Timeout! What Do You Mean There Are No Timeouts?!!

From the National Soccer Coaches Association of America comes this article Ten Reasons to Not Coach the Player in Possession – Part 1 by Roy Dunshee, Maryland State Technical Coordinator for the NSCAA and President of United Soccer Coaching, LLC.

“To not do something for someone who can and should do it for themselves is an act of love.” – John Wooden

Among the many negative side effects from overbearing coaches is the arrested development of player creativity. Yet it is not just the stereotypical loudmouth who inhibits creativity by attempting to orchestrate play. Nearly all youth coaches (present company included) are guilty in some way of making decisions for our players that they can and should make for themselves. Coaches who dictate play by directing the player in possession ensure that players never get to think for themselves and therefore never develop the skill so elemental to our sport; decision making.

Excellent article that ties into the earlier discussion on the emphasis on winning at an early age and how it inhibits player development. Same issues here – the beauty of soccer is the lack of timeouts and the opportunity as a player to learn to understand the flow of the game and apply lessons learned. If you think the kids are listening, it’s only because you control the decision to who plays, not how well they play. If you want them to learn and become better players, consider your training program and what you are doing to prepare them for games. Then sit back and evaluate how well they applied the lessons YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for providing.

MVC Soccer: Bears Beat Creighton In OT

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State women’s soccer team (9-5-2, 3-1-1) handed Creighton (12-3-2, 4-1-0) its first conference loss and kept their title hopes alive with a 2-1 overtime win Friday night at Plaster Field. The win moves the Bears to within two points of Creighton in the standings and makes next week’s regular season finale a very important match.

The Bears fell behind in the 16th minute when Macy Mauer chipped a ball over the defense and Andrea Zuniga tipped it past Missouri State goalkeeper Jessica Teahan. Missouri State evened the score just before halftime. In the 45th minute, senior Sarah Linsin picked off a Creighton clearing attempt and drilled a shot from 25 yards out. It was her second goal of the year, a career high for Linsin.

A physical second half put the Bluejays down a player in the 61st minute. But Missouri State was unable to capitalize on the advantage the remainder of regulation and the teams headed to overtime.

In the 94th minute, senior Jordan Reppell took a free kick from near midfield. Her drive found the head of sophomore Michelle Sommer, who beat the defender and the goalkeeper to complete the comeback and give the Bears the win. It was Sommer’s third goal of the season.

“I was determined,” said Sommer, regarding the game-winning goal. “We had been wearing them down in the second half and took advantage of the chance in overtime.”

The Bears defense stepped up to the challenge against the powerful Bluejays offense. Creighton was only able to muster seven shots in the match and just one on net. “Our defense was solid and has been all year,” continued Sommer. “They will be a factor come tournament time.” Sommer led all Bears with four of Missouri State’s 14 shots. Linsin, Katelyn Frederickson and Tiffany Laughlin tallied two shots apiece.

Missouri State will finish out the regular season at home with senior night on Thursday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. against Evansville.

Last years game, which debuted “Launch A Legacy”, saw Missouri State edge Drake 3-2 in overtime before 1,075 attendees, the fourth-largest crowd in Missouri State men’s soccer history. Also featured were a European-style walkout with players from both teams accompanied by area youth soccer participants, a bagpiper, and a balloon launch.
