Ten Panthers Named To All-GLVC Men’s Soccer Teams;
Head Coach Ryan Swan Takes Home League’s Coach Of The Year Honor

The best regular season in school history culminated in a big reward for Drury men’s soccer on Thursday, as 10 Panthers earned All-Great Lakes Valley Conference recognition as the league announced its award-winners.

Highlighting the honorees was the naming of first-year Drury head coach Ryan Swan as the league’s Coach of the Year award recipient, and the selection to the All-GLVC First Team of five Panthers – keeper Stephen Conner (Glendale 2007), forward Steve Wilczewski (Glendale 2007), midfielders Ben Nabers and Peter Higgins and defender Ben Taylor. Conner was also named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Also honored among the Panthers were Second Team All-GLVC selections Micah Whorton at forward and Blake Wilson at defender, and Third Team picks in Andrew Bordelon at midfielder and Connor McClellan (Jeff City 2007) and Grant Bowden at backs.

Wilczewski, Nabers and Bordelon are seniors, the rest members of the junior class for the Panthers, who are 16-1 overall – most wins in school history – ranked fourth nationally and will take the top seed into Sunday’s first-round match with No. 8 Missouri-St. Louis at Harrison Stadium. Drury will close out the regular season on Friday with a 5 p.m. non-conference match against Northeastern State at Harrison.

Northern Kentucky’s Steven Beattie was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Year in the awards, as selected by the conference’s 15 head coaches.

Joining Beattie and DU’s Conner on the All-GLVC First Team are Bellarmine’s Ross Hopkins, Drury’s Wilczewski, Nabers, Higgins and Taylor, Lewis’ Nestor Hernandez and Zac Bond and Northern Kentucky’s Seth Eckerlin and Chris Dobrowolski.

Beattie, a junior forward for the Norse, has captured the league’s top offensive award for the second straight season. The 2008 Ron Lenz National Player of the Year returned in 2009 to post 15 goals and five assists in 14 league matches. Beattie led the conference in shots (83), points (35), goals and game-winning goals (5). He also tied for fourth in the league in assists and helped NKU finish second in the GLVC standings at 11-3-0.

Overall during the year, Beattie has led the Norse to a 14-4-1 record. In the 19 matches he has 18 goals and six assists for 42 points. He also set the NKU all-time goal scoring mark in 2009. Beattie has 50 goals and 14 assists in his three seasons with the Norse.

Conner, a sophomore goalkeeper for the Panthers, helped key a 13-1-0 conference record for Drury in 2009. In 13 league matches, Conner allowed just six goals and finished the conference season with a 0.46 goals against average. He made 39 saves and posted a 0.867 save percentage. In addition, Conner registered eight shutouts against league opponents and led the league in goals against average, shutouts and save percentage.

Overall in 2009, Conner has allowed eight goals and boasts a 0.50 goals against average. He has ten shutouts, 50 saves and a 0.862 save percentage. He is currently ranked sixth in NCAA Division II in goals against average and 11th in save percentage.

Lewis University’s Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) has been named the 2009 GLVC Freshman of the Year. Kieruzal helped pace the 17th-ranked Flyers to a 10-3-0 record in league matches. He allowed just nine goals and finished with a 0.70 goals against average, good for second in the league behind Conner. He also posted six shutouts and a 0.842 save percentage by notching 48 saves.

In addition to the first-team selections, the GLVC has also announced an 11-member All-GLVC Second Team and an 11-member All-GLVC Third Team.

Missouri State Bears – 1
Illinois State Redbirds – 0
The Missouri State women’s soccer team (9-5-3, 4-1-1) beat the Illinois State Redbirds (10-5-1, 5-1-0) this afternoon in the wind and rain at Plaster Field, 1-0. The beginning of the match was delayed by lightning, but the Bears battled on amid the Redbirds’ pressure.

With the win, Missouri State clinched the second seed and a bye in the first round of the MVC Tournament next week. It is the highest conference seed ever for the Bears and most conference wins since 2003.

Illinois State used the wind to control play in the first half. The Redbirds earned six corners and took the only four shots of the period, but Missouri State’s defense held the line and the teams went to halftime deadlocked.

