Catholic vs Kennedy, Class 1 State Semifinal

Springfield Catholic Fightin’ Irish – 3
JF Kennedy – 0
1st half goals by senior captains David Bailey and Justin Bowenschulte gave Catholic a 2-0 lead after only 15 minutes. They extended the lead to 3-0 late in the second half when Adam Entrup was sent in alone and buried his shot. The Celt’s fought hard and used every tool available to them, even their hands (he was assessed a yellow card) but will head to the consolation match while Catholic reaches the Final in their 3rd year, and 2nd trip, to State.

From the Post-Dispatch: Nine penalty cards were issued in the second half and led to the ejection of Kennedy coach Tom Rapp.

Things went downhill for the Celts after their best scoring chance of the game resulted in a yellow card with about 27 minutes left in the second half. Senior Blake Ficken sent a free kick into Springfield Catholic’s penalty box, but a Kennedy player swatted at the loose ball with his hand (pictured above, got it!). After being initially given a red card, it was reduced to a yellow card but Springfield put the game away on Entrup’s goal 15 minutes later.

Kennedy, which made its first playoff appearance in nearly 20 years, will play in Saturday’s third-place game at 10 a.m. while Springfield Catholic will play Whitfield in the Final at 4:00 pm.

Whitfield – 2
St Pius X (KC) – 1
From the Post-Dispatch: Following a scoreless first half during Friday’s Class 1 soccer semifinal, Whitfield coughed up a goal to St. Pius X (Kansas City) before the second half was two minutes old. But with its resolve tested, Whitfield fought back and scored the next two goals, including senior Peter Jacobi’s game-winner from about 30 yards out.

Crocker’s loss to Catholic in the quarters looks a little less suspect after this result, 3-0 win over the #1 team in the state. Time for Crocker to get some votes in the coaches poll.
