From the Post-Dispatch, which has a team of 4 on-site this weekend:
Playing in their first semifinals since 2005 the Cadets (25-4-3) scored three goals in the first 12 minutes on their way to a 6-2 pounding of Columbia-Hickman (14-9-2) Friday night at the Anheuser-Busch Center

Hickman’s George Plankorous buries a quality direct kick from 20 yards

SLUH Jr Billikens – 4
Park Hill – 0
From the Post-Dispatch: For the first time in 19 years and the second time in state history, St. Louis University High and Christian Brothers College will play for the state championship. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.

SLUH (21-6-1) made it an all St. Louis final after it dominated Park Hill (24-6) for a 4-0 victory Friday night. CBC has won six state titles, SLUH has won three. SLUH won the two matchups with CBC this season. The Junior Billikens posted a 4-0 win at the CBC Tournament and won a 2-1 thriller in a driving rain storm in late October.

MO State Soccer: Springfield Catholic Headed to Class 1 Final vs Whitfield

Catholic vs Kennedy, Class 1 State Semifinal

Catholic vs Kennedy, Class 1 State Semifinal

Springfield Catholic Fightin’ Irish – 3
JF Kennedy – 0
1st half goals by senior captains David Bailey and Justin Bowenschulte gave Catholic a 2-0 lead after only 15 minutes. They extended the lead to 3-0 late in the second half when Adam Entrup was sent in alone and buried his shot. The Celt’s fought hard and used every tool available to them, even their hands (he was assessed a yellow card) but will head to the consolation match while Catholic reaches the Final in their 3rd year, and 2nd trip, to State.

From the Post-Dispatch: Nine penalty cards were issued in the second half and led to the ejection of Kennedy coach Tom Rapp.

Things went downhill for the Celts after their best scoring chance of the game resulted in a yellow card with about 27 minutes left in the second half. Senior Blake Ficken sent a free kick into Springfield Catholic’s penalty box, but a Kennedy player swatted at the loose ball with his hand (pictured above, got it!). After being initially given a red card, it was reduced to a yellow card but Springfield put the game away on Entrup’s goal 15 minutes later.

Kennedy, which made its first playoff appearance in nearly 20 years, will play in Saturday’s third-place game at 10 a.m. while Springfield Catholic will play Whitfield in the Final at 4:00 pm.

Whitfield – 2
St Pius X (KC) – 1
From the Post-Dispatch: Following a scoreless first half during Friday’s Class 1 soccer semifinal, Whitfield coughed up a goal to St. Pius X (Kansas City) before the second half was two minutes old. But with its resolve tested, Whitfield fought back and scored the next two goals, including senior Peter Jacobi’s game-winner from about 30 yards out.

St Dominic – 2
Jeff City Helias Crusaders – 0
From the Post-Dispatch: St. Dominic (22-5) took the 1-0 lead with 28 minutes, 14 seconds left before halftime. That’s where Dominic’s Zac Walsh sent a cross in front of the Helias goal where Troy Gittemeier pounced on the ball and knocked it past Helias goalkeeper Matt Skain for the lead.

“Zac played a nice ball to me and I saw the shot was open so I took it,” Gittemeier said. “I just tried to place it in the far corner.”

St. Dominic added to the lead with 19:04 left before halftime when Michael Yuede converted a penalty kick into the upper right corner past Skain after St. Dominic’s Brett Stiffler was knocked down in the Helias penalty area by a defender.

Missouri State Bears Fall At St Louis

Missouri State Bears – 1
St Louis University Billikens – 2
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (12-5-2) fell to Saint Louis University (15-6-0) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in front of 1,377 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium tonight by a final of 2-1. It was the second time in school history that the Billikens knocked the Bears out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round.

The Bears applied early offensive pressure with Johannes Demarzi recording two of the three shots on goal in the first eight minutes. But the Billikens would get on the board first. After a couple of fouls near midfield, Tim Ream would take a free kick from about 45 yards out. His serve into the box found the head of James Dice, who beat Alex Riggs for a 1-0 Billikens lead.

In the 17th minute, Missouri State defender Ryan Hennessy was called for a foul in the box after a battle with Stephen Bortolon. SLU’s leading scorer Mike Roach would take the penalty kick and convert to put the Billikens up 2-0.

At the half, Saint Louis held a 2-0 lead despite Missouri State outshooting the Billikens, 12-3. Edin Sabic tallied five of the Bears’ shots. Saint Louis earned two corners to the Bears one.

The Bears would get on the board just five minutes into the second half. Jordan Hoffman would steal the ball at the top of the box and feed it ahead to Heath Melugin. Melugin drilled a high shot off the bottom of the crossbar and in to cut the deficit to 2-1. The goal was Melugin’s sixth of the year.

The Bears outshot Saint Louis 22-5 in the match. Nine of the Bears’ shots were on goal, forcing SLU’s Ross Kaufman to make eight saves. Sabic had six shots and Melugin added four for Missouri State. The Bears earned three corners to the Billikens’ four.

