Bryce Collier (Hillcrest) and Trevor Pedigo (Kickapoo), Crowder Roughriders (2011)
It’s playoff time across many of the leagues and that includes the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). For Missouri, that means the Region 16 playoffs. Region 16 is made up of the 8 programs within the State of Missouri, including the Crowder Roughriders, based in Neosho (the entire list is below). After finishing the regular season 10-6, the Crowder College Roughriders earned the No. 1 seed in the Region XVI tournament, earning them a home game against Maple Woods, who had defeated Crowder 3-0 in Neosho two weeks earlier.
Maple Woods and Crowder College are no strangers when it comes to the Region XVI soccer playoffs. Two years ago, the Roughriders eliminated Maple Woods from the postseason in the quarterfinal round, and last year the Monarchs put an end to Crowder’s second season of competition in the semifinal round in St. Louis.
A first-half goal from Edson Frasnelli gave the Roughriders the lead at 1-0, and then a penalty kick goal off the boot of Crowder leading scorer Bryce Collier with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation sealed the 2-0 shutout. The Roughriders will make their second-consecutive trip to the Final Four and will play a semifinal game in the Region XVI tournament Friday in St. Louis. If they win, the championship game will be played Sunday in the Gateway City.
The Roughriders will face St. Charles Community College at 2 p.m. Friday on the campus of St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley. The Roughriders and St. Charles Community College met once this season, with Crowder picking up a 3-1 victory on Oct. 3.
St. Charles advanced in the regional tournament with a 1-0 victory over St. Louis Community College-Forest Park in the quarterfinal round Saturday. The Cougars are led by Jared Ray’s six goals and eight assists for 20 points. Robert Bajier can also put the ball in the net with four goals and three assists.
Bryce Collier ranks as Crowder’s leading scorer with 11 goals and five assists for 27 points. Tarcisio Yamamoto (#12, freshman from San Paulo, Brazil) has six goals and three assists, and Giafranco Panto (#21, freshman from Cabudare, Venezuela) has six goals and two assists for the Roughriders.
I will be in attendance at the game Friday so look for my report and photos from the game. I did some reporting of my own as well and have this to add to the story, courtesy of Roughrider’s Coach Brad Smith who has led the program the entire three years of existence. I asked him to tell me about the roles that Bryce (Hillcrest 2009/Springfield SC) and teammate Trevor Pedigo (Kickapoo 2009/Springfield SC) have played this year:
Bryce had 6 goals and 1 assist as a freshman. With his 11 goals and 5 assists this season, he is now the season and career holder of goals, assists and total points.
Bryce has been outstanding for us. He has matured as a player and now looks at himself as the leader of the team. He has also accepted his role as an outside midfielder and has become very difficult to defend.
Trevor is the unquestioned leader of our defense. He has improved tremendously with quality playing time and has developed into a quality central defender. He exudes confidence and is able to organize and direct our defense which has a school record of six shutouts this year. Previous was 3 last year.
As noted, the team plays in the semifinals for the second straight year on Friday. Look for photos and a story on this website. A win moves the Roughriders to the Finals on Sunday and the winner goes on to face the Region 24 Champion (State of Illinois) on November 6, 2010 at Region 24 winner. The District winner becomes a quarterfinalist in the National Championship which is being held November 18-21 at Tyler Junior College, Tyler, Texas. Last year’s representative was Barton County CC (Kansas), a team the Roughriders beat 2-1 in two OT’s earlier this year

Matt Pickens, Colorado Rapids (Missouri State 2003) by Garrett Ellwood/Getty Images
Matt Pickens (Missouri State 2003) and his Colorado Rapids teammates help open the Major League Soccer playoffs on Thursday evening when they host the Columbus Crew in the 1st Leg of a home and away Quarterfinal.
Thursday Oct 28 8 pm CT
Dick’s Sporting Goods Park
ESPN2
From MLS – Matt Pickens has been solid in goal for the Colorado Rapids all season. His 1.10 goals-against average is good for sixth best in the league, and his seven shutouts are a respectable total. One of those shutouts came against the Columbus Crew, the Rapids’ opponents in the Eastern Conference semifinals. That was a 1-0 win at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
But in their other meeting this season, Pickens was beaten three times in a 3-1 loss at Crew Stadium. It was one of only two times all season that Pickens conceded three goals in a game. The other time? Against the New York Red Bulls, the Eastern Conference winners and the Rapids’ possible opponents in the next round. The Rapids lost 3-1 to the New York at Red Bull Arena.
Soccer America has Colorado ranked 7th of the eight teams – 7. Colorado (10-1). None of the darkhorses can be counted out, and the Rapids are potent because of a solid midfield core (Jeff Larentowicz, Pablo Mastroeni) and an array of attacking talents (Omar Cummings, Conor Casey, Macoumba Kandji, Jamie Smith, Brian Mullan). Can their defense measure up?”>

