The Kickapoo Chiefs have offered a second coach to the regional ranks with long-time assistant Mike Hines hiring as the Head Coach for the Republic Tigers. Hines will move from the Brown and Gold to the Orange and Black at Republic High School. The Ozark Tigers were the most recent beneficiaries of Kickapoo’s largess when Head Coach Tom Davidson moved to Ozark in 2007.

I had a chance to chat with Coach Hines following the Chief’s win over Davidson and the Tigers on Thursday evening about his career change – from Missouri State University employee to Student Teacher/Teacher/Head Coach.

Congratulations Coach Hines. The Tigers will compete in Class 2 District 5 which includes Bolivar, Marshfield, West Plains and Carl Junction locally. The photo is from Thursday’s game against Kickapoo. Coach Hodge is reacting to a call by one of the referees, not to Hine’s move to Republic :)

“Winning anytime is big, but beating a quality team like Glendale is huge. We were able to play our style of game and win.”

And gain a bit of revenge, since the Lady Falcons blanked the Lady Jays 2-0 in the Class 3 quarterfinals last year.

7th Annual Lady Zizzer Soccer Classic Canceled

lightningUPDATE – The Classic has been canceled due to thunderstorms. Just heard the rumble of thunder on Commercial Street as well. Unfortunate, Schmitt had some really nice match ups this year, a quality group of teams.

The Classic was interrupted Friday by lightning with only one game being completed, with the Waynesville Tigers defeating the Mt View Liberty Eagles. Game times were adjusted for Saturday in hopes of completing all the games while there is still a chance of intermittent storms.

The tournament was canceled Saturday morning when the early games were interrupted by lightning and weather radar didn’t offer much hope. There were a couple of games that were played later in the day although none reached full time. Coach Schmitt offered a wrap up on the Zizzer soccer website.

Tottenham Face ManU Saturday, 6:30 am on ESPN2

Jermain Defoe, Tottenham Hotspur

Jermain Defoe, Tottenham Hotspur

From the Guardian: Tomorrow’s game between Manchester United and Tottenham at Old Trafford is heavy with significance. United’s hopes of winning a historic fourth successive league title have been revived by Chelsea’s attack of hiccups while Spurs’ chances of holding on to fourth place were not harmed by Manchester City’s defeat last Saturday in the derby. Whatever happens the outcome will have a considerable influence on who finishes where at the top of the Premier League.

Yet for most of the 75,000-odd fans making their way to Old Trafford tomorrow lunchtime the sense of anticipation will have been sweetened not so much by the consequences of the result as the likely quality of the entertainment involved in producing it. City against United was all about who won and lost; the game was largely a humdrum affair only partly redeemed by Paul Scholes’s melodramatic late winner. By contrast matches between United and Spurs have a tradition of producing open‑ended, fluctuating encounters in which attacking imagination and individual ingenuity has frequently upstaged grim defence and the desire to stop people playing.

This is an 8-team tournament, using the standard head-to-head tournament format with a winner’s bracket and a loser’s bracket. No match will end in a tie, therefor if the score is tied after two 40-minute halves, we will play two 10-minute golden goal overtimes and then proceed (if necessary) to best of 5 penalty kicks – All penalty kick shootouts will be handled according to the NFHS Time Game Procedure.

Teams participating in the 3rd annual event include Boonville, Branson, Laquey, Mexico, Sacred Heart, Southern Boone County and Warrensburg. The Lake Sun Leader offers some background on the Tournament as well as Miriam Taylor (pictured above at Nixa), tied for first in scoring for the Lakers as a freshman.

Capital City Invitational Games – Friday Games Canceled

Jeff City Lady Jay's Seniors, 2010

Jeff City Lady Jay's Seniors, 2010 from Jays website

The Capital City Invitational, hosted by the Jefferson City Lady Jays this weekend at their home pitch at 179 Soccer Park, has canceled their games for this evening. I assume it is due to the severe weather forecasts for today across the state. Saturday’s schedule of 8 games will be played as scheduled.

The Tournament is split into a Red and Black groups.

Red includes Jefferson City, Westminster, Glendale and Cape Central.
Black includes Jeff City Helias, Rolla, Springfield Catholic and Lee’s Summit West.

Lee’s Summit West received 10 points in the Class 3 polls to Jefferson City’s 6 points and are the highest ranked large school teams at the event while Catholic comes in near the top of the small school programs. The Irish won this tournament three years ago (?) and will play Lee’s Summit West and Helias on Saturday, two good games.

Missouri High School Girls State Poll – Glendale Tumbles, Catholic Impresses

Veronica Renner, Springfield Catholic (2010)

Veronica Renner, Springfield Catholic (2010) by Amy Schepers

The Missouri Soccer Coaches Association has released their second poll for the season.

    Class 1

1 St. Vincent (8) 107
2 Springfield Catholic (3) 100
3 St. Pius (Festus) 86
4 Trinity 59
5 Southern Boone 57
6 Sacred Heart 48
7 St. Pius (KC) 28
8 Principia 26
9 Greenwood 21
10 Barstow 19
Kennedy 17, John Burroughs 15, Bishop LeBlond 12, Whitfield 6, Lutheran North 2, Orchard Farm 2

Catholic remains a strong #2 in the Class 1 poll, moving up with 100 points (from 82) and 3 votes for 1st place from coaches across the state. Southern Boone looks to be the Quarterfinalist challenger for the Lady Irish while Sacred Heart out of Sedalia is enjoying a strong season in District 7.

    Class 2

1 St. Dominic (9) 108
2 Notre Dame de Sion (2) 101
3 Notre Dame (STL) 86
4 Visitation 68
5 Platte County 60
6 Moberly 47
6 Smithville 47
8 Pembroke Hill 26
9 Villa Duchesne 19
10 Rosati-Kain 12
Others: Duchesne 11, Staley 8, St. Charles West 7, Kearney 5, Harrisonville 1

Harrisonville, part of District 5 along with Bolivar and Warrensburg, is the only team from the region receiving votes.

    Class 3

1 St. Joe’s Academy (9) 149
2 Incarnate Word Academy (1) 131
3 Liberty 130
4 Hazelwood West 117
5 Lafayette 108
6 St. Teresa’s Academy 87
7 Cor Jesu 80
8 Ursuline 78
9 Lee’s Summit North 60
10 Francis Howell North 58
11 Nerinx Hall 36
12 Truman 34
13 Rockwood Summit 30
14 Park Hill South 26
15 Marquette 15
Others: Jackson 14, Lee’s Summit West 10, Parkway South 9, Ray-Pec 8, Jeff City 6, Ft. Zumwalt West 6, Glendale 4, Lindbergh 2, Parkview 1

At the midway point in the regular season (Districts begin May 15th) the primary impact regionally has seen Glendale fall from #11 to receiving a few votes and now the top team from Central and Southwest Missouri would appear to be the Jeff City Jays who will battle Rolla and Camdenton for District 10 honors.