Missouri State got the wind at its back in the second half and took advantage. Freshman Claire Hulcer, in a heads up partnership with junior center back Jordan Reppell, received a ball to her feet on a quick restart before beating her 1st defender and putting a shot on goal that snuck past the keeper to put the Bears up 1-0.

Missouri State goalkeeper Jessica Teahan made four saves in recording her seventh shutout of the season. The Bears recorded nine shutouts on the season, matching last season’s total. Her goals against average of 0.79 is the second-best season total in team history. Offensively, Samantha Aguilar led the team in points (11) and goals (5) for the second consecutive season. Freshman Megan Jaskowiak led the Bears with four assists.

The Bears opponent and kickoff time in the semifinal round of the MVC Tournament next Friday at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb., are yet to be determined. Both semifinal matches will be streamed through the website www.mvc-sports.com with the winners facing off in the MVC Championship match on Sunday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m.

Goalkeeper Randi Russell notched a career-high 12 saves to keep the Missouri Southern Lions close, but Megan Jensen scored in the 24th minute for UNO and the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks held on for a 1-0 win Thursday afternoon (Oct. 29) in Omaha, Neb. Jensen’s score came at the 24:09 mark of the first half off a free kick from the deep right side of the field.

Russell’s 12 save output gave the Lions (4-13, 2-11 MIAA) a chance to win a match in which they were out-shot 22-2 overall and 13-0 on-goal. Michelle Dimza recorded both of the Lions’ shot-attempts. Jerica Kuncl had a match-high seven shots for the Mavericks (13-4-1, 12-1-1 MIAA).

The Lions will next play at Northwest Missouri State on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 31) at 2 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.

Freshman Olivia Hayes scored her 12th goal of the season in the 33rd minute of Thursday night’s match at Washburn University to help the Truman women’s soccer team win its 11th straight match in a 1-0 win against the Lady Blues.

The lone tally during the stretch was scored by Central Missouri, the Bulldogs’ next opponent on Saturday night at 7:00 pm in Warrensburg. Truman recovered from an early UCM goal to score two of its own in the second half and beat the Jennies, 2-1, in Kirksville on Oct. 12.

Wednesday’s Report – Chiefs Get Another Come From Behind Win

Rolla Bulldogs, Miles Wilson (2012) clears in front of Skyler Russell

Rolla Bulldogs, Miles Wilson (2012) clears in front of Skyler Russell

Kickapoo Chiefs – 3
Rolla Bulldogs – 2
For the second time this week, the Chiefs fought back from an early deficit to earn the win over a tough Conference opponent. After giving up a goal to the Falcon’s on Tuesday 11 seconds into the game, the Chief’s saw the Rolla Bulldogs take the lead in the 8th minute on a goal by Kyle Keebey. And for the second time, it was the Chief’s senior leaders who shouldered the responsibility in driving the comeback on Senior Night.

The Bulldogs kept the Chief’s on their heels for much of the first 20 minutes this evening but this team, with a pair of freshman, a pair of sophomores and three juniors working closely the 4 seniors, have discovered a well of self-confidence and resilience since their coming out party at the Kickapoo Shootout. Senior Ian Kennedy provided the first spark, after the Chiefs confidently moved the ball the length of the field. Picking up a poor clearance, Kennedy made a run across half the width of the field from left to right, before sending his shot back towards the left upright to tie the game in the 21st minute. The match remained 1-1 at half time.

The Chief’s are not invincible and when in the 54th minute the Bulldog’s drew a foul 35 yards out, junior Jason Howard’s direct kick somehow bounced in the box and through the defense and into the net. Placed into play and with a result any coach, or fan, can appreciate. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Chief’s attack is active and relentless, much like their spark plug up top, Skyler Russell. A lightning rod for opponents, refs and on this evening, at least one Rolla adult fan who apparently felt his admission fee included taunting 17 year olds, the senior shrugged them all off and drew a foul shortly after the restart. The resulting direct kick was well defended but Russell’s quick restart on the corner kick found Dane Ruggeri unmarked. His header deflected off a defender and past the keeper in the 55th minute.

