Congratulations to the Crowder College Roughriders who won their 1st round Playoff game today against East Central by a 2-1 score. The PK shown tied the game with the game winner coming in the 89th minute on an own goal by East Central. You can see that one here!

The Roughriders travel to KC on Friday for their 2nd round game against either St Charles CC or Maplewood. Video courtesy of soccer mom Brenda Tyler who’s son is Bryce Collier.

The Roughriders include the following regional players: Collin Crawford (Neosho 2008), Samuel Speck (Neosho 2009), Preston Bates (Kickapoo 2008), James Lane (Neosho 2009), Justin Rogers (Glendale 2008), David Valenciano (Monett 2007), James Carter (Neosho 2009), Bryce Collier and Ben Ballhorn (both Hillcrest 2009)

UPDATE – I added the two Hillcrest boys, apparently I used a 2008 roster from the Crowder website and did this too late at night to catch my mistake.

The Bears have won five straight matches, including a road win at then-No. 19 Drake on October 17 and sit atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings.

Missouri State was last ranked in 2005 when it was in the top-25 for eight straight weeks, vaulting as high as No. 9. The Bears’ highest national ranking came in the final NSCAA poll in 1999 when Missouri State was ranked fourth after a 17-0-3 regular season.

This season, the Bears are led by goalkeeper Alex Riggs, who has accumulated seven shutouts and has a 0.65 goals against average. Riggs has been named MVC Defensive Player of the Week twice this season (Sept. 21 and Oct. 12).

Johannes Demarzi and Paul Paradise lead the Bears on offense. Demarzi has tallied nine assists, tied for most in the conference, and has been named MVC Offensive Player of the Week twice (Sept. 21 and Oct. 19). Paradise leads the team with five goals and was named MVC Offensive Player of the Week and to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week this week after scoring two goals against Bradley on Saturday.

Missouri State Lady Bears Pursuing Best MVC Finish Ever

Missouri State Bears, Samantha Aguilar, Jessica Smits, Jenna Dobkins

Missouri State Bears, Samantha Aguilar, Jessica Smits, Jenna Dobkins

The Lady Bear’s wrap up the regular season on Thursday when they host the Illinois State Redbirds at Plaster Stadium. Game time is 1:00 pm and it will be the last time the seniors pictured (Samantha Aguilar, Jessica Smits and Jenna Dobkins) will play in front of the home crowd. The 2009 Missouri Valley Conference women’s soccer regular season also comes to a close Thursday with three matches that will determine five of the six seeds for the State Farm MVC Championship. The Bear’s opponent, Illinois State, is the lone certainty as the Redbirds have claimed the No. 1 seed and regular-season crown. A win or a tie against the leaders ensures the Bear’s of 2nd in the regular season which would be their highest finish ever and offer a bye in the first round of the playoffs which will be held in Des Moines this year, November 6-8.

Samantha, the team’s center midfielder, is in my opinion one of the finest field players to have worn the maroon and white of the Bear’s and is the engine of their success the past two years, with the team winning 10 games now 3 of her 4 years. She’s coming off a pair of games where she scored a game-tying and a game-winning goal against Indiana State and SIUE. Her goal against SIUE was the fifth game-winning goal of her career. Her career has been a joy to watch and if you haven’t had a chance to see her play, take the afternoon off on Thursday and come help the Bear’s reach a new peak.

I think enough of her that I sat down with her yesterday to talk about her career and future plans. I’ve broken the interview up into three pieces. Here is the first interview, I’ll post the next two on Wednesday and Thursday in advance of the game. Enjoy!

Here’s the 2nd video (sorry, need to place it here to show up on the front page)

Watch this video first!

From the Missouri State bio on her career:
2008: Aguilar was a third-year letter winner after being named All-MVC first team. For her academic success, she was named to the academic all-conference honorable mention team. Aguilar led the Bears in goals scored (7), game winning goals (3) and points (17), while starting 14 of the 19 matches she played. She had at least one point in eight of the 19 games and converted the clinching penalty kick in the MVC Tournament quarterfinal win over Creighton. Aguilar scored a career high two goals at UNI (10/10). Her goals at SEMO (8/29) and vs. Indiana State were game winners. She scored the Bears’ lone goal in a 4-1 defeat to No. 18 Kansas (9/12). Her other goals came in victories over UALR (8/24) and Nicholls State (9/19). Aguilar accumulated three assists on the season. She added 43 shots, 18 of which were on goal, second-best only to Caroline Sweeney.

