ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For the third consecutive season, the Missouri State women’s soccer team (4-3-1) and the Saint Louis Billikens (1-4-3) played to a double overtime scoreless draw on Friday night. It was the second consecutive time the two squads played a 0-0 tie at Morrison Stadium in St. Louis.
Junior goalkeeper Jessica Teahan saved all six shots she faced. Her best save of the night came in the 108th minute after a brief scramble in the box following a Billikens’ corner kick. The shutout was Teahan’s second of the season and the team’s fourth shutout of 2010.
Missouri State was able to hold SLU scoreless despite being outshot 17 to three in the match. Tiffany Laughlin had two shots for the Bears while Michelle Sommer added the other shot.
The Bears’ scoring drought continued against Saint Louis. Missouri State has not scored against the Billikens defense since 2005, marking five straight shutouts by SLU in the series.
“Jessica (Teahan) made a lot of good plays outside the box to disrupt chances by SLU,” said head coach Rob Brewer. “I am happy we got the shutout, but we would have liked to get the win as well.”
Missouri State will continue its four-game road trip with a stop at Lawrence, Kan., on Sunday, September 19, for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against the Jayhawks. The Bears will return home on Friday, October 1, at 7:00 p.m. against Indiana State.

Early-season pacesetters Atletico Madrid play host to reigning champions Barcelona Vicente Calderon this weekend.
Atletico are riding the crest of a wave at present having finished last season by winning the Europa League and reaching the final of the Copa del Rey and then starting the current campaign with a European Super Cup win over Inter Milan and back-to-back victories in La Liga.
Those two triumphs have left Quique Sanchez Flores’ side at the top of the Primera Division standings, level on six points with Valencia, and optimism will be growing in the Rojiblancos camp that they can push the big two of Real and Barca hard this season.
This weekend, therefore, offers Atletico the perfect chance to showcase their credentials with mighty Barca the visitors.
The two clubs have been involved in some epic battles in recent seasons, with the last seven league meetings between the two producing 39 goals.
Parkview Vikings – 4 Farmington Knights – 2
In the title game of the Viking Showdown, Junior Brian Otradovec opened the scoring this afternoon but the Knights quickly struck back to tie the game. Otradovec got what proved to be the game-winner late in the half after converting a PK, which he drew when he was fouled in the box.
The 2nd half opened with a flurry of Viking attacks (arrrgh, it’s Talk Like a Pirate Day). An early corner kick led to a Louis Taylor goal, scored on a header at the back post (VIDEO below). Midway through the half, Tanner Bennett was the recipient as another Otradovec run into the box box was initially blocked by the keeper but deflected to the left where Bennett tapped in at the far post.
Farmington has a strong attack but GK Evin Barber blunted several break aways with his courage and reflexes. The Knights finally broke through again with 9 min remaining when sr Pete Grindel, the primary danger boy for Farmington leaped to meet a cross from the right and head it back to the near side netting beyond Barber’s reach. A renewed attack threatened but the Vikings were just resilient enough to hold on fir the win. Not without some concern from the bench and some parental noise aimed at the refs.
In the end, the Vikings took a nice step forward in their development as they avoided another match with Carthage in earning the title. PHOTOS AVAILABLE AT THE BOTTOM, click on any individual photo to be taken to the Gallery to view and purchase.

