The Kansas City Wizards began training in Phoenix, Arizona late last month, signaling the start of a five-week preseason camp to prepare the team for the 2010 MLS season. Jack Jewsbury is not with the team however, but rather has begun his recovery from surgery for a tear in his hip. It’s been three months of recovery and the Wizards offered this video interview recently.
Note that there are nine teams from across Major League Soccer are participating with the Wizards in the Arizona capital, part of an effort by the organization to create a consistent preseason base for multiple MLS teams.

Southwest Baptist Bearcats Sign Haden & Hemphill from Ozark, Marcotte from Republic
From the SBU website:
Rob Podeyn, Southwest Baptist University soccer coach, has signed nine recruits.
The recruits include Rachel Haden of Ozark, Paige Hemphill of Ozark, Molly Marcotte of Republic, Brenna Lacillade of Warrensburg, Ashley Creason of Lee’s Summit, Brittney Smith of Overland Park, Kan., Emily Claudell of Overland Park, Kan., Jen French of Lenexa, Kan., and Marene Gomez of South Jordan, Utah.
Rachel Haden (Ozark, Missouri) – Haden is a strong and physical defensive midfield player from the Springfield area. Standing at 5’6”, Rachel is a solid possession player who is not afraid to challenge for the ball. “Rachel was actually the first player I saw and began recruiting when I came to SBU. She plays with a lot of heart and desire, and has that little bit of attitude you want from players in the midfield. I was impressed with her the first time I saw her play,” said coach Podeyn. “Rachel has played three years of varsity soccer at Ozark High School and has played club soccer for the Mambas under coach Brian Russell the last nine years. As a starter the last three years in high school, Rachel has been selected to all-conference, all-district, and all-region teams. “Southwest Baptist University had exactly what I was looking for. I liked the physical therapy program, I was impressed with the soccer program, and I like the academic reputation SBU has,” said Haden. Paige Hemphill (Ozark, Missouri) – Hemphill is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the state of Missouri. She has been a three-year starter on her varsity soccer team at Ozark High School, and has been selected to the all-state team the last two years. “Being a former goalkeeper I am very particular about how my goalkeepers train and how they are developed. Paige impressed me with her ability to command the area and control the box. She is an excellent communicator and leader in the back. She is a strong technical goalkeeper who is very capable of making the big saves,” said Podeyn. “I chose to attend college at SBU because it is known for its nursing program through the SBU/St. John’s School of Nursing, and nursing is the career path which I hope to pursue,” said Hemphill. “I like the fact that SBU is a private college and the class sizes are smaller. It also has a great campus, and I feel safe being there. I chose SBU to continue my athletic career because I enjoyed the coach and the level of play the team brings to the sport. I felt the team and coach was a good fit for me as a player and student. I like the vision coach Podeyn has for his team at SBU,” Hemphill added. Molly Marcotte (Republic, Missouri) – Marcotte is a determined and dedicated player with good size and strong technique. At 5’8”, Molly is strong in the air, but also very good at maintaining possession and reading the game. “Molly gives us another defender who is smart, aggressive, physical, and able to challenge the ball in the air. She fits well with our system and how we want to play,” said Podeyn. Molly attends Republic High School where they have yet to begin a girls soccer program; her development has been through year-round club soccer. Her current team, the Mambas, is coached by Brian Russell. He has been instrumental of several players in the Springfield area and has helped to produce many college bound girls soccer players. Molly has become a player who through her determination and hard work has developed into one of the best defenders in the Springfield area. “SBU is a superb university. It offers what I want academically and the soccer program is up and coming. It is also semi-close to home which I like,” said Marcotte.“I’m excited about these additions,” Podeyn said. “After our season of 7-9-3 last year, I felt like we needed to upgrade and add depth to every aspect of our game. And I think we’ve done that with this recruiting class.”
The Bearcats will open the 2010 preseason with a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, next fall. They will open the 2010 season at home against Quincy University Thursday, Sept. 2.

