DENTON, Texas – The Missouri State women’s soccer team dropped its season opening match at North Texas, 2-1, this afternoon in Denton, Texas. With temperatures near 100 degrees and heat indices even higher, the Bears battled the Mean Green and the elements to open the season.

It didn’t take the Bears long as freshman Brooke Williams put Missouri State ahead in just the second minute of play. The Bears got a breakout and sophomore Rachel Weimer centered a feed to Williams who ended up one-on-one with the Mean Green keeper. Williams was able to slide the ball past the keeper inside the back post to give Missouri State a 1-0 lead.

North Texas got the equalizer in the 16th minute when Michelle Young made a great run in on net and beat Missouri State goalkeeper Jessica Teahan. UNT’s Julie Lackey would get the game winner in the 75th minute off a free kick. Brooke Williams had two of the three shots for the Bears with fellow freshman Shelby Stewart registering the other. UNT outshot Missouri State 12 to three in shots for the match.

“We faced a tough team in North Texas today,” said head coach Rob Brewer. “Conditions were very tough, but our girls battled the whole match.”

The Bears return to Plaster Field on Friday, August 27, for the regular season home opener against UALR in a 7:00 p.m. tilt. Tennessee Martin will also visit Plaster Field during the homestand on Sunday, August 29, at 1:00 p.m.

The Missouri State men’s soccer team gave up a second half goal to drop a 1-0 decision to New Mexico in a neutral site exhibition match played in Tulsa on Sunday. Sophomore transfer Devon Sandoval scored the lone goal of the game in the 55th minute for the Lobo win.

“We knew we could be at a disadvantage playing a fresh team after our game in the heat on Friday,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “We knew we would face a lot of challenges, but our guys came out very composed and took a mature approach to the game for such a young team.”

Sandoval picked up a pass from redshirt freshman Lawrence Robledo inside the 6-yard box for the goal. Sandoval, an Albuquerque native, is making his return to New Mexico after spending his freshman season at San Diego State. Sandoval and Robledo are two of 20 Lobos on the team that are sophomores, redshirt freshmen or true freshmen. Sophomore Victor Rodriguez defended the Lobo goal for the shutout.

Senior keeper Alex Riggs went the distance for the Bears, allowing just one goal to the Lobos offense.

“We did some nice things out there today,” said head coach Jon Leamy. “We also have some things to work on to get ready for the season opener in a week and a half. Our boys battled a tough team from New Mexico for 90 minutes today.”

Exhibition play will wrap up Friday, August 27, with a match versus Missouri S&T at 5:00 p.m. at Plaster Field. Missouri State will then travel to SMU for the regular season opener on September 1. The Bears regular season home opener is against Green Bay on September 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Monett Cubs

The Monett Cubs soccer team is expecting great things this year. “I am really excited about this team and its potential,” said Head Coach Jeremy Wilson. The soccer Cubs finished the 2009 season 10-8 and are looking to build off that success.

“The team’s biggest gain in the off season has been in the chemistry department,” said Wilson. “Soccer is a free flowing sport where you have to anticipate where your teammate is going to be.”

Returning for the Cubs is first team All District senior Abraham Mejia. “Mejia is a rare athlete,” said Wilson “He is good at every sport he plays, he listens and is an easy kid to coach.”

The Cubs also return senior midfielder Pedro Himeraz mid-fielder and senior defender Billy Starkson defender, to help lead the team.

SBU Bearcats Competing In Brazil

SBU Soccer in BrazilCollege programs in the area began pre-season practice last weekend, with most conducting fitness tests followed by two-a-day practices and some early exhibition matches. The Southwest Baptist Bearcats schedule has a different focus this year. The ladies began returning to campus over the weekend and formally checked in on Monday morning. That afternoon they were on a plane to Brazil. Junior Kelly Issac (Wales) is offering a team diary on the Bearcats website:

Before we even get excited about the Brazil trip, our thoughtful coach awakes us at 6:00 a.m. Awaiting us are the four fitness tests that we have been preparing for all preseason. After all that running, coach was kind enough to let us scrimmage for 40 minutes. For me the scrimmage was okay; however my legs were starting to turn to jelly.

All the girls passed and there were no injuries so it was a good day … NOW we can start getting excited.

The Bearcats roster includes a number of new recruits from our region including Paige Hemphill (Ozark), Erin Boschen (Hillcrest), Megan Melugin (Kickapoo), Chelsea VanHook (Camdenton), Molly Marcotte (Republic), Rachel Haden (Ozark) and Amy Coffey (Rogersville). I hope to have more photos and stories when the ladies return where the first shock – Brazil is cold, but we didn’t expect it to be this cold – is being followed by games, bonding with their hosts and a great adventure. Check it out on the SBU website.

Real Madrid Sign Mesut Ozil

real madrid logoFrom Reuters comes news that Real Madrid have completed their new signings for the season, having spent $100 million while adding Khedira, Canales, Pedro Leon, Angel Di Maria and Ricardo Carvalho in addition to the German international who starred at the World Cup.

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid have completed their pre-season spending by signing Mesut Ozil and have new coach Jose Mourinho’s powers of persuasion to thank for luring the Germany midfielder to the La Liga club. Mourinho now has a host of talented youngsters to blend into his team but has up to four players competing for the attacking midfield role with Ozil, Kaka, Sergio Canales and Rafael van der Vaart vying for the same spot.

With the squad needing to be reduced by one to 25, the Dutchman looks the most likely to lose out. “We have to trim the squad and we will look into doing that in the coming days,” Valdano said when asked about Van der Vaart’s future.