“Our guys battled out there tonight,” said head coach Jon Leamy. “You could tell that they wanted this game, but it’s tough to come back from a 2-0 hole against a good team like Saint Louis. They (SLU) are a well-coached team.”

Missouri State is now 0-3 in the NCAA Tournament (1997 at SLU, 0-2; 1999 at UAB, 1-2). Saint Louis improves to 9-0-3 all-time against the Bears with all matches occurring in St. Louis. The Bears 12 wins are the most since 2005 (12-4-2) and is the sixth highest win total in school history.

And I assume you’ve heard about the controversy regarding the Ireland vs France game? France won, putting them into the World Cup on the last possible chance. Here’s how they got it done. I think I need a drink…

According to the Malawi World Cup blog, the release date for the November 2009 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking publication was originally November 11, 2009. FIFA had to postpone the publication release date to November 20, 2009 so the final matches (played on November 14 and 18) could be included in the calculation for November rankings.

The November rankings will be used to determine the seeds for the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. The World Cup draw will take place on 4 December 2009 in Cape Town, South Africa. They have posted their thoughts on the Pots that will be used for the draws that will result with a sample draw thrown in for good measure. I hope the USA has more luck than what is demonstrated in this example!

2009 Springfield Catholic Varsity team

2009 Springfield Catholic Varsity team

Class 1
12:00 – Class 1 Semifinal: SGF Catholic vs JF Kennedy
14:00 – Class 1 Semifinal: Whitfield vs St Pius X (KC)

Kennedy – Rapp, who coached Kennedy to the Class 1A-3A championship in 1986, knew the Celts would be in position to compete for a state title a year ago when his program was moved from Class 2. But the Celts were upset in districts and finished 18-6-2.

Up top, Kennedy is led by senior Tony Luedecke (school-record 26 goals, 11 assists) and sophomore Danny McCune (16 goals, 13 assists). Midfield leaders are senior Blake Ficken (seven goals, nine assists), junior Jorge Ramos (seven goals, eight assists) and junior John Gaal, a transfer from SLUH who has provided some much-needed stability.

Whitfield – After being bumped off in a district final by eventual state champion John Burroughs a year ago, Whitfield returns for its seventh state trip this decade. Since the shift to three classes in 2002, the Warriors have dominated Class 1 by winning titles in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 and finishing second in 2005. Whitfield also finished second in 1999, when there were just two classifications.

This year’s team is led by a core group of seniors that includes goalkeeper Parker Spann (nine shutouts) as well as Kory Clawson (16 goals, nine assists), Martin Tobias (three goals, seven assists) and Matt Chabot (eight goals, two assists).

St Pius X – “We knew they were a strong young team that plays good fundamental soccer,” St. Pius coach Todd Ashby said of Sacred Heart (Quarterfinal opponents). “The thing that helped us for the most part is we controlled the tempo of the game.” Ashby said the Warriors, 22-5, will need to do the same thing against Whitfield, 13-7-2.

Regardless, he expects his team, which was fourth last season (losing to Springfield Catholic) , to have a better showing. “Last year, it kind of hit them that they were on a big stage,” he said. “But now we can say we’ve been here before.”

Bolivar Liberators, 2009 Class 2 Quarterfinal winners

Bolivar Liberators, 2009 Class 2 Quarterfinal winners

Class 2
11:00 – Class 2 Semifinal: Bolivar vs Cape Notre Dame
13:00 – Class 2 Semifinal: St Dominic vs Jeff City Helias

Bolivar Liberators – Coach Steve Fast’s Liberators defeated Pembroke Hill 2-1 in a Class 2 quarterfinal marathon Thursday at Harrisonville. That put Bolivar in the state final four for the third time. The Liberators previously took fourth place in 1998 and 1999.

“I want to thank my players for their work ethic and their desire to never give up. I can’t think of a better way for the winningest senior class in Bolivar soccer history to finish up their careers than in St. Louis.”

Cape Notre Dame BulldogsNotre Dame’s season came close to ending in every postseason game this year with three overtime games to open the playoffs. The Bulldogs then trailed twice against Bishop DuBourg in the state quarterfinals.

“We’ve had so many times where we’ve been down and came back, it’s kind of our thing,” Huber said.

The Bulldogs offer two reasons for remaining calm in close games. Their first explanation is that the team has been in close games all season. The second reason is the senior leadership on the team won’t allow the younger players to freak out when the Bulldogs fall behind.

Jeff City Helias Crusaders – nothing from the JC papers yet. I can tell you one thing, the Crusader’s did something not too many teams did this year and that is they beat the Camdenton Lakers 2-1, in OT on Aug 31st.

St Dominic Crusaders – As he prepares his team to defend its Class 2 soccer title this weekend at Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton, St. Dominic coach Greg Koeller is not overly concerned about Helias, Cape Girardeau Notre Dame or Bolivar. In last year’s championship match, St. Dominic came from behind to beat Helias 2-1.