Missouri State Bears Sign Tyler Vieth and Cole Alexander
The first player, Tyler Vieth, is from Evansville, IN but chose not to stay at home for school although he’ll see plenty of the Ace’s as they compete in the Missouri Valley Conference. As noted in yesterday’s story on Jesse Williams who signed with Drury, both played for the Football Club of Evansville’s U-17 boys’ state championship team last summer. The team is coached by former Drury Panther head Coach, now Evansville Ace’s assistant, Marshall Ray.
Memorial’s Tyler Vieth chooses Missouri State
and the second player, Cole Alexander, follows a former San Juan club teammate to the Midwest. Johannes Demarzi graduated in December and is now involved in a tryout with 3rd Division Crewe Alexander in England (more on that later). The link to Demarzi played a role in Leamy noticing Alexander and his eventually winding up at Missouri State. That’s how Alexander came to Scoring a Spot in SpringfieldTyler, who was named first-team all-state as a junior and senior by the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association, signed a national letter of intent with Missouri State University on Thursday. As a senior midfielder, Tyler had six goals and was second in the state with 26 assists last season.
Missouri State, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, advanced to the NCAA Tournament and was ranked in the Top 20 most of last season. Vieth also was impressed by the coaching staff, the school’s academics and the Springfield, Mo., community. Vieth, who also made official visits to DePaul and Eastern Illinois, did not consider the University of Evansville. He said he wanted to get away from home.
Vieth, whose father played for Saint Louis University, said he needs to improve his strength and technical skills to prepare for the next level.
His high school coach at Oakmont, Mark Broers, saw something in Alexander very early on. Elite scorers are rare at the high school level, and Alexander clearly was one.
“I was always very impressed with Cole’s ability to beat defenders from the time I met him his sophomore year,” Broers said. “He was also able to finish and score many goals in each of his three varsity seasons at Oakmont. As an avid soccer fan and constant student of the game, I recognize that any player possessing both of these attributes is special.”

Jesse Williams, FC Evansville, Signs With Drury Panthers
From the WFIE TV 14 website in Evansville comes news of a new recruit for the Drury Panthers
WARRICK CO., IN (WFIE) – This past season, Castle senior soccer standout Jesse Williams led the Knights in scoring, was team captain, and was named the Knights most valuable player. Wednesday afternoon, Jesse signed a national letter of intent to play college soccer at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri.
“Well it was very easy, I was very interested in their education program and that was an easy choice for me because that’s what I want to pursue is secondary education,” Williams said. “Also, the coach was very nice to me, he wanted me to play there and he just made me an easy deal and I was hooked.”
“He was just an extension of our coaching staff,” Castle Coach Doug Diedrich said. “You know, you can’t be everywhere at one time and Jesse was just a leader on the field and off the field. When we weren’t around, we felt comfortable our goals were going to be met and attained and he was the person who followed through on those things.”
Jesse also played for the U-18 FC Evansville who were Indiana State Cup Champions in 2009.
One of Jesse’s club teammates, Tyler Vieth, has signed to play for Missouri State. The boys were coached by former Drury Panther’s head coach Marshall Ray at FC Evansville during their run to the Region II Tournament.
FC Springfield, Fair Grove Soccer Academy Enter “Sister Club” Partnership
Agreement forms SWMO United, begins annual Friendship Cup
Wednesday, February 17, 2010
Springfield, MO – A new partnership between two local soccer clubs will offer Southwest Missouri youth a unique new opportunity to develop as players and experience elite competition.
FC Springfield and the Fair Grove Soccer Academy have entered into a sister club agreement that will offer their players additional playing opportunities and give both clubs’ elite players the opportunity to experience top-notch competition.
Under the partnership, both clubs will field separate teams, just as they do now, that will play league and tournament play as determined by each team.
However, every year the FGSA and FC Springfield will play in various tournaments around the state under the joint banner of SWMO United. Players will be selected for the SWMO United team based on commitment and ability, giving the best players from both clubs a chance to experience a higher level of competition.
“Hopefully this will allow our best players the opportunity to play against really challenging competition without feeling like they have to go someplace else, leaving their friends and teammates to get that experience,” Cliff Nurnberg, FC Springfield Director of Coaching, said.
The two club’s independent teams will also compete in a series of inter-club friendlies each season between age-compatible teams in a Friendship Cup format. The winner of the most games in this series will take home the Friendship Cup until the following season.
“I think this is a great opportunity for both clubs to continue to grow and offer our players better and better opportunities,” FGSA’s Director of Coaching Logan Hoffman said. “Both clubs have very similar coaching philosophies and beliefs about player development. This will give our players a chance to experience more within the game of soccer than they ever have before.”
