Parkview Vikings – 2
Crocker Lions – 1
Game winner by John Bogue’s (#19) on a header at the far post from Jordan Houseman’s (#4) corner kick, in the 73rd minute.

The Vikings needed Bogue’s heroics as the Lions, a Class 1 team that is a likely Sectional opponent for Springfield Catholic in November, got the first goal when AJ Imilkowski broke in on goal and gave Crocker the early lead. The Vikings tied the game on a penalty kick soon afterwards, converted by Brian Otradovec, one of the more exciting forwards in the area this season.

The final 60 minutes was as wide open as the first 20 as both teams were in full attack mode. While entertaining, it is not a strategy that works in November. Crocker is loaded with seniors and returns 10 starters from their District champion squad in 2009. The tools are in place with Nick Goodrich Marshalling the defense, leading by example with a pair of goal line clearances tonight, Cody Williams and Johnathon Crawford in the middle and Teddy Zeigenbein joining AJ up top.

The Vikings are introducing me to a new group of players who are stepping into starting roles this year and developing their own style. Goalkeeper Evin Barber offers a fearless and athletic presence in the goal while Alex Blanco and #8 will be tasked with creating opportunities for Otradovec up top. The Vikings are learning how to move the ball and create opportunities and there were half a dozen that they would have rued until they got the game winner. Here’s to preparing for the real season in late October!
