One of the staples of fall and the primary fundraiser for DU’s sports programs, the ninth annual Drury Athletics Auction, will make its debut in the new O’Reilly Family Event Center this coming Saturday night.

The auction will once again feature more than 700 items of both the silent auction and live auction variety on an evening that begins with the doors opening at 5 p.m. as the event moves to the new $13.5 million O’Reilly Family Event Center for the first time.

Tickets are $20 for individuals or $35 per couple, but DU boosters are again encouraged to purchase one of the popular “Cash Bash” raffle tickets as their means of entry at the door. One $50 “Cash Bash” ticket entitles the holder to two free admissions to the auction in addition to putting them in the hopper to win up to $5,000 in cash prizes drawn throughout the evening.

One item that is available includes a signed Thierry Henry Red Bull NY jersey, donated by Tim Ream. Tim is a starting defender for the MLS Eastern Conference leaders, a 2010 graduate of SLU and older brother of Logan Ream, a freshman on the Drury Panther’s soccer team.

Here’s the Auction catalog of available items For more information on the auction, please contact J.J. Carney at (417) 873-7265 or by e-mail at jcarney@drury.edu.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (5-5-2, 3-0-1) continued its runs through Missouri Valley Conference play with a convincing 3-0 shutout over Evansville (5-8-1, 1-3-0) at Plaster Field Wednesday night. The win keeps the Bears atop the conference standings and extends their regular season conference play unbeaten streak to 11 matches.

Junior Gerard Barbero converted his second penalty kick in as many matches to put the Bears ahead in the 24th minute. Fellow junior Jordan Hoffman was taken down in the box to set up the penalty kick. OLE’s NOTE: the play began with a free kick just inside the offensive half. Gerard Barbaro put the ball to the far post on the edge of the six yard box and Heath Melugin won the battle with the keeper. The ball bounced near the penalty spot and Hoffman was first to the ball and as he turned inside, drew the foul.

The two squads battled back-and-forth the remainder of the half and Evansville ended up outshooting MSU seven to five at the break. The Purple Aces continued to press late into the second half, but still trailed 1-0.

In the 84th minute, senior Chad Johnson picked up a loose ball and dribbled into the box against the Evansville defender. At the last minute, he passed the ball to a streaking Heath Melugin, who beat the Aces keeper for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.

Missouri State would tack on another goal in the 90th minute when Hoffman picked off a defensive pass and walked in alone and buried the Bears’ third goal of the night. “Getting that first goal was huge for us,” said head coach Jon Leamy. “The goals haven’t come easy for us this season, so it was nice to see us finish some of those chances tonight.”

Senior goalkeeper Alex Riggs registered five saves in the shutout. It was his fifth shutout of the season and drops his goals against average to 0.77 on the season. “He (Alex Riggs) is playing really well right now,” commented Leamy after the shutout. “He has great composure back there and he just puts this team on his back.”

Missouri State will continue the home stand with its final nonconference opponent, Memphis, on Tuesday, October 26. The Bears will cap the home stand with conference rival Bradley on Saturday, October 30. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.

Missouri Elite FC U14 Girls Represent At Missouri State Cup

Missouri Elite FC - U14 Girls at Missouri State Cup 2010

Missouri Elite FC - U14 Girls at Missouri State Cup 2010

I was hoping for more detail but it’s time to get this posted – the only Girls team to represent Southwest Missouri last Summer at the Missouri State Cup were the Missouri Elite FC U14 girls team, pictured above.

We went 1-2 but all games were close. It was a great showing for us.

Lost to Lou Fusz 4-0….down 2-0 at half then came out after a 1.5 hour rain delay looking to even it up and just couldn’t hit the net and broke down in back.

Lost to SLSGSC-Portugal 3-1…great game. Went up 1-0, tied at half 1-1 and well fought to the end where they got a quick game winner and then a bogus offsides call. They ended up being our group winner.

Beat SLSGSC-USA 3-1….finally figured out how to run with the best and played phenominal.

Congratulations on taking on the challenge ladies, I’m looking forward to tracking your development in the coming years!

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Saint Louis sophomore midfielder Devon Newport (Springfield, Mo./Glendale) netted his first career goal as the Billikens ousted host George Washington 1-0 Sunday in Atlantic 10 Conference men’s soccer action at Mount Vernon Field.

The Billikens improve to 4-5-2 overall and 2-2-0 in A-10. Next week, they travel to No. 23 Charlotte for a key Friday night A-10 matchup. Game time is set for 6 p.m. (CT). George Washington falls to 2-10-0 and 0-3-0 in the league.

Newport put the Billikens on the board at 16:45. Sophomore Alex Sweetin played a ball into the box that Newport managed to bury past George Washington keeper Brendan Lafferty. It was Newport’s first career tally and Sweetin’s team-leading third assist.

“We had a lot to play for today,” SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. “The guys responded well after a disappointing loss Friday night. On the goal, Alex did a great job getting on the end of a ball and squared it across to Devin, who didn’t quit on the play. As the game went on we had several chances to put the game away but we were unable to. The guys did a good job managing the rest of the match and we got a good result.”