2007: Aguilar was named to the All-MVC honorable mention squad, recording 38 shots and three points. Her lone goal came in the victory over Murray State (9/12). Aguilar posted her assist in the season opening win over Western Michigan (8/31).

2006: Aguilar played in all 21 matches as a freshman, earning 11 starting assignments. She tallied seven points on two goals and three assists. Her goal against Southeast Missouri State (9/3) was the game winner as the Bears won 1-0 against the NCAA Tournament qualifiers. Aguilar also added a goal against UNI (10/1). She had game-winning assists on Caroline Sweeney’s goal in overtime of the Bears’ season-opening 3-2 victory over Arkansas (8/25) and on Kate Blair’s goal in MSU’s first-round MVC Tournament win over Illinois State (10/29). Aguilar became only the second player in school history to earn MVC Freshman of the Year accolades and she was also voted to the MVC All-Freshman team.

Background: Aguilar came to Missouri State from Olathe North High School in Olathe, Kan., where she helped lead her team to a first-place conference finish and a school-best season record of 16-2 during her junior year. Aguilar’s defensive prowess on the Eagle backline helped her team to school records for season shutouts with 14 and fewest goals allowed in a season with nine. Aguilar was named first team all-state, All-Sunflower League, All-Sun County and all-city as a junior and a senior. She was voted co-defensive player of the year for the Sunflower League two consecutive years and co-defensive player of the year for Olathe North in her final year. Aguilar was also a member of her high school’s tennis and volleyball teams.

Personal: Aguilar is the daughter of Patrick and Glenda Aguilar and was born April 1, 1988. She is majoring in speech/language pathology. Her sister, Courtney, played volleyball at Emporia State University and her brother is a soccer player for Baker University.

Springfield Soccer Club Finds Success at Incredible Pizza Fall Classic Hosted by Lake Country Soccer

Springfield SC, U14 Champions at Fall Classic

Springfield SC, U14 Champions at Fall Classic

The Springfield Soccer Club once again made its’ presence known at a local tournament with several convincing tournament championships this past weekend. The tournament started out on a brisk Saturday morning with the familiar red and black uniforms active on many fields.

Overall, the club supported Lake Country Soccer by having seventeen teams in the tournament, more than any other local organization. “We feel it is important to support the local tournaments. With so many of our teams having to travel outside of Springfield to get quality league games, the tournaments put on by Lake Country Soccer give us an opportunity to compete at home in front of family and friends for the first time all year” said Jeremy Alumbaugh Director of Soccer Operations.

The fall club soccer season is almost at the midway point and the teams were starting to click with their performances. On the boys side the SSC 00/01 Red brought home the Championship in the Under 9 Division in their first tournament as a team. The SSC 98/99 Academy Black team captured their second tournament Championship by winning the Under 11 8 v 8 Gold Division. Playing in the Under 12 11 v 11 Division the SSC 97/98 Boys brought home 2nd Place as they used the weekend to tune up their game before heading to Tulsa this weekend. The SSC 96/97 II Boys and the SSC 95/96 I Boys both made runs into the Semi-Finals before exiting the competition.

Not to be outdone by the boys teams the girls side of the club brought home three Championships. In an exciting 1-0 OT win over Carrera the SSC 98/99 Red Girls won the Under 11 Girls Bracket. The SSC 95/96 I Girls defeated St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Holland to win the Under 14 Division.

The highlight of the weekend was the SSC 91/92 Girls who playing in their neon jerseys were hard to miss. Not having played a match since some friendly games in August the girls quickly got back into rhythm as they prepare for a demanding stretch of college showcase events in November, December and January. They finished bracket play with three wins and no losses.
Those results setup a showdown with local team Missouri Elite FC. Missouri Elite FC took a quick 1-0 lead in the final in front of a large crowd at Lake Country Soccer Cooper Stadium. The 18 Girls quickly responded in the 2nd half by scoring four unanswered goals in the first twelve minutes of the 2nd half. They went on to defeat Missouri Elite FC 4-1 and capture the Under 18 Gold Division Girls Championship. “I’m real proud of the girls. We battled hard all weekend and simply got a little better each game. It’s pretty special for them to win this tournament in their last appearance and to do it in a convincing matter against a local rival made it even better.”

“If we can stay healthy and focused we should have an enjoyable last few months as a team, because we have a lot of talent that enjoys playing together.” said Alumbaugh.

