St. Louis, Mo., September 14, 2010 – The Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team checked in at No. 18 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top-25 Poll, as announced Tuesday on the organization’s website. Washington University, which cracks the top-25 for the first time this season, is off to a 4-0-1 start to the year and coming off a pair of 2-0 home victories last weekend.

After finishing the 2009 campaign with a 9-7-3 overall record and scoring just 21 goals in 19 games, the Bears’ offense has come to life in 2010 while the defense continues to stifle opponents. Washington University has scored 14 goals in five games so far this year, while giving up just one goal all season.

Joplin graduate John Duncan has started all five games this season.

Brian McBride Announces Retirement

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – Chicago Fire forward Brian McBride fought through tears on September 3rd as he announced he will retire after the 2010 season, ending one of the most storied careers in American soccer history. McBride, 38, told the media that he has been in conversations with his family for more than a year on the decision, which ends a career that took from the early days of MLS to the English Premier League and back to MLS again, with a US record-tying three World Cup appearances sprinkled in between.

Commentary: Remember McBride as soccer royalty American fans love to debate how their players stack up, somehow managing to pit Donovan’s consistency against Tab Ramos’ natural talent from a different time, or wondering if John Harkes’ European success means any more than Brad Freidel setting up camp in England for more than a decade. There’s little argument McBride belongs in the conversation. He is, without a doubt, the best striker the US has ever produced, the country’s best player in the air and the most accomplished player in US history.

No other player has served as a regular captain with a club in the Premier League, something McBride did with aplomb at Fulham. Donovan and Clint Dempsey are the only other Americans to score in two World Cups, and ask both of those players about the one man who helped them get there, and you’re sure to get the same answer: McBride.

MLS players celebrate McBride’s legacy
Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena – who coached McBride with the US team in 2002 and 2006 and will coach against him Saturday night – reflected fondly on perhaps McBride’s signature moment, when he suffered a nasty gash to his face but played on during the Americans’ 1-1 draw against Italy in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup. “He was cut and he played 90 minutes, and he played an unbelievable role in allowing the US to get the point against Italy,” Arena said. “In that game, he was a warrior.”

Galaxy talk McBride
Seventy-two of McBride’s 95 national team caps and 24 of his 30 goals came during Arena’s tenure. He was the leading scorer at the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup, helping the Americans win the tournament for the first time since 1991 and showing a sign of things to come as he helped the U.S. to the quarterfinals of that year’s World Cup in South Korea, scoring the winning goals in victories over Portugal and Mexico.

Galaxy talk McBride part 2
Now the most recognizable face in American soccer, Landon Donovan was another player McBride helped through his formative years with the U.S. national team. The two suited up in the attack together 44 times from 2000-06 and played key roles in the American success during the 2002 World Cup, scoring the two goals that pushed the U.S. past Mexico and into the tournament quarterfinals.

“The biggest thing for me about Brian was watching the little things he did,” said Donovan. “Everybody sees the goals he scores, the way he holds the ball up, how strong he was. For me it was his example: every day eating right, hydrating properly, just being a good professional. He paid a lot of attention to the younger guys, helping us move along as players, showing us what it means to do this every day and making sure we understood none of this is a given. I’m glad I had the opportunity to be around him and learn from his example.”

McBride, who played prep soccer at Buffalo Grove HS in Arlington Heights (Chicago) IL, starred at St Louis University in the early 90′s where he holds all the career individual scoring marks; his 40 career assists and 72 career goals top the charts and is firmly entrenched as the Bills’ all-time leading scorer with 184 points.

Alec Martinez, Glendale (2011) celebrates with fans after game-tying goal

Glendale Falcons – 3
Kickapoo Chiefs – 1
Alec Martinez had a coming out party tonight at the Greenwood Stadium Field. The senior midfielder came out in the second half this evening and set a stake in the ground, for his team and the region, as his creativity and skill opened up the game. A game that, other than a goal by the Chief’s in the 20th minute, didn’t bode well for the spectators or the players as neither team seemed capable of holding the ball for more than two passes during the first half.

The Chief’s took the lead in the 20th minute on a goal by sophomore Turner Adams, who had come on only moments earlier. A corner kick, won after Nate Lavoy’s blistering shot was pushed wide by goalkeeper Reece Connor, was volleyed by Adam’s as he ran onto the ball and somehow redirected it to the far post. (VIDEO)

The score remained 1-0 until early in the second half when the Falcon’s came out in their attacking formation, featuring Martinez up top paired with junior Austin Hart. Three minutes in, Martinez ran onto a well placed ball from jr Sam Knetzer and sprinted into the left side of the box ahead of his defender. His gently lofted shot eluded the on-rushing keeper and settled into the far side netting, tying the game. Only two minutes later, Martinez created the next opportunity when he settled a ball near the penalty spot and as two defenders converged, sent senior transfer Joe Aubuchon (from Hickman) into the box with a cheeky little back heel. Aubuchon’s run created the opportunity and as the defender reacted to the run, Aubuchon was taken down and drew the penalty kick. He calmly stepped up and converted the kick, getting the game-winner in his first derby game.

Asked about his experience, and how it compared to the games between Hickman and Rockbridge in Columbia, Joe noted there was no comparison. The student support far exceeded anything he was used to and his smile told the rest of the story.

The Falcon’s got their final goal in the 70th when sophomore Nic Bauer found space to receive Martinez’s pass near the top of the box. Bauer turned as the defense was slow to react and his simple chip shot from 22 yards out floated just beyond the reach of the Kickapoo goalkeeper and settled into the back of the net. (VIDEO)

These two Class 3 District 11 opponents meet for the first time this season in a game at Greenwood Stadium Field at the Cooper Soccer Complex tonight. JV kicks off at 5pm, varsity at approximately 6:45 pm. The last time they met was in the District 11 Final where Ian Kennedy’s 76th minute goal broke the hearts of the Falcon Nation. The Chiefs went on to defeat the Carthage Tiger’s 1-0 in the Class 3 Sectional before falling to Columbia Hickman 0-1 when the Kewpies scored on a corner kick in the 77th minute.

The teams have had three common opponents this season. Kickapoo defeated Camdenton 3-0 at home on Sep 7th while defeating Park Hill 1-0 and losing to Park Hill South 1-2 last weekend. The Falcons defeated Camdenton 3-0 at home last night while also losing 1-2 to Park Hill South and drawing 0-0 with Park Hill last weekend.