And on a final note – In his final game before retirement, the Chicago Fire’s Brian McBride — after a long, successful career in MLS, with the U.S. national team and in the English Premier League — scored his 80th MLS goal with a back-heel in last weekend’s Chicago win over Chivas USA. McBride’s brilliant finish came off a pass from Freddie Ljungberg in the 40th minute. McBride, who played in three World Cups (1998, 2002, 2006) and scored in two of them, left the field in the 50th minute of Chicago’s 4-1 win.
With the Greenwood Blue Jay’s senior recognition this evening comes a look back to when the boys were 3rd graders I guess (May 2001). Just a year before I moved here and I began covering the regional game four years later. Now they are counting the days before they leave the house and head off to college.
As someone noted on Facebook this week, the days are long and the years shorter. Enjoy it while you can!

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (6-5-2, 3-0-1) wrapped up the non-conference slate with a 2-0 shutout of Memphis (3-10-1) at Plaster Field on Tuesday night.
The Bears took the lead in the 12th minute on a nice combination of passes. David Buckenheimer centered the ball to Dan Williams at the top of the box. Williams one-touched the ball forward past the defenders where Heath Melugin ran on to it and beat the Tigers’ keeper. The goal was Melugin’s team-leading sixth of the year. NOTE: check OzarksFirst.com, they showed the goal on the 10pm news and it was a beautiful one-touch pass from freshman Dan Williams into Melugin, sending him in alone on the keeper (Williams is pictured from the Evansville game above)
Missouri State continued to control the ball and play the remainder of the half and were outshooting Memphis four to two at halftime.
The Bears doubled the lead in the 65th minute. Junior Gerard Barbero handled a throw-in on the far right side near the endline and Dan Williams picked up the attempted clearance, slipping it back to Barbaro on the touchline. From their Barbero found space and slotted a cross into the box where Eric Martin rose to meet it, heading the ball past Memphis’ keeper for his first goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Riggs was relatively untested in the shutout win. He made three saves, all in the second half. The shutout is Riggs’ sixth of the year and seventh for Missouri State. Paul Paradise led all Bears with three shots in the match. Martin added two for Missouri State.
“Memphis came out strong tonight and I think we weathered the storm early tonight,” stated head coach Jon Leamy. “We got into a rhythm and it was great to get the goals tonight.”
The Bears wrap up the current four-game home stand against conference rival Bradley on Saturday, October 30, at 7:00 p.m. Then a trip to No. 9 Creighton next Wednesday, November 3 awaits before Missouri State’s regular season finale against SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, November 6. The Bears’ 7:00 p.m. match with SIUE is the “Living Our Legacy” match to benefit the Ozarks Honor Flight.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T junior midfielder Melissa Young is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. Young helped the Lady Miners secure their first postseason appearance in school history as they claimed a pair of league victories over the weekend.
In Friday’s 3-0 win over visiting Saint Joseph’s, Young scored a pair of goals less than 30 seconds apart, including the game-winning tally. Young notched the game-winner in the 70th minute on an assist from Colleen Lewis. She added an insurance goal seconds later in the 71st minute by converting a Morgan Lockowitz feed.
For the week, Young tallied six points on the three goals and had both game-winning tallies.
The goals for Young were the first of the season for the junior. She now ranks second for the Miners in points with nine on three goals and three assists.
Missouri S&T (8-6) secured the school’s first winning season since 2000 and finished sixth in the league standings with the 8-6 conference mark. The Miners will be the No. 6 seed for the GLVC Tournament and visit Quincy in a GLVC Tournament quarterfinal on Sunday at Noon CT.
Missouri S&T finished 9-2-3 in GLVC play this year and on a percentage basis finished in a tie with Lewis and Northern Kentucky as the league champs. The Miners will be the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament – due to a loss to No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky last weekend – and will host Bellarmine next Sunday in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament.
The Miners , who earned their first regular season conference title in men’s soccer with Sunday’s win, will face the Knights at noon at the S&T Soccer Field. The teams played to a scoreless tie in Louisville on Oct. 17.

at KHS, Tiger’s struck for a goal early in the 2nd half. Haven’t heard final yet! Well, well. Looks like I should have stayed for the 2nd half rather than heading over to Missouri State where the Bears handled Memphis quite easily.
