It took double overtime and more than 107 of hard-hitting soccer to do it, but the Carthage Tigers are district champs for the second year in a row. The Tigers beat Joplin 1-0 with a goal off a corner kick in the final three minutes of the second overtime. The goal came on a corner kick and actually bounced off a Joplin player into Joplin’s net for an “own goal.”

Perhaps the Carthage Tigers soccer team should go out and buy themselves a lottery ticket. Scratch that idea: maybe they should have someone else go out and purchase the lucky ticket for them.
For the second time in three days, the Tigers registered a dramatic overtime victory on Thursday without scoring a goal. In fact, the Joplin Eagles were the ones who scored in the double-overtime affair with a goal in the 107th minute, yet the Tigers were the ones celebrating a 1-0 victory and the Class 3 District 12 championship.

Carthage outworked Joplin for this one. Winning two out of three two years in a row over good Joplin teams is a great accomplishment for this program. Congratulations to Coach Osborne and the team on a hard fought and well deserved victory.
Joplin outworked Carthage but carthage got lucky…again, of course they would need that since they really didn’t score at all in the two district games. Carthage in no way derserved to win this game.
