Sep 23rd Games – Catholic Subdues Tigers

Catholic at Carthage, Harvest Moon on 1st Day of Fall

Catholic at Carthage, Harvest Moon on 1st Day of Fall

Carthage Tigers – 0
Springfield Catholic – 5
The Harvest Moon shone most brightly tonight on the visitors as the Fightin’ Irish took advantage of the Tiger’s willingness to go toe-to-toe, using their disciplined approach to breaking down the defense. Catholic got their first goal only 3 minutes into the match from Luke Strauss. To the Tiger’s credit, their response was positive and motivated as they worked hard to move the ball across the field and into the offensive end although it took 15 minutes before goalkeeper Levi Millsap would be tested.

The game was a lively affair as both teams got into a running game but once Coach Joe Kofron had a chance to chat with his starters, they focused on slowing down the game and running their offense. It led to two late goals, first by freshman Ryan Randell, getting his first varsity goal from a set piece, pouncing on the 40 yard ball into the box when it fell to him. In the final minute of the first half, sr Taylor Arens stepped in front of a pass at midfield and was given too much space as he came forward, finally unleashing a shot from 25 yards that found the bottom right corner, slipping under goalkeeper Ludin Gonzalez’s diving save attempt. Two additional goals in the second provided the final margin.

While a skilled team, the Tiger’s were reminded tonight what playoff soccer looks like and they will need to find a way to make better use of striker Joe Curti who had limited touches until moving back into the midfield. The Irish offense looks to be the most potent in the region, regardless of class, but Kickapoo, Glendale and possibly Nixa are all looking for post-season success and Carthage will need to begin preparing now for playoff soccer. Unless they want this to be their third straight year finishing in the Sectional game.

Carthage faces Willard on Tuesday, one of two challengers along with Joplin for the District 12 crown the Tigers hope to capture again.

Carthage, the top-ranked Class 3 program in Southwest Missouri, hosts the Irish tonight, probably the best team in the region regardless of class. This could be the bragging rights game of the season.

Wizards Comeback Keeps Them In Playoff Race

From the KC Wizards website – KC’s Vermes: We just went for it on the 4-3 win over Houston, coming back from 1-3 down.

Manager Peter Vermes’ team still has a long way to go to accomplish either one of those things, but Kansas City are 6-1-3 in their last 10 league games and full of belief after suffering through a difficult first half of the season. They are now just three points behind Seattle, who currently hold the final playoff spot with a game in hand.

“We’re on a mission,” Vermes said. “The guys believe that we are because they want it just as bad. We’re not the best team in the league, and we’re not the worst. We’re a team that can compete.”

#2 Tulsa at #1 Akron – Catch It At Farmers Gastropub Friday

Austin Neal, Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (2013)

Austin Neal, Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (2013)

The #2-ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane visit #1-ranked Akron Friday evening. The game is being shown live on Fox Soccer Channel but I’m going to watch it tape-delayed at Farmer’s Gastropub beginning at 9pm Friday. Come downtown and join me for a nightcap and some top notch college soccer Friday!

Tulsa is coming off of their 2-1 overtime win over the Missouri State Bears on Tuesday evening and the game will pit the No. 1-ranked defense of the Zips against the No. 1-ranked attack of the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa has scored 18 goals in six games (3.0/game) while Akron has kept its sheet clean with five straight shutouts to start the year. UA, who lost in the NCAA Final last year, is the only team in the country that has yet to allow a goal in 2010.

The Zips were 2-0 against the Hurricane a year ago with a 1-0 victory in Tulsa in the second game of the year and another 1-0 result at Lee Jackson Field against TU in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Zips jumped on top early in both matches with Anthony Ampaipitakwong finding the net at the 10 minute mark in the first contest and Kofi Sarkodie scoring a goal in the 17th minute in the last.

Missouri State Falls To #2 Tulsa In OT

TULSA, Okla. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (2-4-0) played the second-ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane (6-0-0) tough for 107 minutes before losing 2-1 in Tulsa, Okla., Tuesday evening.

Missouri State senior goalkeeper Alex Riggs made seven saves in the match and helped direct a Bears defense that kept the potent Tulsa offense off the scoreboard until the 74th minute.

Missouri State took the lead when Edin Sabic took a free kick from near midfield in the 14th minute. He sailed the long drive over the head on Tulsa’s goalkeeper and into the net. The goal is Sabic’s first of this season.

The Bears would hold the lead until the 74th minute. Tulsa’s Adrian Klammer picked up a loose ball after a pass into the box and put it past Riggs to tie the match. Two minutes later, the Golden Hurricane got a free kick just outside the Missouri State box. Ashley McInnes tried to catch the Bears sleeping with a quick restart, but his shot caromed off the crossbar and out of play.

Jordan Hoffman broke away in the final minute of play, but his shot was saved by a diving Ray Clark resulting in a corner kick in the final seconds of regulation. A brief scramble in front of the Tulsa net was unsuccessful and the two sides went to overtime tied, 1-1.

The two teams would remain tied until the 107th minute. Tulsa’s Austin Neil picked up a rebound off of a Riggs’ save and put in the game winner for the Golden Hurricane.

Missouri State was able to hang with Tulsa throughout the match despite giving up 15 corners and 17 shots to the Golden Hurricane.

Report from the Tulsa Golden Hurricane website

Missouri State will begin conference play at Central Arkansas on Saturday, September 25, with a 4:00 p.m. kick off in Conway, Ark. The Bears will then travel to Saint Louis next Tuesday for an NCAA Tournament rematch with the Billikens. Bears fans can attend a pregame function at the Buffalo Brewing Company in St. Louis or get $4 tickets to the SLU game with a voucher obtained from the MSU soccer offices.
