Drake vs Evansville, Live at 7pm on Fox Soccer Channel

Fox Soccer Channel_logoDrake looks to notch a key Missouri Valley Conference road victory as the Bulldogs battle Evansville tonight. The match is slated for 7:07 p.m. start, with the showdown being televised nationally on Fox Soccer Channel as the NSCAA Men’s College Soccer Game of the Week.

Friday’s match brings together two of the top teams in the Midwest Region and Missouri Valley Conference. Drake (9-4-1, 4-1-0) is first in the MVC, #2 in the NSCAA Midwest Region poll, ranked #24 in the NSCAA national poll, and receiving votes in the Soccer Times poll. Evansville (9-5-1, 3-3-1) is fourth in the MVC, #7 in the Midwest Region, and receiving votes in both polls.

The Aces need a victory Friday to maintain the opportunity of capturing an MVC regular season championship. A victory would also assure the Aces of their fourth consecutive winning season under fourth-year coach Mike Jacobs, a feat most recently accomplished by the 1989 through 1992 teams. UE has allowed only one goal in each of its last five matches, but the Aces are just 2-2-1 during that stretch following Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to second place Missouri State (9-3-2, 4-1-1). Creighton (6-3-3, 4-2-2) moved back into third place Wednesday with a 3-0 win at Bradley. First place Drake has won five of its last six, including a 3-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Wednesday.

The Missouri State Bears have games remaining with both teams. The Drake Bulldogs will play at Plaster on Sunday November 1st, it’s LAUNCH A LEGACY DAY and the Bears are offering suites for rent that day and are collecting food on behalf of the Ozarks Food Harvest. The Evansville Aces visit on November 4th. I’ll be enjoying the game and doing some scouting. How about you?

Shannon Fitzgerald & Northwest Bearcats Get Record 10th Win

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats tied their record for wins in a season with their 1-0 win over Emporia State on Thursday at Emporia, KS. Northwest Missouri State midfielder Heidi Sobota sent a slick ball through the hands of Emporia State goalkeeper Nikki Schmitz and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal in a 2-1 double-overtime win Thursday at ESU Pitch.

Shannon Fitzgerald, a Catholic 2005 graduate who played on 2 State tournament teams for the Irish, reached her 70th game played for the Bearcats in the historic win. Returning from a Redshirt season in 2008 due to injury, Shannon ranks 5th in career assists at the program and is one of 13 players who have more than 700 minutes played this season.

Shannon started 17 games and appeared in all 18 as a junior, holds the role of primary kicker for corners. Her sophomore year she started the final 17 games of the season, appeared in all 19 and was an honorable mention All-MIAA selection. Freshman year she played in 17 of 18 games, ranked sixth on the team in points while recording 11 shots with one game-winning goal.

While at Catholic, the team made a trip to the state Final Four in her sophomore and junior years, losing in the quarterfinals in her senior year, and was a two-time all-state honoree and a three-time all-district and all-region selection.

You’ll have one more chance to see her before her college career ends when the Bearcats visit Southwest Baptist on November 7th, a 12pm start time that day. There is a game at Central Missouri State in Warrensburg for the more adventurous on Thursday November 5th at 7 pm.

By the way, the Bearcat site has a nice retrospective on the season on their site, Bearcats Rule the Pitch in 2009, for anyone wanting more information on the development of the team and the program in the five years Shannon has been at NWMSU.

Belles of the Ball: MO Elite FC 2000 Girls Win Fall Classic Title

MO Elite FC 2000 Girls

MO Elite FC 2000 Girls

The Elite teams made quite the bang in the Fall Classic tournament this weekend!

The 96 girls battled a tough bracket with key players out with the dreaded flu and still walked away with a tie and two close losses.

The 92 girls outscored their opponents in bracket play 12-2 and coasted to the finals on a team high. They met SSC in the finals and kicked off the game with a goal in the first 40 seconds. Heading into the second half with the lead, the ladies fell victim to a lapse in marking and SSC capitalized on the mistakes. The final ended, 4-1 in SSC’s favor. Play by play details to come later this week….

The 2000 girls were the belle of the ball for this tournament. They came out of a tough bracket with the wild card and headed to the semi’s. Battling the returning champions from last year, the girls won the semifinal with some strong play in the second half. The girls faced off against a fellow A bracket team and were down 2-0 at half. With a renewed fight and a trio of goals from Brinnae Cooper, the 2000 girls captured their first tournament championship!

Nick Schlichtman, Truman State Bulldogs

Nick Schlichtman, Truman State

Nick Schlichtman, Truman State

Nick Schlichtman, a senior starter for the Truman State Bulldogs and former member of the Cassville Wildcats and Springfield SC, has started 12 of 13 games this season, and is tied with three teammates for fourth in scoring this season with 3 goals and an assist (7 points), part of a balanced scoring attack that has lifted the Bulldogs to #17th in the NSCAA national rankings.

The Bulldogs lost to Drury 2-4 to open the season, in Drury Head Coach Ryan Swan’s first game as head coach at the school where he was the team MVP in 2000 and an All-Region forward in 1999 and 2000.

The Bulldogs shook off that loss and proceeded to go on a 10 game unbeaten streak, including a 3-2 win at #7 ranked Incarnate Word in mid September, with Nick opening the scoring in the 7th minute of that game to give the Bulldogs their initial lead and getting credit for the game winner. A 0-1 loss last week to GLVC member Lewis Flyers is the only other blemish on the record for the 11-2-1 Bulldogs. That loss knocked the Bulldogs from the Top 10 nationally and into the #3 position in the South Central region behind West Texas A&M and Midwestern State.

The Bulldogs will play at Missouri S&T next Wednesday, outside of their region, along with three games against lower division programs. The goal is to be in the Top 2 in their region to reach the NCAA Tournament, which kicks off Thursday November 12th. Nothing is guaranteed yet, as this article from the Truman Index student newspaper notes, but the Bulldogs are one of only two teams this year to score multiple goals on the Panthers. Good luck Nick!