Thanks, to all players, parents, teams and coaches for a fantastic weekend of soccer right here in
our own backyard. Without the support of Lake Country Soccer and the Incredible Pizza Company events like this would be impossible in our community.

Monday Report – Kickapoo Chiefs Make It Interesting, Catholic Grabs COC Small School Title

Kickapoo Chiefs vs Glendale Falcons at JFK

Kickapoo Chiefs vs Glendale Falcons at JFK

~Kickapoo Chiefs – 2
Glendale Falcons – 1
The Falcon’s opened the game with a goal in the 11th second this evening, as Alec Martinez nodded in header at the far post from Cameron Dugan’s fine cross. Both teams came out hard on the following restart and pushed hard to create opportunities. It was the Falcon’s who slowly imposed themselves on the game about midway through the half, winning balls in the middle and pushing forward with regularity.

The Chief’s were able to withstand the pressure but were having difficulty creating opportunities until midway through the 2nd half. The Falcon’s had two excellent opportunities, the first another Martinez shot hammered into the box that came out just as hard and fast and GK Tyler Moses withstood the attempt. Soon after senior Patrick Baltz was sent in alone as he ran onto a through ball and kept the defender at bay but his shot was wide left. That’s when the Chief’s made their statement, as Ian Kennedy sent a ball to the left side that Skyler Russell ran onto, shook his defender with a couple of quick touches and sent a hard square ball across the face of the box. Freshman Aaron Strunk made a fine run and one-timed the ball just inside the upright to even the score.

The game winner was scored by Ian Kennedy. Nate Lavoy was able to win a 50/50 ball following a Glendale clearance attempt and slipped the ball to Skyler Russell near the penalty spot. Russell held off the defenders before slipping a simple square ball into the path of Ian Kennedy who was able to push the ball to the far post before going down (video) under the defensive onslaught.

The Falcon’s pushed hard to equalize with their best chance coming in the final minute (video) but the Chief’s defense held, with Nate Lavoy making the final defensive stand rising high near the PK spot to head out a final ball sent into the box on a set piece.

The Chief’s will face the Rolla Bulldogs on Wednesday, a potential Sectional challenger, before heading into the District 11 playoffs where they are seeded #2 behind Glendale. Should be fun down in Ozark!

DSC_1856Greenwood Blue Jays – 2
Willard Tigers – 0
An entertaining game at Cooper #3 tonight as the Jay’s celebrated Senior Night and took on the Tigers. A scoreless game until the 63rd when Stuart Beezley scored with an assist to the weather. The Jay’s had a set piece that was cleared but Beezley tracked it down on the far left side of the box and when given the opportunity to turn sent a low hard shot to the far post that the keeper got down in front of. A bad bounce, a hard shot and it spun up and across the endline. That opened up the game as the Tiger’s worked very hard to get the equalizer, moving the ball down the middle and the wings. The Jay’s made them pay on the counter-attack in the 67th as Chris Aiken got down the right side before putting a square ball into the box, with Devon Whitlock handling the opportunity well to settle and quickly shoot to the open side of the net.

Catholic Fightin’ Irish – 4
Bolivar Liberators – 0
winner earns COC Small School title

College Heights Crusaders – 1 (PKs)
Cassville Wildcats – 0
The game went to a shoot-out, 3 saves by goalkeeper Evan Belk helped his team to a 3-1 advantage and the win. Belk also kept the Crusader’s in the game with a PK save in regulation.

Ozark Tigers – 10
Hillcrest Hornets – 0

Monett Cubs – 5
Thomas Jefferson – 0
Scoring in the first half for the Cubs were Abraham Mejia off of a corner kick (assisted by Mauricio Trujillo), Pedro Almaraz (assisted by Will Snider), and Maurcio Trujillo (assisted by Pedro Almaraz). The team has been searching for a consistent lineup and the late season adjustments are starting to pay off for the Cubs. Alex Oserowsky scored the lone goal for Thomas Jefferson in the 30th minute of the first half. Scoring in the second half for the Cubs were Abraham Mejia (assisted by Pedro Almaraz) and Al Dohmen (assisted by Mauricio Trujillo).

Jeff City Jays vs Waynesville Tigers – cancelled, will not be made up
Camdenton vs Crocker – Cancelled due to field conditions.
Lebanon vs Marshfield – Cancelled due to field conditions.
Stover vs Osage – Cancelled due to field conditions.
