USA U20 Women Face Nigeria Sunday In Quarterfinal

2010 Womens U-20 World Cup logoAfter winning Group D at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, the United States will face Group C runner-up Nigeria in its quarterfinal match on Sunday, July 25 at 4:30 a.m. CT live on ESPNU.

A U.S. Women’s National Team has never faced an African team in the knockout round of a Women’s World Cup, although the senior U.S. WNT has faced Nigeria in the first round of the last three FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments and also in group play at the 2000 Olympics. It will be the second meeting with an African team in this tournament for the U.S. U-20s, which tied Ghana 1-1 in its first group match, and will mark the first time the USA has faced two African teams in a Women’s World Cup. Nigeria has scored only four goals, but has allowed just three in tying two group matches 1-1 against England and Mexico and defeating Japan, 2-1. Nigeria was less than 13 minutes from winning Group C as it led Mexico by 1-0 score in the final group game for both teams.

The United States has won its group at all five FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cups that have been contested, dating back to the inaugural tournament in 2002. Groups were actually won by two CONCACAF sides as Mexico took a big step in its women’s soccer history by taking the top spot in Group C. The other two groups were won by European teams as Germany rolled through Group A and Sweden took top honors in Group B.

Catholic’s Natalie Smid Featured On KSMU

Springfield Catholic celebrates State Championship, 2010

The senior to be at Springfield Catholic, an All-State soccer player (far right, photo above) who is also the 9th best cross country runner in the state (per Coach Nick Russo) and holds the Catholic cross-country school record, was featured on KSMU radio recently. Natalie Smid: A Modern-Day ‘Moses’ With Spirit, Smarts, and Charisma covers not only her athletic accomplishments but also the community work she is actively involved in, on top of maintaining an academic record targeted to getting her into Medical school.

I’ve gotten to know Natalie in her three years of High School play, from my early interview with her and her close friend Rachel Scott as freshmen following a key win, to this season as she accepted the reigns of responsibility for leading her championship squad. I’m proud to know she’s using my photo of her celebrating, as Bekah Bade runs to find her first after scoring the eventual game-winner in the championship game. Yet when asked for a photo to use in the KSMU story, she used the one I took of her teamates holding the trophy. Much as Landon Donovan ushered his teammates onto the stage first at the Espy’s and featured Bocanegra as the first speaker, despite the award for Greatest Moment being given in his name. Teams win, not players, and Natalie is a leader that knows that in her heart and leads by example, the best method I know.

U20 US Women Chasing Quarterfinal Spot In World Cup Wednesday

DRESDEN, Germany (July 17, 2010) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team defeated Switzerland 5-0 in its second Group D match at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup as forward Sydney Leroux scored three times while Kristie Mewis and Zakiya Bywaters also added goals.

Leroux’s hat trick was just the fourth in Women’s World Cup history for the USA and first in a youth World Cup since Kelly Wilson scored three times against Denmark during a 6-0 quarterfinal victory at the 2002 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup. The other hat tricks came in the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup when Michelle Akers scored five times in a 7-0 win against Chinese Taipei and Carin Gabarra famously notched three goals in a 5-2 semifinal victory against Germany. The right-footed Leroux scored all three goals with her left foot.

The USA heads into its final Group D match against the Korea Republic on July 21 in Bielefeld (11 a.m. CT on ESPN2) needing a win or a tie to advance to the quarterfinals. A win would clinch the group title for the USA.

The Americans sit second in the group with four points from two games behind the Koreans, who have six points after two wins. The USA could possibly advance even with a loss as the Americans hold a commanding goal difference lead over Ghana, which has just one point after falling 4-2 to the Koreans in the first Group D match of the day. The Swiss, who face Ghana in Bochum on July 21, have zero points and have been eliminated from the tournament.
