CHICAGO (Oct. 13, 2010) – U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage has
named 20 players to the roster for the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifying tournament, being held in Cancún, Mexico, from Oct. 28-Nov. 8.
Just seven players on the roster have previous Women’s World Cup qualifying experience, led by Kristine Lilly, who is the USA’s all-time leader in qualifying appearances with 14 during her illustrious career. Lilly has been a part of each of the previous four U.S. squads that qualified for Women’s World Cups and will be the only player in CONCACAF history to appear in all five Women’s World Cup qualifying tournaments.
The team includes Becky Sauerbrunn (Washington Freedom) Sauerbrunn grew up playing for J.B. Marine Soccer club, leading her team to four state cup titles and the 2000 regional championship. In high school at Ladue, she was a two-time Parade All-American, and 2003 Gatorade Player of the Year. She was #3 draft choice in the 2008 WPS draft, going to the Washington Freedom from Virginia. Becky was a member of the U-21 National Team and competed for the United States at the 2004 U-19 World Championships and played every minute of each of the six games the U.S. played. She also represented the United States at the U-16 and U-19 levels, serving as captain of both squads
The United States will open its tournament on Oct. 28 against Haiti, face Guatemala on Oct. 30 and finish Group B play against Costa Rica on Nov. 1. All the USA’s group matches will kick off at 7:30 p.m. local time. The matches on Oct. 28 and Oct. 30 are at 8:30 p.m. ET, but as Mexico falls back to Standard Time on Oct. 31 (and the USA does not change until Nov. 7), the USA’s match on Nov. 1 against Costa Rica will kick off at 9:30 p.m. ET.
After round-robin play within the groups, the top two teams in each group will cross over for the all-important semifinals on Nov. 5 at Estadio Beto Ávila, with the first-place team in Group A facing the second place team from Group B and vice-versa. The championship game and third-place match will be played on Nov. 8 at Estadio Quintana Roo.