Dane Ruggeri gets the game winner in the 55th, again from a corner kick, 3-2 Kickapoo

Both teams came close again before time expired but once again the Chief’s defense held, this time as senior Sean Marren rose in the middle of the pack to clear one last effort by the Bulldogs, much as Nate Lavoy had done against the Falcon’s on Tuesday.

Jake Nedoma scores with a simple redirect from a corner kick to the near post, 2-1 Kickapoo

The Chief’s claim 3rd in the Ozark Conference and move to the District 11 playoffs with the momentum and a first round bye along with the Falcon’s. Expect more fireworks in Ozark next week when the playoffs begin.

Camdenton Lakers – 4
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 0
Goals by Jeff Dorhauer, Jeron Sinclair (2) and Blake Barbour move the Laker’s to 8-0 in the Ozark Conference as they pursue an undefeated Conference season. Thursday’s game against Hillcrest is all that remains.

West Plains Zizzers – 0
Ozark Tigers – 3
Goals by Landon Hunter, Seth Hampton, and Andrew Vanhoesen

Nixa Eagles – 3

MLS Playoffs Begin Thursday

MLS Cup 2009The MLS playoffs will begin Thursday when the Seattle Sounders FC host the Houston Dynamo (TV: ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, live, 9 pm). According to Soccer America (I haven’t bothered counting) of the 11 games, 10 will be available on national television — five on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, three on Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Sports en Espanol, one on TeleFutura and MLS Cup 2009 on ESPN and Galavision.

Want all the details? Hit the MLS 2009 Cup homepage or your favorite teams website. As to the schedule, as always I’ve added it to my Soccer Calendar for your convenience. It’s OK to root for two teams, especially if one of them is playing the Galaxy!

Oh, and lest I forget, if you’re really serious about your MLS soccer, the league has made a 188 page media guide available to all, you can download it here.

MLS CUP PLAYOFFS FORMAT
Playoff Format: Conference Semifinal series are conducted in a home-and-home, aggregate-goal format. The lower seeded team in the Conference Semifinal hosts the first game. The winners of those four series advance to single-game Conference Championships that will determine the MLS Cup Finalists.

The team that scores the most goals in the home-and-home series advances to the single elimination Conference Championship. If the teams are tied after 180 minutes in the Conference Semifinal series, a 30-minute extra time period (divided into two 15-minute periods) will be played followed by kicks from the penalty mark, if necessary. The team with the higher seed between the two Conference finalists will host the Conference Championship game.

In the case of ties after 90 minutes of regulation in the Eastern and Western Conference Championship games and MLS Cup, 30 minutes of extra time (divided into two 15-minute periods) would be played followed by kicks from the penalty mark, if necessary, to determine the winners.

Total Demize U17 Prodigy Take Missouri Mule Title

Total Demize U17 Prodigy by Joe George III

Total Demize U17 Prodigy by Joe George III

Total Demize Soccer Club U-17 Prodigy participated in the Missouri Mule tournament in Blue Springs, Missouri over the weekend. Prodigy played against normal adversaries FC Springfield along with tournament juggernauts Kansas Rush-Swoosh.

FC Springfield provided the opening game, and Total Prodigy proved to be worthy opponents. Prodigies defense held strong, keeping FC Springfield to only three shots on goal. Megan and Madi shared the eventual clean sheet, with Lauren scoring a hat trick. Marin hit for two, while Rachel and Danielle both scored a goal of piece.

In last years tournament, Kansas Rush eventually knocked Total Prodigy out of competition due to a 1-0 score line. With that result on their minds, Prodigy hit first. Rush continued to press, eventually getting one back. With the game one minute from full time, Prodigy sprung to life. With 40 second left on the board, Lauren found space down the wing to pick out Marin at the back post to slip in the winner.

Due to inclement weather, game three against local Summit Soccer Club Explosion was called a draw. The final was scheduled later in the day, but due to lightning the tournament was called. Total Prodigy was declared the winner due to goal differential, with nine goals scored and one again. Summit SC Explosion were the runners up with three goals for and one against.

Up next for TDSC Prodigy is the GSI Showcase November 21 and 22.