Springfield Catholic – 3 Whitfield Warriors – 0
The Fightin’ Irish opened tournament play in St Louis this evening with a decisive win over the defending Class 1 champions. The last time these two teams played was in the Class 1 Final last November when the Warrior’s defeated Catholic 1-0 on a 12th minute goal.
Goals were scored by Mitch Moncada (2) and Evan Craig in the win.
Greenwood Blue Jays – 6 Hillcrest Hornets – 0
Greenwood Senior Stuart Beezley scored his 87th career goal today and broke the career scoring record of 86 goals (Chris Aiken GLS 2010/Emory University Soccer).
Goals were scored by Beezley, Flavin(Nick Hogan), Hawken Thieme, and in the 2nd half by Jack Hogan, Theime (Beezley) and Beezley.
Prior to Aiken’s record setting performance, the previous career scoring record held by GLS Asst. Coach John McQueary (GLS 1998/UMR Soccer 2002) John was a team mate with Stuart Beezley’s older brothers, Drew and Spencer, who together played on a total of four final four teams. Three of these Greenwood teams took 2nd place in Class 1-3A State soccer finals in the late nineties.
Drury Lady Panthers – 2 Northeastern State – 1
The Drury University women’s soccer team scored two second half goals to knock off the RiverHawks of Northeastern State 2-1 Friday afternoon at Curry Sports Complex/Harrison Stadium.
Two Panthers scored their first collegiate goals with freshman forward Lindsey Sprouse scoring at the 49 minute mark and sophomore midfielder Beth Schramka scoring at the 57:30 mark. Junior Hillary Cockrell assisted on both goals. The RiverHawks scored their goal on a penalty kick from Rachel Sordahl at the 74 minute mark.
“I thought the first 20 minutes of both halves we played very good and in the second half we came out really strong,” said head coach Alf Bilbao. “Overall it was a good win for us.”
Drury outshot Northeastern State thirteen to nine with both Cockrell and Kelly Gallagher each getting three for DU. Drury senior goalkeeper Jessie Sanderson recorded four saves and Northeastern State goalie Deb Hill posted eight.
The Panthers are 3-3-0 overall after last Sunday’s 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Illinois-Springfield on two goals from sophomore forward Katie Pritchard.
Northeastern State is 3-1-1 overall with wins over Missouri Southern (1-0), A & M International (4-0) and St. Mary’s (1-0) to go with a 1-1 tie against Northwest Missouri State. Rachel Sordal, a sophomore forward, is off to a quick start for the RiverHawks from Tahlequah, Okla., with four goals in four matches. Drury and NSU played last year in Tahlequah, with the Panthers coming home a 2-0 winner.
Drury will continue its homestand at 2:30 p.m., when Rockhurst visits Harrison for a GLVC matchup to be televised by Mediacom 22 on a tape-delay basis.
Blake Wilson, Drury Panthers (2011) scores game winner
Drury Panthers - 2 Truman State Bulldogs – 0
Senior Blake Wilson, moved from central defense to the midfield this season, scored his first career goal for the Panthers today in the 10th minute to give Drury the early lead and eventual win. The goal came from a throw-in by senior Alex Palmer (Kickapoo) as Wilson slipped in front of his defender to head the ball just under the crossbar (pictured). The goal came after a the Panther’s weathered an aggressive attacking effort by the Bulldogs as they held on and eventually found their way into the offensive end.
Drury scored a second via penalty kick when Micah Whorton scored in the 38th minute after David Emnett drew the foul in the box. Junior keeper Stephen Conner (Glendale) picked up his third shutout of the season and school-record 17th of his career in the contest as the Bulldogs (2-2) outshot the Panthers by a 13-8 count.
The Panthers started seniors Danny Collins (Glendale) and Alex Palmer (Kickapoo) and Adam Peterson (Kickapoo) was the first sub and earned significant minutes as well. There were also three freshman starters, with Brendan Langford at center back, Matt Hutchinson (CBC) at left half and Alec Nagel (Jeff City) at forward, the same line up that was featured at Lewis with the injury to Ben Taylor two weeks ago. Freshmen Matt Baker, Michael Yuede and Adam Heiligenstein also saw minutes.
I think sr David Emnett deserves more minutes at forward or attacking midfielder. He’s doing the little things including providing a reliable outlet on throw-ins (critical to holding the ball in tight games like today) and his work rate and passing free up Whorton. It was not an exemplary performance by the boys today as they had difficulty keeping the ball on the ground and finding their teammates. Part of that was due to the quality of the Bulldogs play, as they’ll rue this as one that got away, but the Panther’s were their own worst enemy today. That’s the good news as well as they got the win in difficult circumstances against a quality opponent.
Here’s an interview with Captain Blake Wilson following the win at Lewis on Sep 5th
Drury is off to a 3-1 start overall after last Sunday’s 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Illinois-Springfield on a goal by senior Peter Higgins in the game’s 48th minute.
Truman State is now 2-2, having defeated defending NCAA-II national champion Fort Lewis 2-1 last Friday in Kirksville. The Bulldogs also have defeated St. Edward’s 3-0 and lost to William Jewell 3-0. The Panthers and Bulldogs have met each of the last six seasons, with Drury holding a 3-2-1 record in that stretch with three consecutive victories, including a 4-2 decision in Kirksville last season.
Friday’s match will feature live audio play-by-play on Stretch Internet, with DU media student John Miller calling the action, as well as live stats.
The Panthers will continue the homestand on Sunday when Rockhurst visits Harrison for a noon start in GLVC play. Sunday’s match with Rockhurst will represent the first televised DU soccer match on Mediacom 22, and will be shown on a tape-delay basis throughout next week.

Evan Craig, Catholic breaks into the box in front of Nick Hogan, Greenwood
Greenwood Blue Jays – 1 Springfield Catholic – 3
Under a cool Fall sky, the small school rivalry was renewed this evening between the host Blue Jays and visiting Fightin’ Irish. Unlike last year’s District Final, the Blue Jays did not play conservatively on their home pitch, they came out looking for the first goal. It was not to be in this case as the Irish pounced on the first mistake. Keeper Hawken Thieme was able to stop Luke Strauss’ 25 yard shot but was unable to hold onto the ball as the new turf kept him from moving laterally as well as we might expect. Forward Adam Entrup was in position to tap in the rebound and the Irish had the lead in the 9th min.
The game continued in an attractive attacking mode for both teams although Catholic’s pressure was beginning to take it’s toll. In the 25th, Evan Craig (pictured) won a foot race in the left corner and turned into the box where he slipped his square ball across the face of the six yard box. Thieme went horizontal but only succeeded in knocking it down where Riley Harbach was happy to tap the loose ball into the net at the far post.
This Greenwood team is goal driven and they responded very well. A move into the offensive third led to a throw-in and Nick Hogan delivered a ball into the six yard box that Cory McCoy drove into the net, bringing the Jays back within one only a minute later.
The second half was not as kind to the Jays, already missing a pair of starters due to early season injuries, and Catholic took advantage of their depth to control possession and extend their lead in the 57th minute. Nick Kofron sent a 35 yard ball into the box from a set piece. Craig was sitting near the far post and redirected the ball into the net to score the final goal.
================ earlier report ========== game photos below ============== The Jays, like many teams, are still attempting to identify a reliable scoring option although if they start looking for Devon Whitlock more consistently, I think they would have more success in that category. A 2-1 win over Bolivar two weeks ago is the highlight and they played Carthage close, losing 0-1 in OT.
Catholic has set some high standards this season, traveling to KC twice where they lost to Rockhurst (#1 Class 3 in KC) and narrowly to Pembroke Hill. Since then, 3 games with 3 wins and a 20-1 scoring advantage points to the need for a solid defensive strategy by Greenwood.
