on video.

Referees do not decide the outcome of matches. Did Nedoma’s foul decide the outcome of the game? No. It led to a penalty kick but the Falcon’s still had to convert the kick and that’s not a guarantee either. Just like his goal line save earlier in the match didn’t decide the outcome. It was, and is, a part of the game.

I have a pair of comments attacking the ref that I have not approved, not if they want to do it anonymously. We’ve already discussed it via the comments and I’m not interested in perpetuating that conversation. Springfield has no monopoly on feeling aggrieved about the referees. Either get over it or get out and do a better job yourself.

It’s funny how the person who run’s SGF soccer is not a springfield soccer fan but a Kickapoo soccer fan instead. Anyway, I would like to extend my apologies to him considering his favorite team lost. When the Glendale players were walking off the field, instead of congratulating or even just keeping to himself, he said, “Just wait till Tuesday against Carthage.” Ridiculous
Are you fully aware of what “the person who runs [I removed the apostrophe because there is no possessive of 'run'] SGF soccer” has actually done for the soccer community in this region?!
Steve has more than established himself as a fan of soccer, regardless of the teams playing. Of course, he’s going to cheer on the locals… which the last time I checked, includes Glendale soccer. I promise you that he can be seen at more games that most of the people that visit this site. To say that he’s strictly a Kickapoo fan is absolutely asinine.
Had it occurred to you, Glendale Fan, that Steve might have been commenting about how good the Glendale – Carthage match on Tuesday will actually be?
To everyone else that has commented on this article, keep in mind that a referee’s role is reactionary, he cannot call a foul until a foul has been committed. After viewing the video of the game, how can anyone dispute that a penalty worthy foul was committed? Instead of chastising the officials of the match, why don’t you recognize the role the Kickapoo defender had in the scenario?
turnerb10, I don’t know who you are but the only conversation I had with any Glendale players post-game was with a young man who while on the bench, and afterwards, asked me if I wanted to take his picture. My response – get on the pitch. As in earn your playing time and you’ll get coverage. Maybe less chatting with the press will improve your focus and attention to detail, rather than casting aspersions such as this.
Steve Olson. What you don’t realize is that turnerb 10 is an exceptional player. Due to a series of unfortunate events, he was unable to play. His ankle was throbbing for a week straight. He is a prodigy, but it’s a little hard to play in a constant state of agony. If you’d like my two cents, next time turner brown asks for a picture, take it and ask for his autograph. That combination would very easily make a great start for a 401k.
This is Turner Brown and I don’t want the comment made by turnerb10 to be seen as my comment because of the name similarity. That was in no way me. I greatly appreciate John *********’s words but, as hard as I may try, I don;t believe I can live up to that. I did ask for a picture acting like I was Roman but I was completely kidding considering I one was not Roman and two did not play a significant role in the game. Sorry if the remark came off in a bad way, I was only just excited by the win. Thanks
Steve,
I just want to say that I appreciate all you do, we don’t see you at Central games often, but I know tou try your best at covering all the soccer that goes on in Springfield. I am a great fan of the site, I probably check it 10 times a day.
About the refs, as a coach there are many times I don’t agree with the calls but that is their job and I have mine, and really it’s all part of the game, even pro refs make plenty of mistakes, and most of the time they did the right call, which we just don’t happen to like. Again, thank you Steve for all you do, and I love the site, it’s amazing how soccer is growing in the area!
Good luck to both Carthage and Glendale, should be a very exciting game!
