Sarah Linsin Named MVC Defensive Player of the Week, Bears Chasing Title Thursday!

Sarah Linsin (#4), Missouri State (2011)

From the MVC website: Defensive Player of the Week: Sarah Linsin, Missouri State, D, Sr., Stilwell, Kan.

Linsin has been a stalwart on the Bears’ backline all season. She helped an MSU defense that shut down Creighton’s Brittney Neumann, who leads the league in shots and points. Linsin aided a Bears’ defense that allowed just seven shots to the Bluejays, who were averaging nearly 16 per match coming in to Friday’s game. Linsin also scored just before halftime to knot the score at 1-1. She picked off a clearing attempt by Creighton and drilled a shot from 25 yards out for her second goal of the season. She recorded her career-high second goal of the year from her defensive position in the win over Creighton. Both of her goals have come in the last minute of play before halftime.

The regular-season schedule ends Thursday, Oct. 28 with the Bear’s hosting Evansville at Plaster Stadium, game time is 7:00 pm. Opening-round tournament games are this Sunday.

Missouri State’s highest-ever regular-season finish was last year (2nd place). The Bears can finish no worse than third and have done that five previous seasons. Missouri State, currently tied with ISU for second place, can earn the title outright with a win Thursday night against Evansville and a CU-ISU draw.

Ozark Conference – Kickapoo Are Undefeated Champions

Glendale Falcons – 1
Kickapoo Chiefs – 2
The Chief’s came out fast tonight and taking advantage of the strong wind, Turner Adams sent a free kick into the box in the fifth minute that while initially parried, fell to Josh McCutcheon who was then taken down before he could shoot. Senior Nate Lavoy buried the resulting penalty kick for the early lead.

Glendale finally broke through midway through the second half soon after sophomore Evan Garrad was moved up into the midfield from his outside back position. Garrad won a ball, pushed it left and Roman Aldaiz then slotted a ball to jr Austin Hart, who had his back to the goal and was just inside the penalty area. Hart was able to collect the ball and make a quick turn to his left towards the center of the box before getting off a quick shot that stayed low and settled into the far side netting to knot the score.

The game-winner was scored by Devan Selsor as the Chief’s mounted one of their patented counter-attacks. The more active side all evening, a ball won deep in their end was quickly sent forward and Selsor’s hard work got him into the attack down the left side. He was rewarded for his effort and as he carried the ball into the left side of the box, he unleashed a shot the found the far side netting, sending the Chief’s fan’s into hysteria (below).

The Chief’s finish 9-0 in the Ozark Conference and reclaim the Ozark Conference title, which the Camdenton Laker’s snatched last year while ending the Chief’s four year streak. The Chief’s play this evening erased any doubts about whether they deserved the #1 seed in the upcoming District 11 playoffs. Unless Glendale can find some energy and attitude worthy of the derby, it’s likely to be Kickapoo vs Carthage in the Sectional game on November 9th. That makes tomorrow’s game against the visiting Tiger’s even more interesting now. Come out and support the Kicking for A Cure double-header tomorrow at Kickapoo that includes a game between Republic and Webb City. Arrive early for the best seats!

GLVC Soccer: Panthers Win, Grab 5th Seed In Tourney

Senior Grant Bowden’s header goal (video below) in the 26th minute Sunday afternoon gave Drury all it needed to pull out a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference soccer victory over Saint Joseph’s on Senior Day at Harrison Stadium in The Curry Family Sports Complex.

Bowden’s second goal of the season helped the Panthers to improve to 10-6 overall and 9-5 in the GLVC as they secured their spot in the eight-team GLVC Tournament field which opens play on Oct. 31. Drury will be the No. 5 seed and visit No. 4 Quincy next Sunday at a time to be determined. Saint Joseph’s fell to 8-7-1 and 6-7-1.

DU junior keeper Stephen Conner picked up his seventh shutout of the season and school-record 21st of his career for the Panthers. Drury outshot the visiting Pumas 14-4 on a day when the program recognized 12 seniors in post-game ceremonies for their contributions in their final home game of the season – Blake Wilson, Ben Taylor, Peter Higgins, Mason North, Danny Collins, Alex Palmer, Connor McClellan, Adam Peterson, Micah Whorton, Taylor Stacy, David Emnett and Bowden.

The Panthers will close out the regular season with a non-conference match at Harding on Tuesday in Searcy, Ark. The Panthers travel to No. 4 seed Quincy (10-4-2) for a first round GLVC Tourney game next Sunday. Drury (10-6-0) finished as the No. 5 seed.

On Senior Day, Drury and Saint Joseph’s battled to a 0-0 draw in the Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s soccer regular season finale at Harrison Stadium on Sunday … but it was enough to get the Panthers into the league’s post-season tournament.

Drury (8-7-2 overall, 6-6-2 in the GLVC) clinched the No. 8 seed in the GLVC post-season tournament and will visit top-seed Northern Kentucky in Highland Heights, Kentucky next Sunday (Oct. 31) in the first round at a time to be announced.

Saint Joseph’s is now 1-13-2 overall and 1-12-1 in the GLVC.

While Drury took time in pre-game ceremonies to honor its six seniors – Jessie Sanderson, Sarah Colvin-Fritz, Meredith Hall, Kelsy Long, Alyssa Allcorn and Mandi Little – it was a particularly frustrating afternoon afterward for the Panthers.

Total domination and nothing but a tie to show for it.

Drury outshot the Pumas 25-4 in the contest, including 7-0 over the two overtime periods, but couldn’t find the back of the net as Saint Joseph’s keeper Sarah Croskrey came up with nine saves.

Sanderson had two saves in posting her 37th career shutout, a DU record.

The Panthers finish the regular season with a non-conference match at Harding in Searcy, Ark., on Tuesday.
