The Drury Panther’s moved back into the national rankings again today, in the 20th spot, after falling out of the preseason rankings following their loss to Ashland (OH) at the start of the season. Ashland is now #15 while Northern Kentucky is at #5, making them the top-ranked GLVC men’s program. Bellarmine falls five spots to #23 after their loss to St Joseph’s this past weekend.

In the Central region rankings, it’s NKU, Ashland, Drury and Bellarmine with the Top 4 teams advancing to the NCAA playoff. Rockhurst, who fell to Drury in OT on Sunday, are tied for 6th in the regional ranking with fellow GLVC programs Missouri S&T and Quincy.

UPDATE – From Facebook comes the news that Drury lost 0-1 to Quincy on a play that saw the Panther’s goalkeeper collide with one of his defenders, with both visiting the hospital post-game.

UPDATE 2 – from the Drury website

On the play, DU junior All-America goal-keeper Stephen Conner came out of the box to try to thwart Ellison’s open touch and instead collided with DU freshman defender Brendan Langford. Conner suffered a broken nose in the exchange, while Langford suffered a possible leg fracture, according to DU coach Ryan Swan, who was at University Hospital in Columbia with both players late Tuesday night.

The Panther’s play Quincy this evening in Columbia, at 7:00 pm at CoMo Park north of I-70 in a makeup of a game canceled due to lightning two weekends ago. Missouri S&T visits Springfield on Sunday, so this week the Panther’s can solidify their position.

Kickapoo Chiefs – 6
Branson Pirates – 0
In the first of three District 11 games they will play this week, the Chiefs scored three in the first half and a pair in the second to seal the win. The game winner was scored by Josh McCutcheon in the 18th when he challenged for a ball outside the box and powered it into the side netting. The Chiefs got a pair in the final minute of the first half from Aaron Strunk. The first came when McCutcheon lifted a soft ball over the defense that Aaron was able to run onto and as he eluded the first defender he slipped the ball past the keeper and a 2nd defender. On the ensuing kickoff, some confusion in the Branson defense led them to stop playing and Strunk was credited with the ensuing goal.

The second half was a bit more open and as the Pirates were able to move the ball outside to the wings more effectively. The Chiefs clamped down however, while scoring a pair. Elliott Williams got his on a run into the box and McCutcheon got a 2nd on the evening as he slid one through a crowd. UPDATE – I see Nate Lavoy scored while I was moving from the pitch to my car

Missouri Boys Soccer Class 3 Coaches Poll

This is pretty big folks. For the first time in my memory, none of the Big 3 programs (Glendale, Kickapoo and Rolla) are included in the Top 15 and only Kickapoo earned points, despite losing to Glendale last week. The Coaches must have noticed the win against Park Hill the first weekend of the season.

Welcome to the #15 ranked Carthage Tigers, the top ranked large school in the region. They are joined by #10 Columbia Rockbridge from District 9 in the Top 15.

Springfield SC At SLSG Friendlies In STL

Springfield SC Girls, U14 at LCS 2009PRESS RELEASE – Over the Labor Day weekend, 3 teams traveled up to St. Louis to participate in the SLSG Friendlies. This tournament has developed into one of the top competitions in the Midwest Region. “To be able to get this quality of competition this early in the season is a great learning experience. It really gives our kids the chance to compare themselves to the best right out of the gate,” said Eric Sorlie, Director of Soccer Operations.

All 3 teams played 4 games over 2 days. The u15 I girls got the chance to play 3 different SLSG teams and the River City Flames (#5 in Kansas). The girls really put forth a good effort and the results showed. They ended the weekend undefeated with 3 wins and 1 tie. They beat a team that was a State Cup semi-finalist (SLSG Green #3 in MO) from the previous year.

The 14 I boys played against the Missouri State Champions and Regional semi-finalist SLSG Elite. They also played against NASA that is currently ranked #4 in Georgia. Both games were played very close and competitive, but the boys ended on the wrong side of both results. They defeated Lindenhurst Area United (Chicago, IL), and tied SLSG premier navy. It was a great learning experience for the boys.

The 13 boys saw a rougher time on the weekend. they played some tough competition in SLSG Premier Green (#3 in MO), Kutis Academy Gold (MO), Brentwood Boys Elite and Midsouth Futbol (both in the top 15 in Tennessee). All four games were hard fought and the boys made some strong improvements from game 1 to game 4. They’ve turned that experience into a 4-0 start in their KC league.

A big thank you goes out to the players, parents, and coaches for traveling up to St. Louis, and taking on the task of competing in such a wonderful tournament. You all represented the Springfield Soccer Club very well!

The Panthers went on top first on a goal from 10 yards out by sophomore Kelly Gallagher at 29:09, her second on the season, with junior Nicole Williams picking up the assist.

After a scoreless initial 10-minute extra period, Higgins worked his way toward the goal from the right side and fired a pass to Whorton, who put it home to touch off a DU celebration as the Panthers improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the GLVC with their fourth straight victory.

Senior Danny Collins got the Panthers on the board first wen he scored from three yards away in the 13th minute, off an assist from freshman Alec Nagel and senior Alex Palmer, for a 1-0 advantage before Rockhurst tied it on Curt McDonald’s goal in the 34th minute to send the teams to halftime knotted at 1-1.

Paolo Scoppola scored an improbable goal from 20 yards out over the head of DU keeper Stephen Conner at 59:42 to give the Hawks (3-2, 2-2 in the GLVC) a 2-1 advantage before the Panthers rallied.

Conner had five saves, matching Rockhurst keeper Kyle Clawson, as the Panthers outshot the visiting Hawks by a 13-9 count.
