Springfield Catholic – 4
Nixa Eagles – 1
On Senior night, the Irish got the game winner midway through the first half when Nick Kofron, playing in the central midfield, ripped a shot from the left just outside that box that caught everyone in the park flat-footed with it’s pace and sudden result. While Nixa moved the ball well this evening, they were unable to match Catholic’s offensive fire power, with freshman Luke Strauss coming close to matching Kofron’s shot when he buried one to the near post as he ran into the box.

The second half saw senior Justin Bowenschulte score as well as an own goal offering Catholic their final count. Nixa’s goal was scored by ?

Missouri State Bears – 1
Indiana State Sycamores – 1
The Missouri State women’s soccer team (7-5-3, 3-1-1) got a late first half goal by senior Samantha Aguilar and got a 1-1 draw with the Sycamores (5-8-3, 2-2-1) in Terre Haute, Ind., tonight. Indiana State got on the board first when Casey Allbright kicked in a rebound. Missouri State goalkeeper Jessica Teahan made the initial save on Allbright, but gave up a rebound that the Sycamores used to go up 1-0 at the 18 minute mark.

Aguilar would answer as she stole the ball just outside the box and drilled the shot just under the crossbar to tie the match in the 44th minute. The goal is Aguilar’s team-leading fourth of the season and 14th of her career. She is now tied for seventh on the Missouri State all-time goals scored list with Alina Alaimo.

The Bears travel to SIU Edwardsville for a 1:00 p.m. tilt with the Cougars on Sunday at Ralph Korte Stadium. Missouri State will return home on Thursday, October 29, for the regular season finale against Illinois State. The Bears and Redbirds will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. at Plaster Field.

Drury Panthers – 2
St Joseph’s Pumas – 1
Nationally seventh-ranked Drury rallied from an early deficit to beat Saint Joseph’s 2-1 Friday night and move closer to its first Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title. Saint Joseph’s (8-7-2, 5-6-2) struck first with a goal from Kevin Amaizo in the 31st minute, and it appeared the Panthers would trail at halftime before senior Steve Wilczewski scored an unassisted goal off a breakaway, his 12th of the season and 30th of his career, with just over two minutes left before the break to tie it at 1-1. Drury then took the lead for good when junior Micah Whorton came up with his 12th goal of the season just 3:49 into the second half, and the Panther defense took it from there.

The Panthers improved to 15-1 overall and 12-1 in GLVC play entering Sunday’s regular season league finale at Wisconsin-Parkside. Drury maintains a one-game lead over second-place Northern Kentucky, with the Panthers needing a win or tie to secure the top seed, and home-field advantage throughout the GLVC Tournament which begins Nov. 1.

Missouri S&T Miners – 1
Indianapolis Greyhounds – 0
Peter Vaccaro scored on a point blank shot at the 65:38 mark to break a scoreless tie and give S&T its seventh win in GLVC play. The goal came off an assist from Nicolas Solano, who sent a ball into the box to Vaccaro and he put it past Greyhound goalkeeper Justin Roberts.

Friday’s win keeps the Miners in sixth place in the league standings with one game remaining, but they are still in contention for a first round home game in the GLVC Tournament pending the results of Sunday’s play. Wisconsin-Parkside, the team currently in fourth place, hosts league leader Drury and Bellarmine, who is in fifth, hosts Southern Indiana.

Drury Panthers – 3
Saint Joseph’s Pumas – 1
Drury built a two-goal lead with a pair of scores late in the first half and went on to claim a 3-1 victory over Saint Joseph’s. The victory kept the Panthers (13-4 overall, 10-3 in the GLVC) in the thick of things for a top four seed and a first-round home match in the GLVC Tournament which begins Nov. 1. St. Joseph’s fell to 2-14 and 1-12.

Indianapolis Greyhounds – 3
Missouri S&T Miners – 1
Indianapolis scored the game’s first goal in the 63rd minute when Ashley Seehase ran down a long ball at the end line then sent a one-touch cross to Natalie Dietl who finished it for the goal. S&T tied the game in the 78th minute off a free kick from just outside the box that Lockowitz put into the left side of the goal. Leah Williams was credited with an assist on the play. The game wouldn’t be tied for long though as the Greyhounds scored almost a minute later on a short through ball that Seehase finished from the top of the penalty box. The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were eliminated from the final playoff spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament with the loss.

