Missouri State Bears Soccer Host Evansville Aces Wednesday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (4-5-2, 2-0-1) will continue their longest home stand in three years when Evansville (5-7-1, 1-2-0) comes to town on Wednesday evening. The Bears and Purple Aces will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at Plaster Field.

Last season, Missouri State faced Evansville on three occasions. The Bears won both regular season matches, 1-0, including the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title-clinching match on November 4. But the Purple Aces rebounded and snuck past the Bears in the MVC Tournament semis with a 2-1 overtime win.

The Bears are currently riding a 10-game unbeaten streak in regular season conference play dating back to October 7, 2009. Missouri State kept the streak alive with a penalty kick goal in the 89th minute of Saturday’s match with Drake. The Bears sit tied atop the MVC standings at 2-0-1.

Evansville was chosen as the preseason conference favorite, but at 1-2-0 in the MVC so far this season, the Purple Aces are mired in the bottom half of the conference standings.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Riggs has recorded the decision in each match of the Bears’ streak. He owns a 0.84 goals against average, the best mark among full-time Valley starting keepers. Heath Melugin leads the Bears’ offense with four goals this season. He scored the lone Missouri State goal in the MVC Tournament against Evansville last season.

“This is going to be a very big game for both teams,” said head coach Jon Leamy. “We need to put together 90 minutes of good effort and good play and hopefully we’ll get some points.”

Missouri State will continue the home stand with nonconference foe Memphis on Tuesday, October 26, and conference rival Bradley on Saturday, October 30. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.

MLS Playoffs Contenders Identified With One Week Remaining

2010 MLS Cup logoWith the KC Wizards loss last weekend, they fell out of contention for a playoff spot this season. The standings as of today are listed below with all four of the Wild Card spots going to Western Conference teams, only New York and Columbus will represent the Eastern Conference. The final standings remain unclear with the LA Galaxy battling to remain atop.

CARSON, Calif. – With one game left in the 2010 MLS regular season, the LA Galaxy’s path toward MLS Cup is still unclear. The Galaxy close out the season Sunday against FC Dallas at the Home Depot Center. The outcome of that game could make LA the Western Conference champs and Supporters’ Shield holders, or it could see them fall to second place and face the prospect of playing a potential conference final on the road.

“We still control our own destiny,” Galaxy captain Landon Donovan said. “Next weekend means everything.”

The MLS Power Rankings consider Real Salt Lake to be the best team at this stage – Ned Grabavoy’s goal tells you all you need to know: Everyone contributes. That’s why RSL are the best in MLS.

Eddie Horn Gets Win 400

Eddie Horn, Jeff City Jays, Wins 400th game

Eddie Horn, Jeff City Jays, Wins 400th game

With a win against the Camdenton Lakers on October 14th, Head Coach Eddie Horn earned his 400th win as the Head Coach of the Jefferson City Jays. That puts him at the top outside of the St Louis and Kansas City coaches. Not certain why his information isn’t included in the MO Soccer Coaches records list but I’m digging into it. Coaches self submit the info and I have to thank Matt Stacey for the heads up on this one (Matt is Eddie’s assistant on the Boy’s side and Head Coach for the Girls program at Jeff City).

The Jay’s overall Record this season is 12 – 6 – 1 and Eddie won his 401st game when the boys beat Blue Valley Northwest in PK’s during the annual Art Firley Shootout at Jeff City. They play #12 ranked Rock Bridge tonight in a game that probably determines the #1 seed in District 9 with Rock Bridge the favorites. Jeff City moved up to #14 in the most recent polls after losing a pair of close games to CBC and SLUH in St Louis.

Congrats to Coach Horn. That’s him on the far right, back row, looking as young as his players in this shot.

Oct 18th – Glendale Raises The Bar

Greenwood Stadium Field at Cooper Soccer Complex

Glendale Falcons – 4
Nixa Eagles – 0
Tough game for the Eagle’s tonight as the Falcon’s had an answer for everything the visitor’s tried. Glendale senior Alec Martinez gave the Falcon’s the lead in the 21st when he won a 50/50 challenge with Nixa keeper Mason Young, running onto a ball sent in from Austin Hart and slipping the ball past the on-rushing keeper before slotting his shot into an empty net.

KOLR10 has the first Glendale goal, catch it on their 10 pm broadcast. I’ve got Photos

The game was entertaining, with both teams focused on displaying their skills, but it lacked intensity in the words of a long-time observer of the game. My response to that comment was that this was the intense version of both teams. That assessment probably speaks as much to the style of play both of these teams exhibit as it does to the relative youth represented on each team. With Districts less than two weeks away (voting happens Wednesday for District 11) the question is whether a team in the District will separate itself from the pack with the season on the line.

For Nixa, the critical element is the same issue it has faced all season. The Eagle’s are not going to win by scoring bunches of goals and more importantly, need to find a running partner for KhaiUyen Huynh, someone willing to shoot the ball. I nominate Robert Neathery. Nixa is 5-3 in games decided by one goal with losses to Kickapoo and Carthage (twice) while beating Kickapoo by the same score recently. However, when pressured tonight, the game ended up resembling a Brett Favre game with the Eagle’s trying to win the game with a single pass instead of making the simple pass.

Glendale feasted on that behavior in the second half with the second and third goal coming as a direct result of the counter-attack. The first came as a Nixa midfielder was unable to put enough on his pass to get it to his teammate 10 ft away. The Falcon defender stepped in front and sent a pass down the right side that Austin Hart took into the box where he was tripped as the Eagle’s defender attempted to react to the attack. The resultant PK gave Glendale a 2-0 lead. Soon afterwards, it was center midfielder Joe Aubuchon who stepped in front of a pass at midfield and send a beautiful thru ball into space that Hart ran onto, keeping his defender on his back, before slotting his shot to the far post as he entered the box. Much better than he showed against Rolla when he had three shots in the box blocked, and the type of result the rest of the District has to anticipate. The final goal came late in the game as Martinez, who covered the entire pitch tonight in leading the Falcons, buried a 25 yard shot into the upper 90 that drew gasps from the crowd.

Soccer America Looks At RPI

Check out the story on the first RPI report from the NCAA – Akron, the No. 1 team in the Soccer America Men’s Top 25 every week this season, is first in the initial Men’s Division I RPI index the NCAA released Tuesday.

The RPI — Ratings Percentage Index — is the most important of the criteria the NCAA uses to determine the 48-team field for the NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament. The RPI is a mathematical formula designed to objectively compare results and strength of schedule.

The highest ranked teams that did not make the RPI Top 25 are No. 3 Virginia (29 in the RPI rankings), No. 6 Connecticut (27) and No. 9 UC Irvine (42).

Mizzou vs Texas A&M on ESPNU October 17th

You can catch the Lady Tiger’s live on TV Sunday afternoon as ESPNU visits Walton Soccer Stadium to broadcast the game against Texas A&M. Game time is 4pm.

The Lady Aggie’s are ranked #10 in the country, with an overall 11-3 record, 4-1 in the BIG 12 (when I wrote this Tue night). The team features one of the most dynamic attacking players in the country, Ft Zumwalt West alum Alyssa Mautz. She was tabbed Metro Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 … Earned State Player of the Year honors as a senior … Helped team to state championship in senior season … Netted 133 goals in career, the fifth-most in Missouri girls’ soccer history

The Lady Tigers are two-time Big 12 regular season champions but were not invited to the NCAA tournament last year so this is a key game from a strength of schedule standpoint.