“I think our guys are excited to face Helias again,” Koeller said. “It was a good game last year and we’d expect the same this time around.”

Class 3
17:00 – Class 3 Semifinal: CBC vs Hickman
19:00 – Class 3 Semifinal: SLUH vs Park Hill

Park Hill TrojansThis year’s Trojans squad was greeted at practice earlier in the week by members of the 1993 team who, according to Sollars, shared stories of their magical run and of how they are still talked about 16 years later.

“Anytime you’re trying to match up with history, it gives us a little something extra (to play for),” Sollars said. “It’s a pretty good motivator when you’re playing for a spot in the history books. We just have a special team with a bunch of guys who want to play for each other, and that’s very rare.”

Hickman KewpiesTaylor puts Kewpies at ease, Coaching change allowed Hickman to relax en route to state semifinals.

“Whenever we’re not doing something right, he doesn’t pull us out for the rest of the game or anything,” Cox said. “He tells us what we have to do, and we try to do it to the best of our ability.”

“I think we had it all along but weren’t able to put it together,” Janicek said. “He ultimately helped us pick up our heads and play together more.”

Coach has a story — another one from his own trip to the state semifinals. You see, he was a freshman on the last Hickman team, in 1999, to advance to St. Louis. A few years later, his playing days were cut short when he injured his knee as a senior. He understands how fleeting one’s glory days can be and thus wants this footloose group of kids to realize that this is more than just “good stuff.”

“I’m always giving them a story, whether it’s motivational or humorous, just to understand how special this is,” Taylor said. “I want them to realize that these are memories that will last the rest of their lives.”

The OpponentSaint Louis is led in scoring by sophomore forward Mike Roach, who has tallied 22 points (10G, 2A). He registered two goals and an assist in the A-10 Championship to draw Most Outstanding Player accolades. Senior defender Tim Ream, who was named to the All-Championship team after notching the game winner against Rhode Island in the A-10 semifinals, follows with 15 points (6G, 3A). Junior midfielder Stephen Bortolon has 10 points (3G, 4A), while freshman midfielder Alex Sweetin leads the team with six assists. Senior keeper Ross Kaufman anchors a defense that has allowed eight goals in the last 12 games.

The Series – The Billikens own a 8-0-3 all-time record against Missouri State. The Bears played SLU earlier this fall in an exhibition match on August 22 with the Billikens taking the 2-0 decision.

In the NCAA Tournament – Missouri State is 0-2-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Bears previous appearances in the NCAA Tournament occurred in 1997 (0-2 loss at #14 Saint Louis) and 1999 (1-2 loss at #16 UAB).

National Rankings – Missouri State is ranked No. 19 in the final regular season NSCAA National Rankings. It was the third consecutive week the Bears had received a top-25 nod. Missouri State was also ranked No. 19 in the Soccer America final regular season rankings and in this week’s College Soccer News rankings (No. 28).

Coach Jon Leamy – Missouri State head coach Jon Leamy (Roanoke College, 1982) is 187-129-33 in his 18th season leading the Bears. Leamy was named MVC Coach of the Year in 1995, 1997 and 1999. He led the Bears to NCAA appearances in 1997 and 1999 and received Midwest Region Coach of the Year both seasons. Leamy, associate head coach Micheal Seabolt and assistant coach David Stockton were named 2009 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year.

Missouri Valley Conference - For first time since 1991, the Creighton Bluejays will not be participating in the NCAA Tournament. Creighton’s streak of 17 straight NCAA Tournament appearances was the fourth longest active streak in the nation. It posted a 7-4-5 record this season, losing just two of its final 11 matches. The biggest win on a slim regular-season schedule — only 15 games — was a 1-0 victory over UCLA. Two other Missouri Valley teams, Missouri State (12-4-2) and Drake (13-6-2), made the NCAA Tournament.

Drake Bulldogs – For the first time in program history the Drake men’s soccer team will host an NCAA Tournament contest as the Bulldogs welcome Summit League champion Western Illinois to the Cownie Soccer Complex on Thursday (Nov. 19) for a 7:00 p.m. tilt. The match will mark the first-ever Division I NCAA Tournament men’s soccer game played in the State of Iowa.

The winner of the match advances to the second round for a meeting with fourth-seeded Ohio State on Sunday (Nov. 22). Game time in Columbus, Ohio, is slated for 12:00 p.m. CT.

SCOUTING THE LEATHERNECKS
Western Illinois (8-9-2) comes into tournament play unbeaten in its last five contests, posting a 4-0-1 mark. Senior Martin Browne Jr. paces the Leathernecks in goals (6), points (12) and shots (18). Senior Stephen Paterson has logged the majority of minutes in net for Western Illinois and has responded by recording 81 saves.

SERIES HISTORY
Drake will be squaring off against the Leathernecks for the 20th time in school history, owning a 12-7 series advantage. Earlier in the season, the Bulldogs netted a 1-0 decision at Western Illinois on Oct. 7.
