Samantha Aguilar, Missouri State Bears, Named MVC 2009 Player of the Year
November 5, 2009 by Ole · Leave a Comment
Aguilar helped the Bears to a second-place regular-season finish — the highest finish in school history. Missouri State ended the regular season on a five game unbeaten streak. Their 4-0-1 run is the best five-game span since the team won six straight matches in 2006.
Aguilar was also one of three Bears to receive first-team All-MVC accolades. Joining her on the first team was junior defender Jordan Reppell and sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Teahan. Aguilar and Reppell were named to the first team last season as well.
Reppell recorded a career-high three assists while helping lead the Bears defense to nine shutouts and the second-fewest goals allowed in a season in team history. Teahan, who owns the lowest career goals against average (0.757) in Missouri State history, recorded seven shutouts this season. Her shutout streak of 425:58 from Sept. 11 through Sept. 20 was the longest since Jackie Jasper in 2006 (478 minutes).
Three other Bears were honored as members of the All-MVC second team. Senior defender Jessica Smits, who recorded three assists during the season, was also named to the second team a season ago. Senior forward Jenna Dobkins earned her first all-conference nod after scoring three goals this season, all of which were game-winners, and added one assist. Freshman midfielder Rachel Weimer was also named to the second team squad and tallied two goals and an assist.
Freshman defender Nia Williams was named to the All-MVC honorable mention squad. Williams recorded an assist and took two shots this season, both on goal.
Williams and Weimer were joined by midfielders Claire Hulcer and Megan Jaskowiak as members of the MVC all-freshman team. Hulcer scored two goals this season, both game-winners, and added an assist. Jaskowiak tallied two goals and recorded a team-high four assists. The four members of the all-freshman team are the most Bears on the squad in team history.
The All-Missouri Valley Conference Team was honored at a banquet Thursday night in Omaha, Neb. Missouri State will face tournament-host Creighton at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Following two semifinal matches on Friday, Nov. 6 (3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.), the league’s championship match will take place this Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1:07 p.m. The State Farm MVC Tournament championship match will air live on the MVC TV Network, while the semifinals are available on the league’s video streaming package — “MVC Live.” UPDATE – The MVC Final on Sunday will be available live on Mediacom Channel 22 in the Springfield area.