MIAA Soccer: Truman State Shuts Out Lions

TrumanStBulldogs_logoTruman State Bulldogs – 2
Missouri Southern Lions – 0
Riley Mahn scored the match’s first goal in the 54th minute of the second half to lead the Truman Bulldogs to a 2-0 win over the Missouri Southern Lions Friday afternoon (Oct. 23) at Fred G. Hughes Stadium. Mahn’s score came on an assist from Katie Reuck off a keeper deflection at the 54:42 mark of the second half.

Jaclyn Schumann helped seal the Bulldogs 10th straight victory by scoring on a pass from Beth Bystrom off a corner kick to the middle of the box in the 75th minute of action.

With the win, Truman picked up a season sweep of Missouri Southern, who fell to 4-12 overall (2-10 MIAA). The Bulldogs, ranked fifth in the region according to the latest NCAA South Central poll, also maintained a two-point advantage on Nebraska-Omaha with four matches to play in the race for the conference championship. Both teams will spend the majority of the rest of the regular season on the bus, as each squad wraps up the season with three road matches of their final four.

Games on Saturday October 24th include Nebraska-Omaha visiting Northwest Mo. St. at 11:30 am, Washburn at Southwest Baptist beginning at 12:00 pm and Emporia State at Warrensburg, playing Central Missouri at 1:00 pm.

Meramec Community College To Lose Men’s Soccer in 2010

St. Louis junior colleges to cut 7 of 22 sports programs in 2010-11
By Kathleen Nelson of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Meramec Magic_Logo

Seven of the 22 intercollegiate athletic programs offered this year in the St. Louis Community College district will be cut beginning next fall.

The programs to be eliminated: wrestling, women’s volleyball and men’s soccer at the Meramec campus; baseball at Forest Park; baseball and men’s and women’s track and field at Florissant Valley.

Susan Edmiston, coordinator of college communications, said the cuts were part of a $1 million reduction in the district’s operating budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1, 2010. Edmiston said that cutting the programs will save about $200,000.

The decisions on which programs to cut had little to do with their success. Compliance with Title IX was a consideration, Edmiston said, “but they also looked at how many athletes were involved in each sport and travel costs.”

Athletes competing in programs to be cut will be eligible to try out for the same program at another campus. Baseball will still be offered at Meramec, men’s soccer will continue at Forest Park and Florissant Valley, and women’s volleyball will still be played at Flo Valley.

Meramec was ranked in the Top 25 nationally in the most recent NJCAA polls. The Magic also won National titles in 1972 and 1976, part of a legacy of 12 titles won by St Louis Community College programs.

Steve Wilczewski, Drury Panthers

Steve Wilczewski The nationally seventh-ranked Drury men’s soccer Panthers will try to secure home-field advantage throughout the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament when they close out the league’s regular season this weekend with matches at Saint Joseph’s (Friday) and Wisconsin-Parkside (Sunday).

Drury, 14-1 overall, has an 11-1 league record and owns a one-game lead over Northern Kentucky in the standings entering the final two matches; the Norse would hold any tie-breaker by virtue of their head-to-head, 2-1 victory over the Panthers last weekend in Springfield. NKU plays host this weekend to Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis.

Drury’s first stop is Rensselaer, Ind., for a 7:30 p.m. matchwith Saint Joseph’s, which has records of 8-6-2 and 5-5-2, and counts wins over Northern Kentucky and Rockhurst among its five triumphs.

The Panthers will then trek to Kenosha, Wis., for a 2:30 p.m. match Sunday with the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside, who will take a 12-3-2 overall and 7-3-2 league record into Friday’s home match with Rockhurst.

Coach Ryan Swan’s Panthers, with a pair of victories, would secure a first-round home match in the GLVC Tournament on Sunday, November 1, and were they to obtain the No. 1 seed from the final regular season standings, would be in line to host the semifinals and finals the following Friday and Sunday should they get past the first-round match.

Drury is also the No. 1 ranked team in the Midwest Region rankings, which determine the NCAA-II Tournament participants, just ahead of No. 2 Northern Kentucky, which lost at Carson-Newmann in a region game on Wednesday, a day after the latest standings were released.

I chatted with Steve Wilczewski, senior from Glendale, about his senior teammates. If the Panther’s fail to secure the home field advantage for the 1st round of the playoffs, your last chance to see Steve and his teammates play at home is this Friday October 30th against Northeastern State.
